But hey, not every secret is dark, dramatic, or scandalous. Some are funny, heartwarming, completely innocent, or simply little things people have kept to themselves for years.
And that’s exactly what today’s collection is all about. We dove into an online thread asking, “What’s a completely harmless secret you’ve been keeping for years?” The answers range from sweet childhood memories to wholesome things people have quietly held onto for much longer than you might expect. I was at a house party and the owner of the house kicked his cat. She ran into the bathroom and I followed her. She instantly started rubbing and purring on me as I cried for her. So I put her in my jacket and walked out of the party and blocked everyone there.

There's a truck that sets up at my son's school every other Friday and gives away free snow cones and shaved ice cups... They're not free - I've been paying the tab for the past three years. But secrets aren't just part of our individual lives—they've also played a fascinating role throughout human history. So, while today's stories may be about harmless personal secrets, let's take a quick look at a few of history's most intriguing hidden stories, too.

Many years ago I saw a neighbour kick his cat off of his porch. That evening I lured the cat into my place and he became my indoor cat. The neighbour never knew where his cat went. I moved a few months later and of course the cat moved with me. He lived a long happy life.

When we were at the shelter adopting my dog, the computer went down and they couldn’t process any payment. I didn’t have cash so they said, “just take her”. I’ve been sending almost monthly donations (dog food, toys, whatever I order from Chewy, etc…) ever since.

I stole my dog. Well, technically my husband did. Ok, hear me out. So, we lived in New Jersey, a tiny town below sea-level during hurricane Sandy. We were evacuated. As we were driving we had to drive through a trailer park, suddenly my husband told me to stop. He jumped out of the car, he came back with a dog. Someone had chained him up outside of their trailer and left him to die. Toby, the Tobes, Tobester is still with us till this day, he’s about 16 now. I don’t regret a thing.
Take London's BT Tower, for example: a structure that was literally hiding in plain sight. Built to support Britain's growing long-distance communications network, the tower could handle up to 150,000 telephone conversations and 40 television channels at opening. The 3,000-tonne structure cost around £2.5 million to build and quickly became one of the most recognizable features of London's skyline.
Yet, because of its importance to national communications, it was treated as an official state secret for years. Taking or even possessing photographs of it could reportedly breach the Official Secrets Act, and the tower was omitted from Ordnance Survey maps until the mid-1990s. As The Guardian has noted, this meant one of London's most visible landmarks technically remained a secret—even though you could simply look up and see it.

We have a cat named Momo who’s a pandemic kitten, so he’s very skittish at first but a really affectionate cat. Momo likes to hang out in the guest room so every time we have anyone spend the night we say “Just so you know Momo will be sleeping in the room with you but he doesn’t really like new people so he’ll probably just be under the bed and you won’t see him all night.” Then in the morning they’re always like “omg Momo hung out with us ALL night” and that’s how we spread joy at our house.

I woke up one Xmas am to a fancy rabbit enclosure and adorable bunny in my bedroom. I thanked my parents profusely. My dad, confused, quizzed my siblings to find out who bought the rabbit and cage. It was me. I bought it and snuck it in saying “don’t look, I have your Xmas gifts in this bag!”

I “stole” these dogs. I was parked in a neighborhood, making a phone call, and I saw a guy kicking his pitbull and screaming at him. So I drove around the neighborhood and he was outside with the chihuahua and their owner was in their house. I opened the fence and grabbed the pit and the chihuahua followed me, so I took them both. Told everyone that found them both on the side of the road because if I told the truth, I’d get lectured about taking dogs from people’s yards.

The Elephant’s Foot at Chernobyl is a highly radioactive mass of nuclear fuel, concrete, sand, and other materials that formed beneath Reactor 4 after the 1986 disaster. Roughly one meter across and weighing several tonnes, it became infamous because of the extremely dangerous radiation levels it emitted.
Adam Higginbotham’s Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster explores the challenge of safely containing radioactive materials such as the Elephant’s Foot. Although its radioactivity has declined significantly over the decades, the formation remains hazardous and is permanently contained within the protected structures surrounding the destroyed reactor. It isn't hidden to preserve a mystery; access is strictly restricted because it remains a dangerous reminder of one of history’s worst nuclear disasters.

Back as a new therapist, I used to work w/ DV survivors & struggling families w/ very little money. One fam broke their only old clunky TV. I had an extra tv I NEVER used. The agency denied $$ assistance & said I couldn’t give mine to them! So I told them about “free stuff” on craigslist. I made an anonymous ad, helped the client “message the seller & arranged 4 the kind person to drop it off to our office for safety”. they got it day after. Never told anyone, but the mom & kids were so happy.

When I was a teenager I use to lie to my parents often and tell them I had to work late (worked at an assisted living facility in the kitchen). But really I just wanted to stay late and play cards with Ernest and listen to his stories. He was a 106 yr old English man who would sneak down after kitchen was closed for a cup of tea he’d sneak whiskey in. The nursing staff never would’ve allowed it. I figured heck he’s 106! He can do what he wants. And he had the best stories. I miss our visits.

yeah, refusing a 100-year old a drink for health reasons... overheard an grand uncle once telling his sister's doctor (so, my grandmother's doctor) in a very calm, gentle way 'Hey, you puppy, I am 101 years old' After which he gulped his double Whiskey in one go.

It’s not even been a year but I stole this cat from my neighbor. I witnessed the neighbor throwing rocks at her and trying to kick her. The poor cat was outside in all weather, in northern MA. She came up to me one day when I was taking the trash out and rubbed up against my legs. She was all skin and bones and it turns out she had a parasite and was at d**ths door. She’s now a sweet healthy kitty and I like to watch as my neighbor occasionally jiggles the bushes looking for her.

When my husband quit his last job (cuz we were moving) I went and dropped off donuts and wrote on the box “happy last day of work!”. Had the receptionist do it so he never knew it was me. He thinks it was his coworkers giving him a send off, and I never want to take that away cuz I wanted him to feel appreciated and loved.

When I was just starting out in the workforce, I was a dietary aide in a nursing home. There was a resident who was 80 pounds soaking wet, mean, and loved her coffee. I was able to get her to 120 pounds by using ensure nutrition shake as her coffee creamer. The more weight she got on her bones, the nicer she became.
The story of the Man in the Iron Mask is another secret that has fascinated people for centuries. I’m the one who called 911 on my then best friend who was in the midst of trying to take her life. I was 3000 miles away because I had just moved out of state and she called me. When I called 911 they told me they couldn’t help because they were local only. I went to my local police station and begged them to help me and they got in contact with her local precinct who sent social workers and EMS. She lived and said she would rain holy hellfire down on who called. I never admitted it.

My sister had a really mean boss when she was super pregnant (made her cry all the time). I sent an edible arrangement bouquet to her work for her “amazing customer service” “best help we ever had” from a made up client name. The office was ABUZZ because no one had ever gotten such a thing. Boss was super jealous.
Not all secrets were deliberately kept, either; sometimes entire cities simply disappeared. Thonis-Heracleion, an ancient Egyptian port city, remained hidden beneath the Mediterranean Sea for more than a thousand years. Natural disasters, including earthquakes and tidal waves, are believed to have contributed to soil liquefaction, causing parts of the clay-rich ground beneath the city to lose stability. Massive buildings and temples eventually collapsed and sank beneath the water, where shifting sand and marine sediment kept the ruins hidden. For centuries, some historians believed stories about the wealthy port were little more than legend—until the submerged city was rediscovered.

When I left my last job, the receptionist was an amazing woman who did so much for the office. I had watched two "Administrative Assistant Appreciation Day" pass without anyone acknowledging her and her contributions. I was already gone from that job for 2 months when the date came up again and I ordered her flowers to be delivered "from the office" she was so grateful she sent a company wide thank you email and 5 years later, nobody has forgotten to do something for her since.

I lied to my local retirement home, saying I was 14 (age required to volunteer) but I was only 12. I really wanted to play games with the old people I ended up volunteering full time for 3 summers. I planned all the games + played with the residents everyday... And ate jello at the cafeteria.

When I started freelancing and was super active on soc med, one of my followers messaged me saying she had cancer and was going through chemo. She was begging for work just so she could pay for her treatment. We got close and when I found out where she was getting her treatment, I paid for the next 6 months. She never knew it was me. Well, I guess it’s not a secret anymore. She’s not here to read this anyway. Rest in peace, my sweet girl. I still think about you.

When my sister got married, she had purchased a beautiful cake topper for her wedding cake. While we were packing up for the venue, I noticed that the head on the bride was missing. She was already so stressed out that I didn’t want to tell her. The whole family was trying to distract her while the others crawled around in the floor looking for a head the size of a pea. We finally found it &I used eyelash glue to reattach it and then cut a tiny piece of lace to make a necklace to hide the seams…

As a child, we were at an family friends home. Dog showed up in their yard, owner called for the dog endlessly. All it did was shiver and shake uncontrollably. Hid the dog in the backyard when the owner stopped by looking for him. No idea where he went. Took that dog home with us. Best damn dog ever and he lived a long happy life.

The kitten I "found on the side of the road" when I was 17... it was only true in the sense that I found A SIGN on the side of the road that said Free Kittens.

When my sister first learned to walk, our mom was a single mom & times were awful. We went to K-Mart and she quietly put a pair of sandals on my sisters little feet, tore the tags off & we went & paid for the rest. Every year since I was able, even as a single broke mom, I’ve donated at least 1 pair of little girl sandals to a local charity. I’ve never told anyone- not my sister, my mom or my kids.

The end of school activity where you write something kind about each classmate on papers labeled with their names? As a teacher, I would change my handwriting to add extra messages for the kids with less written on their papers. When I could, I’d write the things I knew they most wanted to hear and watch them beam when they got them back.

Never thought I’d say this out loud anywhere… but I got an extra g on my taxes when I was about 22, that I wasn’t expecting. I took it to the grocery store, bought 4 grocery store gifts cards for 250 each and just walked around the store til I found 4 people’s carts that looked like mine always had to look… bare minimum. I handed them the card, said “there’s $250 on this card for whatever you can get here… and in case nobody’s told you, you’ve done more than enough today” and left…

I sent the anonymous message to my friend to help her get over her self doubt and register for school. She’s like super into signs I used a Google number to text her “Why would you doubt what is already yours” She told me about it and I took her to register for her program. That was 4 years ago. She’ll be sitting for the bar soon.

It was because I had forgotten the kids name.
I searched that house everyday for 3 months searching for his name written anywhere and it never was found.

The Nintedo Switches that my brother gave my 3 nieces a few Christmases ago actually came from me. He couldn't afford to get them and I had a work bonus so I bought them and let him pretend they were from him. They were ecstatic.

I overheard a co-worker saying she didn’t have much money for Christmas presents for her kids. I didn’t have much money at the time either but I sent her $100 in the mail anonymously. I did that for 5 years. In the 6th year, a different coworker asked me if I was the one sending it and I confessed. She then put in another $100. We sent $200 every year until circumstances changed.

At the cottage, I’m mowing the lawn on ride mower, I’m maybe 10 yrs, my aunt is w/me coaching, I clip one of the newly planted trees, slicing the trunk. My aunt tapes it up, smudges it up w/dirt so it matches the bark & swears me to secrecy. “Don’t tell your uncle”. A couple years later my uncle says he can’t understand why that one tree is stunted & so much smaller than the others. I finally told the story at my aunt’s funeral. I know how to keep a secret!!!

I was dating this person for about 3 months who was horrible towards their mom who lived with them. The mom called me one day crying and asked me to help her move in secret when the person I was talking to left for work. I came and loaded up my car & I drove this lady 3 hours away to a friends place. When the person got off they were livid and called me talking terribly about the mom. I acted surprised and broke it off shortly after.

I eat a lot of goat meat because when I was a kid, a goat at the petting zoo nibbled on my pinky and I didn’t like that. I tell everyone that I eat goat cuz I’m African (it’s true), but it’s 99.8% outta spite cuz of that one goat in 1990.

I was 5 and took the little plastic Jesus from my grandmas nativity on Christmas. I wanted a baby for my Barbie’s to have…I felt so bad about it and I lied when asked about it. I went and buried him in the woods….im probably going to hell for that one.

I did something similar, I cooked up a savory goat dish and my Dad had been claiming he wouldn't eat goat for nothing! How gross and disgusting it was etc. Well he scoffed two plates of my dish, raved and asked for left overs. I told him it was goat, he looked shocked, before asking for the recipe.

I have a friend who was trying to gain traction as a cooking content creator on YouTube but was having a hard time so when she was starting out I made a few fake accounts and posted positive comments under all of her videos encouraging her to keep going, asking questions, etc. She has a big following now and I will never, ever tell her.

I ate the cherry tomato.
My mother gave each of her five children 2 cherry tomatoes on their small 1960’s salad. My sister discovered one of hers was missing. We were lined up and questioned, no one confessed. My mother said we could not leave the table until the mystery was solved. After much discussion it was decided that I, the youngest would take the blame and receive the, probably softer punishment. My siblings were very nice to me for a week or so and
It was never brought up again.

My husband got a jeep 5ish years ago and he was so excited to get “ducked” and after 3 months he was kinda sad about it so I went and bought a duck and put it on the jeep while he was at work he was so excited when he came home to tell me about it.

My mum got her first car in 1985, a week later she scratched the front of it when parking at the shops. She didn't scratch it, I did it when it was in the garage and I taped two screwdrivers together pretending to be a ninja with a throwing star and threw it straight at the car. Nobody tell her, she's still pissed about it. And I'm still scared of her.

When I was a teacher the kids loved playing “among us” at recess and would always ask me at the beginning of recess to choose if they are safe or the imposter. There was never an imposter. They spent all of recess being sus of each other every. single. day.

As a former nanny: 1. I had no idea what happened if I got to three 2. I did not actually remember who went first last time we played the game 3. When I said I had an uncanny ability to make desserts perfectly equal by weight, even if one looked ever so slightly bigger visually, that was a lie.
