The reason it matters that everyone remembers it is because of how that memory affects society. Will it come back or with it gone, would humanity realize how much better it is with that thing gone.

Except wasps, mosquitoes, and hornets play an important ecological role. Losing them would have a severe negative impact on the environment as a whole. It wouldn't be right to eliminate them just to teach humans a lesson.
