I have usually been the one that moved so not sure i can fully answer your question, but I did meet up with a friend recently who I have known since I started school. I moved after two years of school and I had a tough time, but I don't think I fully realised how tough it was for her as well. She mentioned feeling quite lonely, because our other close friend had started hanging out with the 'cool' kids around the same time. We kept in touch though, always went to each other's birthday parties and caught up a few other times a year. Then we lost contact for a few years but reconnected on facebook and I now live only a couple of streets away from her so catch up again! I think it is probably easier to stay in touch now, as you have online as well as cheaper phone calls. We also sent letters to each other and I think I still have some she sent. I remember her making me a floppy disc with computer games that she sent which was cool. Not sure any of this answers your questions, but oh well :)
