Years ago I was in the market for a cat, and a pregnant stray found me. I named her Ragamuffin because she was long-haired and scruffy. She gave birth in my bathroom, and I found good homes for all the little ones and had Ragamuffin spayed. She was my companion for 17 wonderful years. RIP you sweet alley cat.

    AWW 😻😻😻😻😻💖💖💖💖💖

Similar to humans, maternal instincts are strong among animals like sloth bears. According to the India-based non-profit organization Wildlife SOS, sloth bears carry their cubs all day until age two.

Leopards are the same way. They are very protective of their younglings, who depend on their mothers for basic needs like food, protection, and shelter for the first couple of years of their lives.

I don't think the dogs are even the same breed. Babies look like Frenchies or Pugs (they have extremely brachycephalic faces) and the adult dog looks like a pit/pit mix or a staffie. However, as someone who was adopted at birth myself, I can assure you that that dog IS clearly "mama", even if she did not squeeze those puppies out of her own body ;)

The fox who lives on our property had 5 babies this year. They have been a joy to watch. Every evening they do zoomies around our yard. It's sad they grow up so fast - they'll probably be leaving soon. I think their mom is ready though - she looks like she needs a break. :)

This year I had a bunch of fox cubs who seem to have lost their parents (been chucked out?) hanging out in my garden, there was a "big brother" one who seemed to be providing for the rest of them. They were so cute I let them get away with a load of stuff I would usually chase off foxes for, like STEALING MY STRAWBERRIES! you little thieves 😏

The church of England shoot foxes dead in their vicarage garden in Hackney in the middle of the night and shot the vixen leaving behind defenceless cubs. The foxes have been here for decades and cause no harm but this vicar who has just moved in had them destroyed. Please contact Shoreditch church if you think as I do that is is cruel and unnecessary.

Biparental care likewise exists in the animal kingdom, but the roles are sometimes reversed. For water birds like jacanas, the male does most of the work, which includes protecting their territory, looking for food, and teaching their younglings survival skills.

The female, meanwhile, has several mates and is not at all involved in raising their offspring.

It’s almost a similar case with emperor penguins. The fathers usually gather food and teach their young to survive harsh weather conditions. The mothers leave the colony to allow their male counterparts to keep the eggs warm.

The division of parental labor among barn owls is more similar to that of humans. The males are hunter-gatherers, while the females nurture and incubate the eggs.

Alloparenting also happens between animals. Female elephants, being matriarchal in nature, usually become foster parents to newcomers.

Similarly, rhesus macaque monkeys form social bonds with each other and can quickly build familial relationships with orphaned babies.

A lot of people don't realise they're there because they assume a pose that causes them to strongly resemble a broken branch of a gum tree. They simply stand on the branch with their head stretched upward, close their eyes and become a statue!

My GSD mix loves to lay on the concrete even though he has 5 dog beds of varying types and a nice grassy lawn in the backyard XD Since they can't disperse heat by "sweating" like we do, sometimes it feels nice for puppers to lay on a nice cold concrete/stone surface. As long as it's not their ONLY surface (they will end up with permanent fur-rubbed-off patches of hardened, rough skin), it's okay temporarily.

Just an FYI, cedar chips is a much better bedding, especially for animals who go outdoors. The cedar is a natural insecticide, and seems a little warmer. Ticks love staw and hay, easy to hide in. Our dogs had a massive tick infestation one year. Switched to cedar on advice of a master organic gardener, after treating the dogs for the tics and thoroughly de-ticking their area

This is an adorable photo, but, as someone who has worked in rescue, I am begging the public to please spay and neuter your dogs and cats. Shelters are overwhelmed. Oh, and if I hear one more idiot tell me she wanted to have her children see the "miracle of birth" so she didn't spay their animal I am going to str*ngle that person. I did have the nerve to say to one such idiot, "maybe you could get teach the kids responsibility instead".

Yes! Even males (or females who do not currently have a litter) will clean and care for kittens in colonies (or in large-scale rescues like the Furball Farm.) It makes me so happy as cats aren't normally "pack" animals (compared to dogs or humans) but they are very social when it counts: keep the bebbies safe!

This happens with mice, too. I had three does giving birth. Two gave birth on the same day and the third one the next day. But that one spent the entire day before having her babies stealing the other babies and trying to nurse them. The real mothers kept stealing them back but when the third doe finally had her kits, all three of them formed a common nursery.

At the animal shelter I worked at, we had a small farm animal section that had 2 adult goats and a miniature goat in it. The miniature goat was very used to be the center of attention (and loved it) until one day one of the adult goats gave birth (which was a surprise to everyone). The mini goat got SO JEALOUS of the baby, it was kinda hilarious. He'd headbutt the vets when they came to check up on baby & mama.

Look at those barely existing nostrils :( While each individual might be a lovely dog, we shouldn't breed animals with severe deformities.

Yes. Most brachycephalic dogs cannot even give birth normally (the skull of the puppy is too large for the birth canal and the puppy gets stuck, which can result in both the mother's death and the death of the litter as well.) Brachycephalic dogs have to give birth via caesarian section. THEY CANNOT GIVE BIRTH NORMALLY. Please, anyone reading this, think about that if you are considering adopting a Frenchie or a Pug. Over 80% of Frenchies and 90% of Boston terries have to be *sliced open* in order to birth their puppies. They are miserable their entire lives: they have breathing issues, skin issues, and vision issues (eyeballs popping out of their sockets is VERY common in brachycephalic dogs), plus a host of other health problems that exist BECAUSE of their extreme brachycephalic skulls. These look like English Bulldogs, which have to have caesarian sections 86% of the time in order to birth their litters.

Yes! I think these are British Shorthairs - the coat pattern is usually referred to as Shaded (or possibly Chinchilla - hard to tell which from the pic, but I'm leaning towards Shaded.) 5 of the kittens are "Shaded Silver" and the other 3 are "Shaded Golden" like mom :) (though that little one on the end looks like a golden tabby - but kittens who have tabby striping at birth can often lose their stripes as they age!)

From OP on Reddit: "I adopted Sweets several weeks ago, we bonded because she’d lost a previous litter to the elements (from what I can tell she’s spent most of her life living out of a tire) and my own young son had tragically died." Sweets unexpectedly gave birth to three kittens after OP adopted her, so they are both Sweets' and OP's Rainbow babies in their own way :)

OP stated on Reddit that they were told that both cats were already sterilized. Unfortunately they were lied to, and Tot got pregnant. They personally chose homes with friends and family for the four kittens and, as of the posting, Potato already had his neuter surgery scheduled. So, the pregnancy was an oopsie, but OP was being as responsible an owner as they could be :)

So many sparrows in my yard. It's all fun and games until one hears the babies screatching for food for 10 hours.

From OP on Reddit: "We found her outside at night during Christmas so she was a stray. She was meowing loud because she wanted to go inside to seek for shelter. We did not know she was pregnant until 8 weeks later my mom noticed stormy was gaining weight and had a suspicion she was pregnant so we took her the the vet clinic and we saw her ultra sound pics" - "We gave 6 babies away only 1 stayed with us. His name is sunny boy he is so spoiled. She did not cry while giving birth I was with her the while time. Her son jerry lives with our next door neighbor and visits us almost everyday. Jerry is always outside looking for his brother and his mom."

Baby Scorpions Have Very Soft Exoskeletons. They Crawl Up Onto Their Mother's Back And Ride There For 10 To 20 Days Until Their Exoskeleton Gets Strong Enough

A scorpion can have as many as 100 babies in a single brood. They are not hatched from eggs like insects.

... and if Momma Scorp has a hunger, and no one's around to eat, she still has those tiny follow-me-meals she prepared beforehand. Scorpions aren't of the loving type, you know...

What's not noted here, is if the mother can't find enough food to eat, she'll resort to eating her own young.

For many creatures, the survival of the adult/mature breeding female outweighs the value of any one particular litter/clutch of young. It's sad by human standards, but it is "better" for the already-mature adult animal to survive.

I'm almost positive she's a wirehaired Portuguese Podengo. (Or a similar, closely-related podenco/warren dog breed; many are wirehaired like this one.)
