Remember your favorite toy as a kid? Well, the work of Russian artist Svetlana Karakuleva may bring back all those cozy memories. Her handmade toys are not only cute but also very detailed, which is probably because she’s been doing this for 10 years.
Previously an interior designer, Svetlana told us: “One day I saw handmade flowers made of cold porcelain and I wanted to make them myself, so needlework appeared in my life. Then I began to teach this craft and opened my own studio of manual creativity. I wanted to develop. And I began to master more complex techniques and materials. Now my toys are a combination of my design experience and knowledge in working with many materials, such as fabric and various plastics, felting. I also make the eyes of my toys myself. And they became the ‘calling card’ of my creations.”
Talking about the creative process of making these toys, the artist explained: “Images of toys are born in my head by themselves, I just need to catch them. Sometimes it's a desire to try this or that technique, sometimes the fabric dictates the hero, sometimes my collectors describe their desired characters in such detail that their hands make them themselves.”
