Recently, a chat between the Island’s Governor and some of his now-former allies was leaked. Nearly 900 pages of content made its way across the Internet and the media and the People of Puerto Rico took it as the last straw. The leaked communications revealed misogynistic, homophobic, and tasteless remarks made against women in local government and the victims of Hurricane María, amongst other targets. The chats also explicitly revealed corrupt and illegal actions from both Governor Roselló and his affiliates. Since July 12th, 2019, the People of Puerto Rico have been actively protesting for his resignation and for drastic changes in the Island’s political panorama.

Protests began on July 12th, 2019 in the streets of Old San Juan.

Thousands of people from all over the Island joined the manifestations, letting their thoughts on the political administration be heard.

During the first few days the protests quickly intensified.

Protesters were crossing barriers, trying to get closer to the Governor’s mansion (La Fortaleza).

Police forces threatened the people’s safety as they began using tear gas to deter them from continuing the protests.

Police managed to draw people away from the streets of Old San Juan…

…but Puerto Rico didn’t give up.

Some streets ended up vandalized and in a rather bad state.

But, on the next day Puerto Rico quickly began the recovery process. Business owners and protesters cleaned up the buildings and the streets, resolved not to back down from their calls for justice.

The protests kept going, each day with more and more support from the people.

Even Spider Man jumped in!

Many Puerto Rican celebrities like Ricky Martin, Bad Bunny, Calle 13, Lin Manuel Miranda, and Marc Anthony have joined in the manifestations and called for Gov. Roselló’s resignation.

Along with the Puerto Rican people, they have kept fighting for justice and order non stop.

Puerto Ricans in the USA have also made their voices be heard. Manifestations have been taking place in Washington DC, Florida, Colorado, California, New York, and many other states.

On the “brighter” side of things… A couple even got married in a Cathedral in Old San Juan amidst the protests!

And, of course, we have the memes…

But in all seriousness, the people of Puerto Rico have shown how united and strong they are in these tough times. Crowds of people from all ages and political parties keep getting together all throught the Island calling for the Governor’s resignation and for positive, drastic changes.
