78 Posts About The Daily Absurdity Of Having A Job

Neuroplasticity is real. Your brain physically rewires itself every day based on whatever you spend your time doing. Since most of us log work eight hours a day, give or take, our jobs are basically sculpting our minds.

The problem is that a staggering number of modern workplaces have turned into stressful environments.

Recent data from Gallup showed record-high levels of anxiety and worry in the workplace, which is leading to a sharp decline in overall employee well-being.

To make matters worse, only 21% of workers strongly agree that their organization actually cares about their mental health.

If you feel like people around you are less and less motivated and devoted to work, you aren’t imagining it. Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2026 report found that roughly 60% of employees felt emotionally detached from their jobs last year. Almost a fifth described their workplace experience as miserable.

Research shows that while post-pandemic burnout is partly to blame for this disconnect, long hours and toxic office environments are also the villains.

“Improving life at work isn’t rocket science, but the world is closer to colonizing Mars than it is to fixing the world’s broken workplaces,” Gallup CEO Jon Clifton wrote in the report.

When you spend a third of your life in such an environment, the very organ responsible for doing all the work suffers.

Job-related illness, for example, is a growing problem across several countries.

In 2025, a Moodle report found that 66% of US workers had experienced some burnout.

A Mental Health UK survey found that 1 in 3 adults experienced high levels of pressure or stress in 2024.

Younger generations face significantly higher rates of burnout.

In a recent Moodle survey, 81% of 18-to-24-year-olds and 83% of 25-to-34-year-olds reported feeling burnt out. Meanwhile, less than half of workers aged 55 and older said the same.

The main driver of workplace burnout comes down to pure workload overload — people have way more tasks on their plate.

Nearly a quarter of workers said they didn’t have the basic tools or resources needed to get their jobs done.

At least 20% said a poor economy was affecting their well-being at work, and 19% reported stress from taking on too much work due to labor shortages.

When chronic stress floods the system, the brain’s fear center — the amygdala — becomes hyperactive. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex, which handles logic and decision-making, literally loses connectivity.

If this isn’t reason enough to protect our mental bandwidth, then perhaps the financial fallout will wake people up.

According to Gallup estimates, a stressful work environment and burnt-out employees cost the world economy $7.8 trillion. This is equivalent to 11% of global GDP.

You don’t have to leave at the end of the day smoked.

Thanks to neuroplasticity, our brains can grow stronger, build resilience, and be trained for peak performance.

Studies show that taking short, regular breaks throughout the day recharges both creativity and productivity. Even a quick 20-minute power nap can act as a total system reset.

Then there’s the daily drain of endless meetings and emails. While you can’t escape them entirely, you can still set strict boundaries around them.

At least 59% of workers in an AtTask survey rated meetings as the single most wasteful part of their workday. Learning to decline non-essential invites or grouping emails into specific time blocks can also protect your brain.

Ultimately, coping strategies can only take you so far if the environment itself is toxic.

As Michael McCarthy, a Harvard instructor and host of the Happy at Work podcast, points out: “The job may be in your field, the commute may be great, or the pay p****** may be exactly what you are asking for — or more — but that isn’t good enough. It’s critical that the organization is a good fit with your values and offers a healthy workplace environment with effective leadership that will support and nurture you on your career journey.”

Since corporate leaders aren’t fixing the system anytime soon, many employees are taking matters into their own hands — by using dark humor.

Research shows that a good laugh instantly drops your cortisol levels and boosts endorphins, taking your nervous system out of fight-or-flight mode. It gives your prefrontal cortex a brief reset and lets you regain emotional control in a chaotic situation.

Sharing a joke or a meme with a coworker also proves you aren’t the problem — the system is. It turns isolated stress into shared bonding.

At the end of the day, real workplace reform takes time. But you can still choose how you process and react to the chaos.
