My Maternal Grandmother Dora, For Whom I Am Named. Late 1890s
1895
I have other photos that might be older, but I don't have dates on them and I can't be bothered looking at my notes to work out a rough age. This is my great, great grandparents with their children, before my great grandmother was born.
Grandfather, Grandmother, Grand Aunt. Wawona Tree, Yosemite, Circa 1920
The two young children are my father's oldest sister and oldest brother. My father was probably not even born yet when this photo was taken.
Mi Padre Y Mi Abuelo
My father was born in 1917, so the photo is from the early 1920s. My grandfather was a bricklayer. Note the piece of black cloth on one arm, for the mourning of a deceased relative. At the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, he, my grandmother and three little girls were fleeing the bombings and when a bomb fell they never saw him again. Meanwhile, my father (18 y. o. at the time), had been mobilised with the Republican army. They were so young that they were called ‘la quinta del biberón’. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
