Sir Patrick Stewart’s final film appearance is set to be in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, but the legendary actor’s private health battle has sparked a heated debate about Hollywood’s treatment of its aging stars.

Stewart, best known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, passed away at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, October 28, at the age of 86.

Highlights
  • Patrick Stewart’s private health battle comes to light following his recent passing at age 86.
  • His final film appearance in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has sparked backlash over film franchises’ reliance on older actors to reprise iconic roles.
  • While some fans question whether the industry puts nostalgia before actors’ well-being, others argue Stewart deserved to keep doing what he loved.

The revelation has prompted some fans to question whether film franchises’ reliance on nostalgia and familiar characters comes at the expense of the people who helped build its legacy.

The actor’s passing marked the end of a career spanning more than six decades.

Beyond his iconic science-fiction roles, Patrick was a celebrated Shakespearean performer whose stage work helped establish him as one of Britain’s most respected actors.

Stewart’s family and longtime spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, announced the news of his passing in a statement shared on the actor’s social media accounts on Thursday, October 29.

“We announce with great sorrow the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart yesterday at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny, following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia,” the statement read.

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” it continued.

The family added that they would always remember “the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

The family also asked those wishing to honor his memory to consider donating to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s caregiver resources.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that commonly affects memory, thinking, and the ability to carry out everyday activities.

Early symptoms can include difficulty remembering recent events, finding the right words, solving problems, or completing familiar tasks.

Lewy body dementia, meanwhile, involves abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein inside brain cells.

These deposits interfere with how the cells function and communicate, affecting several aspects of a person’s health.

According to the UK’s National Health Service, symptoms of Lewy body dementia can include problems with concentration, judgment, and visual perception, as well as hallucinations, disturbed sleep, and changes in alertness.

Some people experience pronounced fluctuations in their condition, appearing relatively alert at one point and confused or drowsy at another.

The condition can also cause physical symptoms resembling those associated with Parkinson’s disease, including muscle stiffness, tremors, slower movements, and difficulty with balance.

Although Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia are distinct conditions, a person can have both.

However, the exact duration of Stewart’s illness and how it affected his day-to-day functioning have not been publicly disclosed.

His family described his experience only as a “brief and poignant journey.”

However, Patrick’s passing and the revelation of his health battle have prompted a fierce discussion online about the entertainment industry’s reliance on legacy characters.

Fans question Marvel’s reliance on aging actors as others defend Stewart’s personal decision to keep working

One critic expressed frustration with the practice, writing, “This is why relying on nostalgia, dragging 90-year-old actors out of their homes to reprise the same role 50 times, and cheapening their legacy in the process is the worst kind of classless cash grab. I hope Doomsday fails.”

Another viewer added, “Ok, this does raise some ethical concerns about the fact that he was still working in multiple productions as recently as late last year.”

But some fans have pushed back against the suggestion that Stewart’s continued work was exploitative.

“Patrick Stewart spent his last moments around friends and his closest partner since the early 2000s for what will now be his final role,” one fan wrote.

“Ethical concerns? He was sick and clearly wanted to keep working,” another commenter argued.

Others emphasized, “Illness can progress quickly, and also Patrick wanted to keep working until the end.”

One comment read, “This is ageism, and it’s actually quite disgusting. Just because he is old doesn’t mean he can’t do what he loves.”

“I’m sure he was a good person who loved the job and the cast and crew. Plus he’s not just an actor, he’s a human being… He had family and friends and coworkers who cared about him.”

The late actor previously said in an interview that he could never imagine retiring, even as he grew older

Notably, just months before his passing, in an interview with TV Insider, published in July 2026, the actor reflected on continuing to receive offers despite being in his mid-80s.

“As any actor my age will tell you, there are fewer and fewer available roles as we get older,” he said.

“That being said, I still continue to receive interesting offers, and I love being challenged by new work, like voicing a pig’s head in Riz Ahmed’s brilliant new series Bait.”

He further told the outlet, “I can’t imagine ever officially ‘retiring.’ I’ll always and forever be an actor.”

Stewart reprised his iconic role as Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, which will mark his final film appearance.

He finished filming his scenes in September last year.

“You think they forced him? He was working because he wanted to, on his terms,” one fan wrote

I'm sure the choice to continue working was his and his alone. Anyone suggesting otherwise doesn't understand what being a performer is all about. Why else do they think so many continue doing what they love into their 90s if they are physically able to do so?

There is no controversy here. BP does seem to find the most rancid and stupid POS on the internet to quote.
