Every once in a while, a blockbuster or an insanely popular TV show comes up and people wind up giving birth to Katnisses (from Hunger Games), Jacobs and Isabellas (anyone out there who still remembers Twilight?..) Eight years ago, the world’s first non-fictional Khaleesis were born. Fast forward to today, not every parent that named their kids that are happy with their choices. No matter if you’re a fan of the popular HBO series or not, you probably could not escape the craze around Game Of Thrones Season 8 – especially its latest episode called ‘The Bells’. Well, the bells are probably calling for name changes all across the country. People are not that happy with how their once beloved fictional queen turned out to be. Will it be a lesson to people not to idealize fictional characters to the point when you start naming your kids after them?..

More than 4,500 babies were named after GoT characters in 2018

According to the US Social Security Administration, out of those 4,500, 560 were named Khaleesi (“Queen” in Dothraki fictional language) and 163 were named Daenerys. Up until Sunday when HBO aired the latest episode “The Bells”, these names stood for brave, independent, and fair queen. Today? Well, not so much. Those who have watched the episode saw Daenerys becoming the Mad Queen and torching the innocent citizens of King’s Landing.

Today, some parents who named their babies Khaleesi or Daenerys are not that happy about their choices

A mother of a 6-year-old Khalessi (misspelled on purpose) recently told the media: “I’m kind of in shock. That was not cool. I definitely don’t like the outcome of what she [Khaleesi] represents. So it’s kind of bittersweet right now.” Although, it must be mentioned that not everyone feels this way. “I have no regrets at all!” a mother of a 14-month-old Daenerys revealed to the media. She added that while she isn’t a fan of how the Mother of Dragons’ story is turning out, she’s not turning her back on the Queen. Another mom of Daenerys said that she doesn’t feel that the change of plot lessens the importance of the character on the show: “I’m like, I don’t feel anything different. It’s not like she did it just ‘cause. If you watch the show, she had every right.” Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how many Daenerys’ and Khaleesis are going to be filing documents for a name change once they turn 18.

That's what you get for picking a big dumb unwieldy fantasy name for your kid!

And that is what poor children get for having idiot parents. Just think of all the peaches out there, or, even worse, the renesmees. Names are nothing to toy with, you give them for a lifetime!

If you’re dumb enough to name your child Khaleesi then no one cares what you think. You’ve already ruined that child’s life.

I like how this comment offended Azirahael Jones. Jesus actually existed. That's the difference. Azirahael's GoT characters are fictional and their kid definitely hates them 5 years later for giving them a dumbass fantasy name just because they're an atheist manchild attracted to fantasy like Game of Thrones because atheism itself is a far fetched fantasy.

It’s so funny to me that some people thought the latest episode was “character assassination” of Dany, when those same people clearly had not been paying attention. Dany has literally shown herself to be a power-hungry tyrant who enjoys burning people who don’t agree with her since as far back as season 2. How the hell could anyone miss that?

The worst part is that Khalessi is a title not a name

All names were just made up words at some point, if it actually "ruins their lives" and people remember this random show in 30 years, name changing is a legal procedure you are allowed to do.

The name Wendy was invented by J M Barrie in "Peter Pan" and there's a swath of a generation of women of that era named Wendy. This is no different.

I'm going to be a little different about this. I don't have kids of my own yet, but... it's a name. Who cares? Okay, the character went crazy, great. But if you like the name, you like the name. I found a character in a video game (Ezio) and even though the character is cool, I'm planning on naming my son (if I have one) Ezio simply because I like the name. I can expect people named their children Khaleesi for that reason, too. There are kids being born and getting named "Adolf." That doesn't mean it's simply because the mother/father hail Hitler somewhere off in the distance. Sure Khaleesi is a "title," not a "name"... in the show. In reality, a child can be named absolutely anything. Not out of meaning, not out of symbolism, simply because the parents decided on a collection of letters to form a name. Their decision. If the child wants to change their name, they can legally do so later on. However, in several years... no. one. will. care. It's a name, the children have.

To be honest, I like the idea of someone naming their kid after a character they enjoyed. But it’s one thing to connect ‘Khaleesi’ to a character and another to assume that the name links to all positive traits without considering the idea that Dany- like many other characters- was written as morally grey.
