Woman Exposes Her Influencer Boyfriend’s Lies, Wonders If She Did The Right Thing
With so many social media influencers popping up everywhere, you may start wondering what it is like being friends with one. We previously covered the topic of not-so-fun stories from people who are friends with influencers, which you can read right here.
Others, though, find themselves in romantic relationships where their significant other is pursuing an influencer career, sometimes at a questionably deliberate cost. This is what happened to one Redditor who recently shared a story about her TikToker boyfriend.
While he recently set out on a mission to reach 100k followers, his concerned girlfriend realized they weren’t spending that much time together anymore. Moreover, she became “upset that he was essentially using our relationship for clout,” and decided to make a response video telling his followers about how exactly the guy neglected their relationship.
Now, the girlfriend is seriously wondering if this was the right thing to do and r/AITA is here to weigh in on it. Have an opinion of your own? Share in the comment section below!

TikTok has become exceptionally popular in recent years, particularly with the younger millennials and Generation Z. It’s now the most popular overall app downloaded globally in 2020 for both Apple and Android downloads. 2020 was the year TikTok surged ahead of all other platforms, with 850 million downloads, reports Business of Apps.
With such unprecedented popularity, many TikTok users have turned into influencers as their engagement rate scored the highest to compare with other platforms like Instagram.
For example, Upfluence found micro-influencers had engagement rates of 17.96% on TikTok, 3.86% on Instagram, and 1.63% on YouTube. At the other extreme, mega-influencers had engagement rates of 4.96% on TikTok, 1.21% on Instagram, and 0.37% on YouTube.
The influence that TikTok influencers have on viewers’ buying choices is also huge. Uswitch also discovered that 61% of people base their purchases on current trends, with TikTok providing the most inspiration. After asking respondents which platform is their go-to for finding shopping trends, 41% said TikTok is their first port of call.
And this is what people had to say about the whole situation
They are both part of the- or sucked into the problem. The guy definitely has a social media addiction and is not living his real life anymore. Is he behaving like an idiot? yeah sure. is that strange? not if you understand how social media platforms harvest attention craving followers and prey on their psychological coping systems. She is obviously ignorant of the problem as well and thinks that he is more in control of this situation than he actually is. The guy needs help. Perhaps they both do. Her reaction was rather hard and shaming him publicly probably did not help him at all. Finding out what he gets out of this empty and meaningless online behavior and finding a healthy and fulfilling substitute for that, will help. There is nothing wrong with social media as long as it stays a bit of fun. This behavior and the amount af value it is given is obsessive and very very very much related to an addiction.
You just posted what I was basically thinking too! He's clearly getting addicted to social media, and I also don't think she understands how an addiction to something works (ur so spot on there too, public shaming and sabotage will have a worse effect, pushing him towards the addiction), but I'm hesitant as to whether she was truly unaware of the impact of her actions, or whether she did it out of spite/as an attempt to get him away from social media by sabotage. Just think that as she seems internet savvy enough to do the 'AITA' question etc. But it's addiction, the social media, and I'm hoping this gets more recognised as an actual issue that needs addressing.
Load More Replies...I had to quit Reddit because it was eating up too much of my time. Nice to get some selected content here.
Load More Replies...Seems like he's letting the narcissistic attention get to him. If that's more important to him in the long run, then I don't think it matters what you say to him. Maybe one day it will wear off, but it's probably better to spend time with someone who appreciate spending time with you.
I am intrigued by this. If the majority of people said she was correct, what would she do? Alternatively, if the majority said she was in the wrong, what would she do. I sense in either case it will not make anything better in that relationship!
I mean it's just nice to know what everyone sees in an outsider perspective and to reflect on it. Why do you have to be so negative just because someone uses the internet lol
Load More Replies...Who the hell follows influencers like that. I have never flollowed an influencer. I`m a millenial. It says something about my generation.
I feel like I lost brain cells reading this. Followers don’t pay your bills. Followers don’t show up to carry your casket at your funeral. This guy seems like a self absorbed prick and the fact this is the crap people waste their time online watching makes me have fear for our future if people like this will one day be running the country
I truly don't get why people would behave like that just to get some followers on tiktok. What does it bring exactly ?
ESH, for the boyfriend trying to get clout. And the girlfriend going ballistic.
Do people make money from tiktok videos the way youtubers do? If it's not a money making venture then I can't wrap my mind around why anyone would care even a little about what a bunch of strangers think.
yea but you need to be over 18 and have a certain amount of followers to, a lot of people say that when they sign up to get paid tiktok shows their videos to less people, which gets the creator less money

He should apologize to his fans about lying and just be honest about the fact that he has been neglecting his girlfriend. Instead of exposing him on the internet the girl should have directly talked to him about her feeling neglected before she did what she did while confronting him about his lie. Open communication is key in any relationship.
From what I understood, she DID try to talk to him first, but to no avail. Her act was an act of desperation. Was it right? Maybe she could have handled that differently, but what's done is done. If they're interested into saving their relationship, him giving an honest public apologise to both his girlfriend and his fans would be the right first step, the rest is... well, seems like the rest would need a therapist, if this experience wasn't enough for him to come back into reality.
Load More Replies...She shouldn't have done it out of pettiness, but this might have been s good lession for his 80k followers to not fall for social media lies. IMO the damage he could cause by performing a fake life was worse than a lovers quarrel, specially if he was baiting girls with a dream guy act.
People aren't set up to deal with a device saying 300,000 people 'liked' your video. Most people would be flattered, some would seek further validation and not rest until it's 500,000 likes. Despite most likes probably being bots...
nta. he lied about spending time with you on //TIKTOK//, and lots of people watch his videos. he shouldn't have tried to get you to say that "oh, it was fake, the texts were fake", because they weren't. he's the one in the wrong here. he's the one who needs to make an apology video or something.
I don't think she will need to worry about conflict with this boyfriend for much longer. Problem solved!
lets start a country and when apple ea and tic tok enter 2000 trilllon dollar lawsuit also ea stands for eletronic arts
I was going to go with DTMFA. He's not worth your time. He used you to create a fake life and you haven't had a relationship at all for months because of his obsession. Do you really want to be around someone who is trying to force you to lie about your life? ...///... Tell him that most losers like him make up fake girlfriends and he should probably get right on that because you aren't his puppet.
My god. Generation Z. And they are supposed to lead us into the future? F**k that.
Think of it this way, if he neglected you because he was writing a novel and you smashed his computer, would that be okay? If your response to neglect is to destroy something important to him, then yes your behavior is a problem too. You should have just left.
I don't think that's a good equivalent. Part of the problem is that he's lying to a bunch of people, who he's knowingly manipulating to be attracted to him. If you're willing to do that, the public might have the right to know you're BSing them. Unless you're using your SO to advance your novel somehow while lying about the neglect it's just not the same.
Load More Replies...Your boyfriend sounds like an absolute douchebag/narcissist. Nothing masculine about a guy posing in front of a camera for followers all day. Gross.
You live in cringetopia and you’re mad you got some cringe juice on your sweater. ESH.
I am sorry, but if she had a problem she should have talked to him not about wash their dirty laundry in public like that. I am not on social media much but what he did is probably quite standard 'influencer' stuff.
I'm so bad at proofreading: she should have talked to him about it, not wash their dirty laundry in public
