Life is nothing but uncertainty. This is a drag, but of this I am increasingly sure. That unexpected things will happen is the only fact upon which you can rely. I remind myself of this daily. I am aware of my frailties and aware of my strengths. I try to be honest with myself about who and what I am and what resources are available to me. Above all else I stay keenly attuned to the undeniable reality that I am a microscopic organism in a vast universe, the tiniest fraction of time in eternity. It’s a beautiful comfort, and like all beautiful things, horrifying upon closer inspection. Such is life. You can’t really plan for all eventualities. But you can know what you lack and what you have by way of tools to deal
with problems, and if nothing else, do the best you can to protect those creatures who might rely on you.
