Dad Is Outraged After Flight Attendant Asked His Pregnant Wife To Clean Up After Their Kids, Sparks A Debate Online

Interview

If parents had to name one thing kids are notorious for, it’s likely most of them would choose their ability to turn any place upside down. Doesn’t matter that the mess they make can look kind of cute and unpredictable (just like the kids themselves), resembling an unfinished post-modernistic art piece made of Legos and crayons; it’s always moms and dads who are going to be picking up after their little ones.

Or so you would think: after Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Anthony Bass recently tweeted that a flight attendant made his pregnant wife “get down on hands and knees” to pick up after their hungry 2-year-old, an age-old debate about who’s responsible for keeping such places tidy was dusted off yet again.

Garnering more than 45.8 million views in less than 48 hours, both parents and child-free travelers joined the discussion, offering arguments in favor of and against this dad’s outrage.

This dad was furious when a flight attendant told his wife clean up their children’s mess

Ever since United Airlines’ fiasco in 2017 when an unsuspecting, innocent passenger was forcibly removed from his seat by airport security, most airlines try to be on their best behavior. Of course, when you’re dealing with over-exhausted parents and their restless munchkins, there’s always some room for a viral disaster. That’s especially true when 62% of millennial parents tend to bring their little ones along on the trip, according to a recent report – a steady increase from 44% since 2018. Some of them (22%) even say it makes their vacationing more enjoyable.

With one camp of internet citizens agreeing that the flight attendant could have handled the misunderstanding better, and another who thought this dad might be overreacting – Anthony Bass’ situation is a curious one. Although, not as common as one might think.

While it’s clear that the internet has things to say about the matter, with more than 15,000 people already speaking their minds on Twitter; Bored Panda has reached out to Jacqueline Whitmore, an international etiquette expert and former flight attendant, to get her professional take on this situation.

“Flight attendants are accustomed to seeing a lot of debris on the plane after people get off. That’s why they come around the cabin to collect trash periodically and especially at the end of the flight,” Whitmore told us, recognizing that times have changed since she was in the uniform back in the early ’90s. “For a flight attendant to ask one person to get on her hands and knees to clean up, you almost have to ask everybody to do that. You can’t single out any one particular person. You don’t demand that a passenger do anything.”

Many readers criticized the flight attendant saying what they did was unprofessional

Of course, the best practice in such cases is to hear out both sides – just ask any parent of two. But since we only got to witness the Bass family’s perspective, it’s only appropriate to give the whole situation the benefit of the doubt. “Flight attendants generally don’t ask passengers to get on their hands and knees,” she reasoned. “That is almost unbelievable.” We can imagine Meryl Love, author of the recent Guardian piece titled ‘As cabin crew, I’ve had enough of pushy parents demanding special treatment’ saying the same thing.

But let’s go back to the main issue: who’s responsible for cleaning up after kids at dining establishments or 36,000 feet in the air? It’s hard to know exactly where this conundrum falls between 67% of parents who believe dining places could accommodate families better. In any case, Whitmore thinks it’s important to teach kids from a young age to clean up after themselves. If not to help avoid similar misunderstandings in the future, then at least to raise an offspring who is tidy and respectful of others.

“I think as soon as children can understand, parents should start teaching them what’s right and wrong, including cleaning up after themselves,” she explains. Of course, as a reminder, Whitmore adds that some kids might not be physically or mentally able to do that, in which case parents should take responsibility.

While others thought the dad was no perfect role model either

Cara Goodwin, a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in child psychology and a mother of three, shares Jacqueline’s sentiment that it’s important to teach children to tidy up after themselves as soon as possible. Although, in the beginning, it may seem that the messy effort may not be worth the payoff. “In my own experience, it can be frustrating [at first]. Initially because sometimes it creates more work rather than less work for you as a parent,” she explained. “It is a lot easier to just put your child’s laundry in the bin than to direct a toddler to do it themselves and fix any mistakes it makes.”

One of the ways to get your little ones into the habit of picking up after themselves, Goodwin believes, is to get them involved with chores at home. “Young children have a natural desire to help others and imitate the actions of adults,” she told us. “The approach I used is explaining to them exactly how to help and encouraging their help (without undue pressure) and then praising them and giving them a lot of positive attention after helping.” And if nice words and compliments don’t seem to work their magic, a cookie or two won’t do any harm.

The woman is pregnant, not disabled. Clean up after your children, or get them to help you. The cleaning crew are there to assist, not to be your personal domestic help.

Pregnancy is not a disability. (Being 5 is usually no excuse for not cleaning up but idk the child’s circumstances.) common sense: Your crew; your responsibility. If you’ve put out some good person energy, someone will likely pitch in esp if asked. Grow up.

Dad was not there. The wife was flying alone and pregnant with 2 kids. This could have been handled better but then I doubt we have all the facts. The stewardess apparently spoke to the captain about this and the wife was advised that the captain demanded that she clean this up. That suggests some serious levels of escalation took place and the wife did not act in a way that made anyone want to help her with this mess.

I'm guessing she probably just sat there and let her kids throw popcorn on the floor, had she known she would be the one to clean it up she probably would have taken the popcorn away or told them to stop.

When my kids were little no matter where we were, we picked up after them or they themselves did. 2 and 5 yeah olds know how to do this.i would be BEYOND embarrassed to leave a mess on an airplane. It is just common decency to clean up after yourself. This mother is teaching her kids entitlement.

I've travelled internationally and long haul with my kids a lot. I always pick up after them and leave our space respectable. Hell.. at 5 years old they are the perfect age to get on the floor and pick up the popcorn themselves. Just because there are cleaners doesn't mean we should behave like slobs.

My guess if they behaved poorly, they would have had the offending snack removed, and only let them have more if they are more careful. You are brain damaged if you allow it happen again and again. A FA will be helpful once, especially if the mother is sincere in being sorry. But not after that. You'd be embarrassed, as would I, (and Beck said) but not this couple. 7 or 8 figure income families can't find their big boy/girl panties and be an adult like the rest of us.

1- Who picks up after her kids at home? If she's pregnant and can't care for the ones she has she shouldn't have gotten pregnant again... clearly she isn't in bestest sooo... 2- The kids should've cleaned up after themselves if they made a big mess but the mom shouldn't have allowed it to be begin with tbh 3- The same way I stack my plates with the silverware on top and take a napkin to the table to wipe off any crumbs, drips or whatever else when I'm done at a restaurant is the same reason one shouldn't make a mess "for the cleaning crew" to clean up... COMMON DECENCY AND HOME TRAINING. This is why I don't like ppl smh

Those first comments defending him are from wildly entitled people. "It's the airline's fault for giving them popcorn!" This is why you can't do anything nice for people, they think if you do, they can throw it everywhere and you'll clean it up. Another one compared it to a movie theater - you and your kids shouldn't be throwing sh*t on the floor there either! So many people with Main Character Syndrome. The world does not exist to clean up after your messes.

That was my thought over the cinema, as someone who actually does clean up my own mess, takes my rubbish and feels second hand shame when I see the state other people leave the theatre in. A cleaning crew doesn't mean make the biggest mess possible.

I've posted this comment a few other places so I might a well here too: 1) United doesn't just serve popcorn to people as a routine/free snack, it's part of one of the snack boxes for purchase. The woman bought the box with the popcorn and gave it to her kids. 2) Airlines do not have cleaning crews that come in between flights anymore. If you're lucky the plane gets "deep cleaned" after it's last flight of the day, but.... aside from that the flight attendants have to do the quick turnaround/rest of the plane to get it ready for the next set of passengers. 3) Fun fact - flight attendants don't actually get paid for that. They only get paid for the time the flight is "on the move", so from when it leaves one gate to when it gets to the next one.

Depends on the situation, I guess. If we're talking about 2-3 bits of popcorn that were missed, then yeah, I'd expect the staff routinely has to handle stuff like that. But if we're talking a bigger mess, then it's the parent's job to clean up after their kids, no matter where they are! I would never expect someone else to clean up after my child. Never.

I was thinking the same as you. Was it a small mess of some kernels and crumbs? Or did it look like the kid just dumped a ton of popcorn on the floor? Also... was the mom helping, monitoring, redirecting (etc) if it Was a bigger mess? And did the mom bring the popcorn on flight or was it served as a snack? There is just a lot more to take into consideration... That being said... My mom had to take me and my 2 sisters from the US to Germany by plane when my dad got stationed there. We were 5, 3, and 2 months old. Over the years I've heard the story of how difficult and exhausting it was to do on her own. I didn't make any huge mess (that i know of), but knowing my mom, she would've tried her best to minimize my ability to make a mess and/or have me help clean up after myself.

The semen demon is the size of a coconut, not a watermelon, there is not a problem with picking up after your crotch goblins. If ewifey is unable to due to some medical issue, you should be flying with a nanny / additional person to assist with stuff like this, otherwise, deal with it. You keep spawning them, don't pass them off on others when they make a mess. Either that or board them in a kennel next time since you and wifey don't want to take responsibility for them other than to use them as accessories apparently.

This seems to be missing details. Were the kids literally just eating the popcorn and dropped a little here and there. Little kids handfuls into mouth do have some droppings. Or were they throwing it at each other or dumping it out? Regardless you clean up after yourself when you are out in public. The crew can't clean a whole plane before turnaround if they have popcorn everywhere in a seating area. 22 weeks pregnant? Can't clean? That's barely a bump. Yeah I googled it. So no excuse to not tidy up at least the large chunks. And amazon sells a small portable vacuum for cars that parents might like for these kinda trips to be nicer to staff.

If fellow passengers were feeling that the FA was too harsh, some would have had the decency to assist her, but if the FA had cleared the mess once and the POS let the child(ren) repeat the same activity, then I'd guess they 'let' her have the honors of learning the lesson and clean up while 'crying'..... couldn't learn then either--rinse and repeat. Mr. 7-8 figure salary can either fly with them or hire an assistant to accompany her in the future.

Why do people give messy snacks to their kids on flights? I don't have kids, but most parents let them be slobs at home, so why should they be different on flights? Flights have to turn around quickly, and how would you like to be the passenger who has to sit on some kid's messy food?

I am a bit sloppy when it comes to the cleaning in my own home. But as I am the only resident, I alone will have to live with it, so it can be done to the standards that I set. However when around other people, who might have different standards, a bit of "social grease" must be added to make things run smoothly, and hence I don't allow myself the same relaxed attitude towards cleaning as when I am at home. That other people's properties should be treated with the same level of respect, if not more, than our own property is something children ought to be taught at a young age.

While airlines do have a cleaning crew, they are on a schedule. It's not a case of take as long as needed to clean the plane. That particular aircraft was likely on turnaround. There are people waiting to board. If every single parent does as these and lets their children throw make a mess because "it's OK, the cleaning crew will sort it" that means the plane misses it's departure slot. People waiting to board get annoyed. All because people don't want to take accountability for their own mess/their children's mess.

What is this cleaning crew that so many respondents talked about, do they think magical fairies board the plane and clean it top to bottom in twenty minutes before the next flight?. Commercial airlinercabins are cleaned ever 30 or 45 days, definitely not after each flight. Also the flight attendants are not employed to clean up after passengers, just as wait staff in restaurants are not paid to do the same. You make the mess; you clean it up. In this instance why did the mother allow the child to have popcorn? She knew the child would drop/spill it.

Cleaning crew is there for incidental, light cleaning before the next flight. They aren't there for a deep clean or heavy scrubbing. They don't have time. Many times, there isn't a cleaning crew. And on flights, the onerous is on you to give your trash to the flight attendants. You don't shove it into the pockets, or leave it in the seats or on the floor, and expect it to be cleaned up for you. You are expected to help keep the plane and your area clean.

Ya that is ridiculous, not sure how old the FA is but I'm gunna guess she's not over 30, some "not all" of the younger generation still have ways to go learning about a hard work ethic and quit with the "it's not my job" attitude.

Um I think that just having two toddlers to deal with while travelling should be enough to let it slide. I can't imagine being on any flight with my kids and they are 18 and 22, so cut her some slack, I don't know anyone who can eat popcorn without any getting on the ground, especially while in motion, so cut her some slack, it would be different if the kids left what looks like an he aftermath of a food fight but I'm sure that planes get a good vacuuming and cleaning between flights, (well I hope so!)

This was a commuter flight so likely no cleaning crew before the next flight. The Dad in question is a pro baseball player who was not on the flight. I have flown with two small kids.... I don't give them food that makes a lot of crumbs and I clean up after them so that we're not sitting in filth. Popcorn is also not recommended for kids of that age due to choking anyways.

regarding the supply of the popcorn, we cannot be sure that they chosen by the airline and served by the crew. A lot of major airports have a small mall implemented where you can buy all kinds of stuff, snacks included. So my guess is that the mother herself brought that messy food. And regarding the "above and beyond comment" that was chosen by BP, it is exactly that, something that is beyond what should be expected. Requirering "above and beyond" from a flightatendant is just out of line. You can apreciate when people choose to do it, but not be disapointed when they don't. They cleaning crew's job is to remove dust and dirt, not a million popcorns skattered all over the place by a careless person, or in this case a mother who did not control her kid. And regarding the cinima, you clean up after yourself there too, not just leave waste on the floor (I even grasped that back when I was a child). It is called common decency.

It gets me that people are comparing the plane with something like a restaurant thinking of their kid throws food on the floor they don't clean it up. First you should out of respect second a plane usually only has a few minutes between flights so it's just a quick clean for the next flight plus flight attendants only get paid when they are in the air!! Back to a restaurant. If your kids throw food on the floor clean it up. Yes at the end of the day they sweep the floor for items -food that gets dropped but not they have to stop during their shift to clean your mess and not get to sit another table to make money. I'm sure you aren't tipping them more because "it's their job" Sorry I'm sort of done with my rant

If anything, a plane should be compaired with a bus (some of them are even called airbus'es), not a restaurant. If you choose to eat a snack on a bus, it is your responsibility to do the cleaning, not the crews. Turnover time, which is the time the plane is on the ground and not earning money, is massively expensive to the airlines. Therefore if the crew has to spend half an our or more on cleaning the plane between flights due to som inconsiderate passengers, the bill for this would be high, and that would be reflected in the ticket price. So do your part, and put in the little effort it takes to not leave a mess.

After all, cleaning up after her kids would be her responsibility. But if she asked the flight attendant to do it because she really wasn't feeling well or something, then they could've been nicer.

My issue is why did the airline give out popcorn and then be unprepared to pick up popcorn on the floor? I spill popcorn and I'm 54. As a parent, I wouldn't have been in tears and then ask my famous husband and sister to validate my victimstance. I've cleaned up after my kid in restaurants, etc., because it is my responsibility for my kid not to make a huge mess. As this wasn't a huge mess, and I find it hard to believe the FA took it to the pilot, this seems fairly entitled on the family's side but also wrong on the airline's side. Just clean up after your kid and move on. Why the need to make it a huge deal. Her and the hubby have made themselves out to be douchebags.

Airline didn't serve popcorn, it was brought on to the flight by mom. It was a family sized to boot. She was the one unprepared to clean it up. or put it away once it became a problem. FA can NOT take away a person's property but may be if it was given as a free snack and misused/abused privilege. But no matter what, if the person brought on a snack themselves, it's not the FA's job to clean-up someone else's choice of foods.

I don't have children but I have three dogs. I pick up after my dogs because I chose to have them & they are my responsibility. Does this not apply to children? Picking up a little popcorn is probably the easiest thing she did that day. Her husband didn't seem too concerned that she was flying, 22 weeks pregnant with two small children.

I’m not sure what is wrong with teaching a child to clean up after themselves. Flight attendants, custodians, etc. are not personal servants. It would have been easy enough for the mother to engage the child in play in picking up the large pieces of popcorn to the best of her ability. The flight crew could have handled it better as well. I think everyone is an a*s in this situation.

Some people in the comments were saying that the airline has enough money to hire a cleaning crew, that's what cleaning crews are for, etc. And, I do think every airline has a crew that cleans after every flight before take off. The kids were eating popcorn (which, I don't think was supplied by the airline, as one commenter mentioned). Maybe it's a good idea for the mom and/or the 5-year-old, to pick up the whole kernels BEFORE they get smashed into the floor by said kids. Just because there is a cleaning crew, doesn't mean you get to be a pig and make their job harder than it already is. Pregnancy is not a disability, and if the mom was having a harder than usual time with hers, she should not be traveling in the first place. If the dad was so appalled by the FA's actions (asking a pregnant person with two kids to clean up her mess), he should have traveled with her or ask a family/friend to tag along.

I'm split on this. It is reasonable to expect planes to be cleaned between flights so, no, they should not be forced to pick-up crumbs that naturally drop to the floor. However, if they've made an excessive amount of mess, especially with foods they might have brought themselves (never seen popcorn served on a plane before) then it would have been polite to leave their space as clean as possible because that is the general rule for being in any public space: mutual consideration. The fact that they had kids really has nothing to do with it. If the kids made the mess, then the parents are responsible for however they decide to deal/make kids deal with it, but it doesn't change the dynamic of the situation. Stop being mean about people having children or daring to be out in public with children. These kids are paying for your retirement, they are not luxury poodles ffs.

Shhh. Don't upset the pandas, they will attack anyone who dares to suggest that children are anything other than awful, spoiled, bratty disasters that should never be seen or heard. It seems we have returned to the Victorian era when it comes to children, so long as they're perfect little miniature adults then they're begrudgingly half accepted.

I see a lot of grown up leaving a mess behind, nobody calls them out for doing so...

I would never have given a toddler popcorn on a flight, or had them help clean it up. Builds character.

Why don´t they have this brooms and dustpans with the long handles? Why would she need to go on her knees and pick it by hand? I am all for taking responsibility for your kids actions, but the woman was pregnant, and more then halfway through already.

If she hadn’t been 5 months’ pregnant, I would have no problem with this. However, making a 5-month pregnant woman get on the ground to do that is cruel.

You are probably wealthy so rent a plane. They are paid to clean up your mess.
