Take a good look at these giraffe pictures, because you won't often catch a sleeping giraffe. In fact, despite being the tallest animal, giraffes have the shortest sleep requirements of any mammal, sleeping an average of just 30 minutes per day. And when they do sleep, usually it's just for a few minutes; until the 1950s, researchers believed that these animals don't sleep and argued do giraffes lay down at all.
The giraffe is a prey animal, so many of its habits have evolved out of necessity. Since it's difficult to lie down or get up quickly, sleeping is a huge liability; drinking water is another struggle since the giraffe's neck is too short of reaching the ground. For this reason, they get most of their water from the plants that they eat, and only need to drink water every few days. Sure, these giraffe facts make them already special, but wait until you see them sleeping!
So while these sleeping animals might not seem very impressive, you're witnessing something few people have ever seen! Vote on the one you think looks the comfiest!

They ALL look so lovely and peacefull because they live in a predator free environment like a Zoo in most photos but maybe this one. I spend ten years in Africa and have never seen one a sleep on no safari in any park.. Funny how one left even its tongue hang out totally relaxed. Bravo for your collection. How long did it take you to assemble all these .. How many naps did you have in between? :-)
Resting Giraffe
i look at this giraffe and i see one of God's marvels and wonder how his greatest marvels-mankind- could ever look at a giraffe as a trophy
cute, but All I kept thinking was imagine the neck pain
pictures would be prettier if they hadn't been taken at zoo's...
I don't think they sleep like that in the wild because of predators.
So? The point is to show how they sleep, not how pretty the photo environment is.
please, don't bite my head off and please don't be rude, they were only stating their opinion but I am on Dornishwine's side here, if they were taken in the wild, you could see them when they are more uncomfortable. i'm sorry about that ( looking somewhat forlorn) but i cannot you have made a valid point, Sky
Well, feel free to haul your ass into the Sahara and take some pictures of them, then. Watch out for the lions!
I read somewhere that giraffes have the same number of vertebrae as humans. They'rejjust spaced further apart. My favorite wild animal!
They're not that spaced apart, their vertebrae are just HUGE
They have the same number but are much larger...
