Our perspective on the world is shaped every day by everything we consciously and subconsciously see and experience. Some core ideas form in our minds that are rarely challenged later in life. But they should be. The general idea of 'right and wrong' that we see so often growing up doesn't really continue into the real world. Bad things happen to good people, bad people often face no repercussions for their actions: reality is harsh.

One Reddit user wanted to see what other 'hard to swallow' truths people have already learned. Over 31k people had something to say, sharing things that are difficult to accept, but are the actual reality once you step out of the dream world.

Bored Panda picked out the top raw and honest answers that are better to learn later than never. Scroll down and upvote your favorites, and make sure to share your thoughts; maybe you disagree with some of them? And if we're still missing out on some 'harsh realities', please tell us in the comments below!

This is true. I worked in the government and have never seen a larger group of people less interested in others in general. There were always the exceptions but they were often stampeded by the many who cared only for their own bank accounts and careers. It’s so sad, st least here in America.

It depends on who vote for. If you vote for reality TV stars with no political experience and doesn't care about anything but himself, you are going to get a dysfunctional administration.

Despite rants and crazy conspiracies to the contrary,, we still have democracy in America. "The government" isn't some mysterious entity. It's us. We get the government we deserve; because we vote to elect the people in power. If you think it's messed up, look around you and ask yourself what you're doing to make your community s better place.

This is way too vague a statement to be even remotely accurate. My local township has excellent representatives who do their best for the community. My local education board members bust their tail. Many government employees truly do their best to help people. My government-run health department has always been helpful to the community. This god damn negativity is the actual problem. Everyone nowadays is so polarized with an 'us vs them' mentality that is so immature and sad to see. Go live on a f*****g dirt floor without access to clean drinking water, then you can see what it is to truly struggle

What an oversimplification. I always raise an eyebrow when folks talk about “the government” like the entire thing from local, state to feds is made up of some monolithic hive mind…it’s just a bunch of humans in groups usually in a mix from those who really work hard for those they serve and want to do right by them to narcissistic asshomes who are out to enrich and empower themselves at whatever cost- and a ton of regular folks in between. No one person or group should be blindly trusted, but you can’t be so cynical as to never allow anyone to lead either.

Dependa on the type of government and the economic system you live under. Capitalist government? Definitely? Socialist governments? Not necessarily since bt definition they are made up of by prdinary people and are thus owned by the people. When you don't have private property (aka corporations) corrupting the government... it turns out it'a in the best interest of the people working in the government to help those outside the government because it helps them by proxy. Western governments don't have our best interest at heart mainly because politicians sell themselves out to capital. If there is no capital for them to serve... then they are forced to be in the same boat as the rest of us.

If any government had its people's interest at heart then there wouldn't be war. Health care would be free and well funded and education would be free until the end of university. People would be well protected in their employment and you'd be able to live on minimum wage. You wouldn't have to live in absolute poverty if you became disabled and journalists wouldn't be getting jailed for revealing your war crimes..

If you're able to participate in government but choose not to, then this is a self-fulfilling statement. At least in the U.S., the number of people that complain about "the government" but never bother with local or state elections is baffling and sad. No, you don't always get your way, and it can be a struggle to be heard, but abstaining and complaining makes you part of the problem.

Depends on the country and heart of government. But really, if everyone had everyone else in their interest, it wouldn't matter the country or government, bc the government would give their very best to everyone anywhere But sadly, it's so unfortunate, that the United States government only does so much for their country, when really they could go above and beyond

Dehumanizing someone, considering them an animal, a rabid animal, is how humans justify killing them—-and spinning it that “the rabid animal” actually deserved to be put down. It’s totally f****d up, but it’s what we do. Soldiers in a war are sent there to kill as many of the enemy as possible. That enemy is vilified by being portrayed as less than human, as vicious animals, as deserving to be killed—-and people applaud them for killing more of the enemy than the enemy kills them. I know it’s a way to dissociate, to justify going against everything we’re taught about not killing people so we don’t go insane from committing an act that society would otherwise consider aberrant. But maybe by not dehumanizing others, by retaining the context that we’re all humans and shouldn’t be committing acts of violence against each other, maybe we might finally leave our worst tendencies behind us, and finally take the next evolutionary step—-one that the knuckledraggers continually keep pulling us back from—-by becoming a truly elevated species that doesn’t give in to our more animalistic tendencies. (Hey, I can dream, can’t I?)

People Are Sharing "Harsh Realities" That No One Wants To Accept, And Here's 29 Of The Most Insightful Ones People refuse to accept that this IS the reality. Lots of time and money is spent cushioning that blow. We live here. We live now. Best get used to it.

People Are Sharing "Harsh Realities" That No One Wants To Accept, And Here's 29 Of The Most Insightful Ones Pain is inescapable. Not even acknowledging that pain is inevitable and preparing for it ahead of time can lessen it. You will be taken by surprise, you will be hurt, you will not enjoy it, you will not be able to numb it, and there is nothing you can do except take it on the chin.

People Are Sharing "Harsh Realities" That No One Wants To Accept, And Here's 29 Of The Most Insightful Ones Very few people truly accept their mortality, and most of the time when it truly sinks in, people get scared and want to avoid it.

Making your final plans is the best time to mess with people. For example, I'm stating I want my remains scattered, but I don't want to be cremated....

People Are Sharing "Harsh Realities" That No One Wants To Accept, And Here's 29 Of The Most Insightful Ones People can just simply fall out of love with you for no reason. You fretting about whether it's you or something else or the investment is basically you giving them the reasons to strengthen the reason why they stopped loving you. When they could very much not have a reason at all, feelings and priorities can change.

I do not like to be lied to! I CAN (for emphasis) handle the truth. Whatever you do, don’t lie to me. Whoever has lied to me will find out how much I don’t like it.
