As a newborn photographer, I am constantly meeting new families. I have found a lot of meaning in my profession by connecting with young parents, especially new mothers. My story isn’t unique. I found myself wanting to be more available to my family after I had my children. That’s when I started to hustle and created a successful small business that gives me the freedom to also be a more available mother.

Much of my blog and Facebook support group focuses on finding resources and providing help for young families. This month, we are talking about balancing parenthood, while also on a path to addiction recovery. Thankfully, addiction has not plagued me personally, but I have seen its effects on those close to me. I hope this article will be helpful to anyone who finds themselves trying to juggle parenthood, while also working on their own sobriety.

For parents navigating the path of addiction recovery, managing a side gig can provide financial support, a sense of purpose, and a positive distraction. However, it’s crucial to strike a balance that doesn’t compromise one’s recovery journey or parental responsibilities. In today’s post, I share some tips on how to effectively manage a side gig while in addiction recovery.

FIND THE RIGHT SIDE HUSTLE

The first step is choosing a flexible side gig that aligns with your skills, interests, and recovery needs. Freelance writing, blogging, online tutoring, graphic design, data entry, pet sitting, or social media management are all options that offer flexibility. You can work on these tasks at your own pace and in the comfort of your home, which can be especially beneficial during the recovery process.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ONLINE RESOURCES

Harnessing the vast array of online resources can prove to be an invaluable strategy. The digital landscape offers an assortment of tools that parents can tap into to bolster their side ventures. Online platforms provide opportunities for remote work, new skill development, and networking, all of which can be customized to accommodate recovery priorities.

From web-based freelancing platforms to virtual workshops and forums, the virtual realm is teeming with avenues to enhance one’s side gig while maintaining the flexibility needed to prioritize the ongoing journey of addiction recovery.

BUILD A ROUTINE

Temper.com notes that routine plays a critical role in addiction recovery. It provides structure, reduces anxiety, and helps prevent relapse. When incorporating a side gig into your routine, ensure it doesn’t interfere with your recovery activities, such as therapy sessions, support group meetings, or self-care practices. Allocate specific hours for your side gig, but remember to also dedicate time for rest, family, and other important aspects of your life.

PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE

Self-care is crucial during recovery. It helps to maintain physical health, reduce stress, and improve mental well-being. While managing a side gig, ensure you’re eating healthily, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and practicing mindfulness. GoodRx Health points out that these self-care practices can boost your energy levels, enhance focus, and ultimately contribute to your side gig’s success.

BUILD A STRONG SUPPORT NETWORK

Build a strong support network as a crucial part of your recovery journey. Whether it’s your family, friends, therapists, or fellow members of addiction recovery groups, this network will be your pillar of strength and guidance during tough times. They offer emotional support, practical advice, and can even help with childcare responsibilities.

This support is especially beneficial when you need to focus on your side gig or activities related to your recovery. Knowing that you have a group of supportive people around you brings a sense of security and stability that is priceless during the recovery process.

HOPE FOR THE BEST, PLAN FOR RELAPSE

Setbacks and relapses can arise on the road to recovery, so proactively prepare for potential obstacles with a solid plan. A crucial aspect of this should involve identifying reputable rehab facilities in advance. By doing so, you’ll have immediate support at your disposal, ready to assist whenever needed.

If financial concerns arise, prioritize centers that offer a range of free services. When considering a treatment center, thorough research is crucial. Evaluate the range of treatments provided, the facility’s credentials, and reviews from previous patients.

Managing a side gig while in addiction recovery and juggling parental responsibilities can be challenging, but definitely achievable. With the right strategies, you can create a balanced routine that supports your recovery journey, nurtures your family, and contributes to your financial stability. Always remember that your recovery comes first and reaching out for help when needed is not a sign of weakness, but of strength.
