In a world where people seem to want their every thought to be heard by loads of people online, comment sections can be overwhelming. About 40% of people who engage with news on social media say they avoid reading or commenting because comment sections tend to be too argumentative.  Everyone brings their own opinion, worldview, and things to say, so true gems can get lost in the noise.

But sometimes, comments are so good that their authors deserve an award for their wittiness, thoughtfulness, and, sometimes, much-needed brevity. Here are some examples of the best comments on Reddit, collected from the aptly named subreddit “Best Of,” dedicated to the best replies people have come across on the platform.

Once when I was around 16 I visited my sister who was at a university in the UK about 100 miles from home. She got invited to a party and I tagged along. Somehow I got separated from her (not her fault or mine really - it just happened). I knew her address but nothing about the city (way before smart phones and sat nav apps). I went to a phone box and called directory enquiries at about 1am. I explained the situation and the operator (who I presume must have been local) gave me directions. I called a couple more times because I still got lost and eventually made it back to my sisters place. Before someone says this is AI slop or made up, I swear that this is absolutely true.

AI is a tool that can be used positively or negatively, much like a knife (which can be used to cut your food or other things into manageable pieces, or can be used to stáb someone) or fire (which can be used for warmth and cooking, or for utter destruction). It's like GMO technology: when developed responsibly by ethical researchers, it can alleviate a lot of hunger, but when developed for profit by big corporations (like Monsanto) it can cause a great deal of harm.

Nobody should have to crowdfund surgery or medical needs. This is horrific on that level, but shows the best of us rallying to help. Please consider helping those in the Midwest right now without power for nine days. We drove through a wee bit of it as it was happening, we were traveling through Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, and three was so much flooding, we were on our way across the country and saw many people coming together to help. Just a thought if you can help at all. I don't know any particular charities, but if you can help with money or food or water, please do it. It's hard to imagine the level of destruction that floods cause, they are so pervasive and what can you do when the sky won't stop falling and there's nothing dry around? (Heck yeah I live on a [tiny] mountain!)

There are other ways of dealing with it, but for me it's always been about having zero unread mails. My inbox still contains thousands of emails, and I'm happy for them to just stay there, such that in five years time if I want to remember, say, when it was that I last replaced the car battery, and the exact model and supplier I used, a simple search will find it, without me having to have thought about it at the time and added labels. (Yes, that's a real example. Leaving my late wife's car unused outside through a freezing winter kîlled it.).
