Vegan Watches Nieces For The Weekend, Her Brother Explodes Over What She Fed Them
Over the years, researchers have documented many positive impacts veganism brings to the table, including individual and public health, animal welfare, and even the fashion industry.
However, the vegan diet isn’t without its challenges, especially in social life.
In the wake of the pandemic, Reddit user Zealousideal_Lime_66 agreed to babysit her brother’s girls while he and his wife enjoyed a rare weekend together. Everything was going well, but there was one problem: her nieces wouldn’t eat the woman’s food.
So, she fed them frozen pizzas, burgers, and other easily available options—something their father was not happy about when he found out.
Watching over kids whose diet is nothing like yours can be more challenging than it seems

Many kids are, indeed, eating too much junk
Children and teens in the U.S. do get a majority of their calories from ultra-processed foods like frozen pizza, microwavable meals, chips, and cookies, a study published in 2021 found.
According to the paper, two-thirds—or 67%—of calories consumed by children and adolescents in 2018 came from ultra-processed foods, a jump from 61% in 1999. The research, which analyzed the diets of 33,795 youths ages 2 to 19 across the country, noted the “overall poorer nutrient profile” of the ultra-processed foods.
“This is particularly worrisome for children and adolescents because they are at a critical life stage to form dietary habits that can persist into adulthood,” said Fang Fang Zhang, the study’s senior author and a nutrition and cancer epidemiologist at Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science and policy. “A diet high in ultra-processed foods may negatively influence children’s dietary quality and contribute to adverse health outcomes in the long term.”
Zhang said a possible reason for the increase may be the convenience of ultra-processed foods—industrial processing, such as changing the physical structure and chemical composition of foods, not only gives them a longer shelf life but also a more appetizing taste.
“Things like sugar, corn syrup, some hemp oil and other ingredients that we usually don’t usually use in our kitchen, that are extracted from foods and synthesized in the laboratory, those are being added in the final product of ultra-processed foods,” Zhang explained. “A purpose of doing this is to make them highly palatable. So kids will like those foods that somehow make it hard to resist.”
So, it’s really cool that the girls’ dad is trying to get them to eat healthy. Not that many do: during the same two-decade period when the study data was collected, the consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods decreased to 23.5% from 28.8%. However, if the slip-up was just one weekend long, is it actually worth damaging the relationship you have with your sister?

But it was just for a few days, and the aunt did babysit the girls for free
After all, she’s a valuable resource. A few decades ago, paying your family for watching your kids may have sounded like a ridiculous idea. But, as the child care landscape grows more expensive and difficult to navigate, more and more parents are turning to grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives for care they originally would have sought from a babysitter, nanny, or daycare.
“You have to think about the financial implications of all involved,” said therapist and life coach Abbey Sangmeister. “The amount of hours, what is expected during that caregiving time, acknowledging there is labor involved in caring for children, is the first step to having a successful relationship.”
As Sangmeister explained, lifestyle and community have changed over the years. “Generations ago, it was a village that helped care and raise children,” she said. “We are seeing less of this, and parents are struggling.” Add to that the rising cost of child care and a growing understanding of just how much labor is involved in caring for kids, and you get a completely different picture.
In 2024, the average two-child family spent $332 on an after-school sitter per week for 15 hours of work. Maybe a few pizzas and chicken nuggets aren’t that bad?
Most of the people who read the woman’s story didn’t think she did anything wrong
But a few said she could’ve been more accommodating
Some even thought that everyone involved could’ve navigated the situation better
Soon after, the woman released an update on the conflict

Dad doesn't meal prep and then gets shirty that his kids aren't eating the meals he didn't make is my take on this.
Same. Bro got mad as Sis because HE didn’t do HIS job. A*****e move. Bet he’s REALLY in the doghouse with his wife over that.
Load More Replies...Let's be clear, there were smoothies and sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. Then for dinner mac and cheese, pizza, burgers and nuggets. Yeah, not the healthiest, but certainly not a diet of solely junk food. And, even if it was, having junk food for one weekend isn't going to be terrible for a couple of children. We don't have to have each meal be balanced. As long as we're getting the nutrients we need over the course of a week things even out. Their parents can provide more nutritionally dense foods. Everything is fine. - - - When my daughter was about 7 she'd have 'feast and famine' times. Some days she'd eat more than her dad, other days she'd eat less than a toddler. It wasn't a problem. We didn't look at what she ate each day, but what she was eating in a week. As long as that was good, there was no cause for concern.
She's the aunt. Aunts are the people in your life that you get to let loose with and have fun. All the rules go out the windows. You get to just be you and enjoy life. Don't steal that joy from the three of them!
When I gift my niece any money as a present I always say to her "The only rule is you must spend it on something frivolous." She has enough other people in her life ensuring she saves and I spent my childhood being nagged about "make sure you save the money" and "don't fritter that away".
Load More Replies...So SIL and brother went away for the weekend- Did they eat healthy all weekend? I bet not. It was their getaway to have a little fun. Well, the girls had a little getaway, too. The brother dropped the ball, not OP’s problem. I’m glad her SIL explained and things are better.
This is funny. It's the first story I've ever read in which it was the vegan who had the lay-back common sense attitude towards what kids were eating, and the omnivores were freaking out about the McDonalds.
You do realize almost all of those crazy vegan stories are made up, right? If anything, it seem meat eaters are offended just by the fact that vegans exist. Remember when rednecks wanted to boycott Cracker Barrel just because they offered just the option of veggie sausage?
Load More Replies...So, dad was supposed to take care of it, and didn't. Then he blamed the sister. Wife isn't buying it. Good for her!
To the commenter who said she could easily have cooked a chicken breast for them. I don't know for sure, but I think vegans are like Jewish people in that something that has touched meat is no longer acceptable to use and must be discarded. So cooking that chicken breast would have permanently contaminated the pan, the utensils and possibly even the oven. For Jewish people if non-kosher stuff touches their dishes, they can't eat from those dishes ever again. Vegans might be just as strict, and if so, cooking that chicken breast is truly NOT an option for her.
My brother is vegan and part-owned a vegan restaurant for years so I know a LOT of vegans. Almost none of them are that militant that they won't use cookware that has touched meat. The ones who are are generally kind of obnoxious.
Load More Replies...Op definitely is not an ahole, and a weekend of a less than ideal diet will not hurt the children. If I was giving advice I would just say maybe try to get a few veggies in with the nugs and the mac and cheese if they (or someone going through something similar) can. Smoothies I assume had fruit, but for almost all people the more fruits and veggies, the better.
I don't understand why she couldn't cook something vegan and appealing to children. Simple vegan pasta/rice dishes would have done the trick. Or why couldn't she supplement the junk with some veggie and fruits. I understand that she was doing a favour to her brother hence it's not fair to expect an enormous amount of effort food wise if it would be difficult for her, but she surely could have thought of a better (and healthier) solution.
She did. They had smoothies for breakfast (full of fruit and veg) and then PB & J sandwiches for lunch (protein, complex carbs). It was only dinner that was junk. The rest was perfectly good.
Load More Replies...wow.. just wow to the holier than thou people who called OP YTA. Entitlement at it's best. She babysat and at least fed them. She could have said eat the vegan c**p or starve. I bet the kids had a ball and they won't die from it. If brother is so picky...stay home with his kids next time
All the YTA people are insane. We are not talking about 2 kids who are regularly vegan already who just spent a week eating c**p because someone didn't give a d**n. We're talking about two kids with normal diets who do on occasion, eat this type of food and spent three days at their aunt's house because their parents wanted time alone and Aunt did the parents a favor. Their children were safe, happy and well cared for but if that's not good enough, well, no problem - because she should not babysit for them again.
If I watch your kids for you, I'm not cooking two separate meals so they'll eat. They'll eat what I cook or go hungry. This is 100% on the parents. At least she bought food for them, which is more than I would have done. I always keep peanut butter and cans of soup in my pantry, I wouldn't be shopping for them.
As usual, the YTA vomments are trash. She's babysitting those kids for free for 3 days, the brother said they would eat whatever she put in front of them, it's not her responsibility to whip up kid friendly vegan food that she knew they wouldn't eat. Why turn Meal Time into a battle the brother can just f**k right off and find someone else to babysit next time
Parents should have been organised rather than forget to do it. However I Absolutely don't understand Why she continously chose crappy junk food?? Scrambled egg on toast is simple. Soup and bread. Cost a tiny fraction of Mcjunk food. Some veggie meals are delicious, some vegan too. I was never allowed junk food and I wouldn't expect it. Dad should have been realistic (they're Not going to eat put before them) and Aunt the same. Dad Should have made those dinners and delivered them, aunt really Could have made considerably better attempts. Being vegan in particular should mean you're right up with knowledge on nutrition. We All know junk food and that Does include mac and cheese is bad for you. She could have introduced them to gorgeous tasty healthy meals with ONE c**p food dinner. There's a reason children are getting Type 2 diabetes which used to be an adults disease
All of that was pretty standard food when I was growing up. One weekend won't k**l them, and they'll probably always think of her as the cool aunt. And no one should ask a vegan to cook meat. That's a recipe for disaster. I know because I'm a vegetarian, and I would have no idea where to start with meat.
I eat a largely vegan diet. Maybe 2% vegetarian. So when our grandkids visit for short stints they get oven ready chicken or equivalent. For longer stays I make them eat vegan meals but more along the lines of things you can’t tell are vegan, if you’re a kid anyway. I know I’m not fooling any meatasauruses. Maybe lentil based stew with lots of veg covered in mashed potatoes becomes a cottage pie or shepherds pie, sort of. Or veggie covered pizza with vegan cheese. Honestly the cheddar alternatives are a LOT better than in days of old. 🙂
If I were OP, I'd think twice about watching bro's kids for a week-end again. 3 or 4 hours for a date night? Ok. But make sure bro brings snacks HIS kids will eat.
When I read the words vegan and junk I figured the kids were talking about the vegan food they ate not actual junk food.
I know the easy way to know that someone is a vegan is that they will tell you, but the OP being a vegan really isn't that relevant to the story especially as she happily bought chciken nuggets etc. NTA.
Usually, vegans/vegetarians only bring up their diet status at meal times. And then they have to deal with the endless stupid questions from meat eaters.
Load More Replies...Idk I think the YTA have a point. OP agreed to watch the kids, not forced or coerced or anything, but was perfectly fine with it. She didn't even get them microwave meals with vegetables, she got them junkfood for 3 days straight. The dad should have obviously not have forgotten the meals he was supposed to bring, but it doesn't really sit right with me to agree to watch the kids they just get them junk all weekend. Sure it won't k*ll them, but there were better options.
Read the update and you’ll change your tune real quick. OP is NOT the bad guy here.
