Now this is an amazing breakfast! I remember visiting an old friend in Istanbul and will never forget just how incredible the food was. I loved the stall in Istanbul that sold fresh Simit and other breads.

Now THAT's a breakfast! Visited Istanbul about 20 yrs ago - the food is outstanding! Kofte (meatballs), Dolmas, Lamb Kebabs, and don't let me get started on their insanely delicious pastries! Their cuisine alone warrants a visit to Turkey...

It looks like more than the breakfast of a hotel. For example, the cold cuts. Are the Turkish people usually eat pork?

They look like veal ham, veal salami, pastrami and (smoked?) turkey ham.

I couldn't eat half of that in a whole day! It looks great but I hate to waste food so this would cause me some anxiety. The best I could do is taste/nibble a little bit of everything. I'd go straight for those tomatoes first.

The ones with sesame are called simit, the softer ones without sesame are called açma.

Breads and jam, yes, and meat/cheeses...but kalamata and black olives, and salad fixings for breakfast? Nope. My stomach would not enjoy the olives much. Anyone know what those pink things to the right are? Is that some kind of candy?

Individually packaged sugar cubes for your tea, which you'll have glass of with this breakfast.

Sorry, I did't read before today, and excuse me, my english is not "very good lookin'". I will explain. In first place plantains is not the same as bananas. it is harder to the touch and the flavor is different, mostly similar to that of a courgette. It is typical of the coast of my country. It is the main food of the people in that region because it can be prepared in many ways. It is not sweet unless it is allowed to ripen and even then it is not as appetizing as a banana, it must be cooked before it can be eaten. It is not a fruit but rather a vegetable. It is eaten fried, roasted or cooked in boiling water, with different accompaniments such as meat, chicken, fish or mainly shellfish.

Hello Moomin, I will try my english is very rough. Firstly plantain it's not the same as banana. if you get the plantains, you must peel and boil them in water seasoned with salt until, when pricked with a fork, they feel soft (you will know it is extremely different from their original texture) or the tastier but less healthy version, you fry them in oil the plantains cut into slices (it is also the version of the photo). Once cooked, they are ground in a mortar and salt, lard, butter or margarine (whatever is available) is added. It is ground until there are as few pieces as possible (it looks like a dough..) , cheese is added and it is ground again so that it is integrated into the mass. In my country we usually put pork rinds but that is very local, only the cheese should suffice. Then it is shaped into balls (hence the name) and served as soon as possible because the plantain hardens when it cools. It is accompanied with black coffee and almost always a piece of cheese.

Hello Marion, no, they aren't fried buns, They are made of plantain, a vegetable (let's say it that way) from tropical climate, fried and mashed, with cheese.

So in the front we got tomatoes with feta, arugula, chopped olives and some dates. In the back (partly covered by vinegar and oil) a variety of cheese and fruit. On the left mixed freshly baked baguette and croissants. Also cappuccino and freshly pressed orange juice! ;)

We usually have them for breakfast. Not every day though, they are too greasy. Maybe on Sundays or special ocasions. Bread, tomato and ham or just olive oil is more common.

I've found variations of this online that are from France and from the Caribbean. They are different, but not doubt the origin of our Cajun boudin. (Also, it's not just for breakfast, but that's kind of the tradition.)

No, no, that is Special K, the wheat flakes variety with dehydrated strawberries. You KNOW we can't afford that with food stamps! We have to go to the Sav-A-Lot and buy the weird off brand corn flakes. NOT the sweetened corn flakes, the regular kind. And I hope that is powdered milk in there too, btw, LOL! Sadly though, you are right. About the food stamps, the amount, and what our kids eat for breakfast. Hardly anyone enjoys that nice platter of eggs and bacon up there in that other photo of an American breakfast. (Can't believe they left out the grits and biscuits in that photo, hmph!)

I don't have one, 'cause I only prepare food from feeling and imagination. Here I used a simple buttered puff pastry recepie without sugar, and the filling is just butter, honey aaand a lot of cinnamon. And my favourite part is, that the butter with the honey is more sticky and more fluid, and it turns to a really satisfying caramell.
