Greeting cards never went out of style despite the prevalence of digital technology. Some experts may even argue that they can help strengthen family relationships. 

“The creative process of putting these (greeting cards) together serves an important function in solidifying the identity and values of the family,” says University of Iowa communication studies professor Rachel McLaren.

McLaren says giving a greeting card can also help mend relationships, especially during special occasions. She explains that this simple gesture can do a lot, especially when talking is difficult. 

“Sending a card can be a low-pressure way of reaching out and expressing a desire to talk. Sometimes, a card is just the peace offering needed to clear the way for a deeper conversation,” McLaren said.

According to McLaren, a handwritten note as short as 25 words can increase a greeting card's impact. She says that the effort of doing something by hand can also deepen relationships, even in the smallest of ways. 

“We’re in the midst of a loneliness epidemic, so anything you can do to take steps toward meaningful connections with others will likely be met with appreciation.”

The irreverence of many of the cards featured on the list is what makes them funny. They share an overarching theme of poking fun at life’s absurdities, which Cornell University philosophy professor David Shoemaker sees as highly valuable. 

“By occasionally reflecting on our lives (and the lives of everyone) from the timeless perspective of the universe, to see that none of what we’re pursuing may matter in the end – life itself may be laughably absurd,” Shoemaker explained.

Shoemaker adds that seeing the humor in the absurd can help us face life’s challenges. 

“If we manage to take up that perspective, we may be much better able to cope with life’s curveballs, as well as focus better on the tasks at hand. Sometimes it’s good to be a little psychopathic,” he said.
