5YO Wants A Shrek-Themed Party, His Cousins Can’t Come Due To Parents’ Religious Views
Shrek is the beloved cartoon ogre who has become as iconic as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. But as today’s story shows, he could also cause strain among religious families.
Reddit user Acceptable_Pick_4664 wanted to throw her five-year-old son a Shrek-themed birthday party. However, the chosen motif offended her brother, a devout Christian.
The original poster (OP) was left in a tough spot between her child and sibling and asked the TwoHotTakes subreddit for advice.

People remain devoted to their religion despite the potential conflicts it can cause among loved ones
As the story shows, religious differences may cause tension among families. Yet, some people aren’t willing to compromise for their beliefs’ sake.
Brigham Young University professors Dr. David C. Dollahite and Dr. Loren Marks discussed a possible reason in an article for Meridian Magazine.
“Religion both generates and addresses (and may even resolve) a variety of struggles, including relational ones.”
To explain their point further, the two academics gave specific explanations.
“Religious beliefs, practices, and communities offer various ways for adherents to frame and understand trials and afflictions: a punishment for sin, a crucible that purges baser motives, a way to learn humility, a path to holiness, a way to show love to God, or a way to develop moral virtues, among other possibilities and interpretations.”
Handling religious conflicts within the family is about finding balance
According to author Nycollas Marshall, balancing tolerance and civility is key when handling religious conflicts among family members. Marshall is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he grew up in a household with different Christian beliefs.
“Some behaviors an individual should generally not tolerate would be rudeness, insults, and physical violence,” he wrote in an article for Medium. “You should not accept anything that makes you uncomfortable.”
“Don’t be hostile, don’t engage in debate, and answer honest questions (how you determine which questions are honest is up to your judgment).
“Be easy to talk to, be easy to live with. The harmony we aim for requires both parties to cooperate, yet it takes one to destroy it. Make sure you are not the obstacle to peace.”
In today’s story, it only makes sense for the OP to continue with her planned themed party for her son. As for her brother, having a mature, open-minded, and uncontentious dialogue could fix the problem and prevent new ones from arising.
Most commenters didn’t understand the backlash against Shrek and were all for pushing through with the planned theme

Never change a winning theme! Shrek is OK. Manipulative people who punish a 5 year old by not coming to his birthday because the boy loves Shrek, aren't. Glad to read his parents won't change the theme.
Keep your kids well away from this religious trauma. Go low contact or no contact. Take it from someone who's been there. There is nothing to respect about this. What they are doing is not about personal beliefs, it's brain washing, controlling, and frankly, it's abusive (not the party thing, the isolating children from anyone with opposing beliefs, from science education, and telling them that Godly and therefore also parental love is contingent on behavior, specifically, on behavior designed to oppressed normal sexuality and make women submit to men). It's hard to see the damage when it's how you've been raised, even with some distance, but going back and looking at this subculture from an outsider perspective can be very eye opening.
Same. I have spent decades deprogramming this religious BS, but it's never truly gone. Once they have their claws in your kids psychology or emotions, they will create lifelong damage. I'm one of the lucky ones that escaped the cycle, but I'll never be "healthy." I still feel guilt/shame for having normal, human relationships. Don't get me started on the intimacy issues. The abuse is couched with love, so it's almost impossible to separate yourself from it.
Load More Replies...Mindless religion-worshipping can suck the life out of people. I had a good friend once that was a fantastic fanfic writer. She was in the process of having her first original novel being accepted - when her husband decided they should be 'born again' (this was in the UK, btw). First on the agenda was not to write unless it was purely about Christianity. Also, her fanfic had to go, even though she'd been writing for 6 years whilst married to him. Previous to that, she'd asked to add her fanfic to my Archive, and it was very popular & well-written, but he forced her to contact me and have it removed. Religion sucks donkey poo. We don't need religion to be good peeps, we 'apparently' need it, so that other human beings can control us. 'Free will'. Ha.
I'm LDS (Mormon), and I fully support Shrek for anyone from 1 to 100. Bouche and Audi fully support Puss In Boots. I think Bouche has a bit of a crush on him, to be honest.
But what about Shrek is against God? It's a made up character for movies, it's not like he is the devil or anything like that. I haven't seen the Shrek movies in some time now but can't remember there being anything regarding religion in any of them.
Nothing is wrong. They're the kind of religious nuts that make people who actually DO know the gospel truth look bad because they've screwed up the meaning of the Word of God so terribly, people don't want to hear the TRUE gospel.
Load More Replies...Religions have layers. Likely OP's siblings are just clinging on to the exterior layer aka what they THINK they should be doing and forgetting what God's message actually is aka the core. As a Christian, I'd say have a SHREK-ing good time and if those outer-layer clingers don't want to come, their loss.
My boyfriends parents are this 😂 you say ‘no I’m not changing the theme’ - because these kind of people need to realise they and their religion are not the centre of the universe.
Even Jesus was against "religious" people also known as Pharisees. Dear God see me giving more money, see me praying more, etc. I have read the Bible (use to be a Sunday school teacher). I can't find anywhere that Shrek is anti-Christ or anti-Christian.
There is no winning with zealots. If it's not Shrek, it's literally anything else under the sun that doesn't come directly from their priest (or whatever they have) or magic cult book. Kids having fun is sin. Ogres are sin. Loving people for who they are inside and out is sin. Fun itself is literally sin. Anything that gives you joy that isn't dripping with religious zealotry is sin. If you give in, you'll be sending your son to their kids parties, where the highlight will be speaking in tongues. Let them walk away. Protect your child from them.
Prefacing this by saying I am an atheist ex-Christian and I love Shrek and have let my kids watch Shrek BUT….there are ALOT of adult jokes in Shrek eg “do you think he could be compensating for something?”, scene where Farquad (um…F**k Wad) is watching magic mirror pictures of Fiona, in bed, shirtlesss. Like, let’s be honest with our selves, they are there. So I can see why a very conservative, Christian crowd would keep their kids away from it. It’s OP’s kids party, they can do what they want, but it seems the consequence is that the cousins don’t come. Yes, they may not be coming because their parents have a stick up their asses, but I guess that’s the decision OP has to make: cousins or Shrek theme. My SIL had a Pennywise theme for her son’s 5th birthday - I hated the theme but not enough to make my kid miss the party.
I agree about the content. Shrek is often used to explain the concept of 'double address' in children's media. It's where it addresses the child and the adult as well, but with the expectation that the child will not 'get' the adult jokes. Understanding the nuances of writing is not exactly the strongest skill set among conservative Christians in my experience though ;)
Load More Replies...Absolutely not! Poor kid! I lived through that kind of repression. My mom destroyed our Disney movies by burning them in a bonfire because of her psycho Christian indoctrination. It was hell. She made all of her kids massively depressed and really f****d us all up. The OP should do his best to give those nieces and nephews a taste of normalcy as that might be the only lifeline they get till they turn 18 and can escape
If it were me, I'd have a Shrek themed birthday party for my child, and their friends. Then I've have a separate meal for family. That way the child gets to have their prefered party, and we still get to spend time together as an extended family.
Tell them you'll also have a jesus figurine for them to gawk at, then do it but make it a pinata. Give the kids roman outfits and some sticks....go at it. Theme it "Bashin' of the Christ"
It's an lighthearted fairytale where the biggest monster is actually a human. There aren't even any real devel or demon characters in it, unless it's in a blink island you'll miss it moment I can't recall. It's a good story of finding acceptance against intolerance. You gave to be in one of the extreme weirdest religious factions to dissaprove of that. Plus Jeses said something like, "do not judge lest you be judged yourself" right.
Oh good, less people to cater for, less people to be there disapproving. All round win.
Religious objections so often are not about religion. They're about control.
Catholics love Shrek. The reviews of Shrek in Catholic newspapers are almost unanimously excellent, and multiple Catholic schools have put on their version of "Shrek, the musical". Most Christian newspapers from all denominations love Shrek. I have no idea what looney-toon batshit fanatic nutcases this person's relatives are, but they are definitely the extreme fringe.
Funny how the majority of the world is influenced by a book ("The Holy Bible") & the adult version of imaginary friends ("God", "Jesus" & "etc".). Who had absolutely nothing to do with that book, which has been written & re-written many times over by only men. Typical!! 🤭
I read the title as a 50yo, not a 5 yo and thought it maybe a little unusual but also a fun party. Maybe I'll do a Shrek theme party for my 50th in a handful of years lol
Eh, I loved watching The Mask and Men in Black when I was a young child. Couldn't have been much older than the 5 year old when those movies first came out. Shrek is nothing. It's less harmless and more child friendly. The family is uptight fantasy and fairy tales aren't corrupitve. A lot of those kid stories preach good vs bad and good wins. Is there some sort of Shrek cult that I don't know about that cause harm? Lol
Oh, my Mom's dad was Catholic and my Mom was Catholic. She watched Shrek with us when it came. I grew up in Methodist Church and became atheist in my 20s. Not because of Shrek, but because half the stories have no sense in any sort of logic in my eyes. And people use the guise of religion as an excuse to control the masses. Like religion has cause more harm in the name of God than Sherk ever would. Full of hypocrites if you ask me. Either this "God" is loving and we're all his children or he's extremely selective, judgemental, and spiteful. Can't have it both ways. If we're created in his "image" why do we hate on people of skin color, culture, other religions, or sex/sexual preference? Like, good grief people. You're tripping and really need to learn some critical thinking, than just blindly accept what you've been told because "that's how it's always been."

I believe Shrek is a great theme for a kid's party. I also believe that if the cousins' parents find it offensive, they absolutely should not send their children and explain to to those children why. It is beyond the pale for them to take the mother to task. (FWIW I am a child of clergy, grew up with strong religious guardrails, and was not hounded for going "off script" for my choices as a parent)
This is really bizarre out what is the issue with Shrek?? Why would this be offensive I'm just not getting it. I mean it has all the fairy tale characters in it. Three Blind Mice, Big Bad Wolf, three little piggies there's really nothing about this that a sacrilegious so I'm baffled. Do they just not want to live any kind of secular life whatsoever?
Because a LOT of churches teach it to be so. And the people attending dont question it because they'll be condemned to h*ll for it. It sounds like your church has been one of many that are good, thoughtful, and caring. But theres also many that really are just after control.
Load More Replies...I can’t believe they asked if a kids movie theme is appropriate for kids. OP’s family is a special kind of stupid.
Here's a simple solution- have a little family get together (nothing extravagant, just a dinner or cookout) with a little cake (or cupcakes) and ice cream. This way your son still gets to enjoy his birthday with his cousins. That will still allow you and your husband to throw the theme party and not worry about family members not attending. Your son will feel extra special getting to celebrate his birthday twice. We've done this in my family for years (for non religious reasons)! It's a win-win all around.
So, these people are offended by a fictional character in a fantasy story? That really is over the top.
That brother is going to be shocked when his kids decide they don't want anything to do with him after the s****y childhood he's giving them.
The OP, should 100% have the themed party. Have a short but true answer for the kiddo if he asks why his cousins aren't there, Their family doesn't like Shrek parties, so they stayed home." Also, "Sorry you won't be there well miss you. Let's set up a visit for a few weeks from now so the kids can hang out."
Some super religious people ban Harry Potter too. I don't understand why. Good triumphs over evil.
I was raised the same way back in the 80s. Should have seen my.patents reaction to Nimh when we got a tape of it. 5 mins in, straight into the stove. No Captain Planet, HeMan, thunder cats, Casper, romper-room (cuz of the magic mirror), snow white, Cinderella...anything consisting of magic or "new age" stuff. And definitely no last unicorn. Didn't bother me none, I had the outdoors. Grew up in a farm and the fields, valleys, forests were my back yard. So that's what I did....spent all my time outside. Especially in summer. School let out and I was gone till 2 weeks before school started. Having learned how to butcher and hunt at a very young age came in handy. Though these days I rarely eat rabbit. Not sure I can bring myself to.
Tell them you will drop Shrek for a biblical theame if they personally come over part the water in the swimming pool and lead the kids and neighbors I to the promised land ...
I may be wrong, but I think some of these ultra conservative Catholic/Christians (who don't seem to actually follow the church) think fairytales are like witchcraft? Like, taboo? Idk, that's all I can think of for why they'd ban Shrek.
I don't know if they are Catholic or another Christian denomination that went to a Catholic school but having grown up as a Catholic (thankfully no longer) even Catholicism isn't this nuts!
Sounds like the family is one of those that spoils Christmas by not allowing the kids to believe in Santa Claus.
Far better to have them skip it, than attend and complain the whole time. Seems like a win. People like that will find something to be offended by no matter what.
It’s a kid’s movie. I could understand the relatives if the theme were Satan or Shootings. But… Shrek??? Well, it’s your child BD. And their choice to let their kids attend or not. I suggest you have a conversation with them and ask them why they think Shrek is not appropriate. Maybe when they start trying to explain, they will realize how ridiculous the whole thing is!
I am religious but not Christian. What other people do is not my business. I don't have to agree with them or them with me but what neither one can do is interfere and push the other to accommodate us with some made up, entitled, stupid reason. I'm offended by something that has no basis in my beliefs therefore you shouldn't do it and if you do I'm not coming. Don't come. Stay away. Send a gift. But making up stuff and using religion as an excuse is just stupid and dangerous. Its a kids party. Shrek is amazing and also has a beautiful message. I want everyone who comes in contact with me to leave having a good opinion of myself and my faith. They are showing a very ugly side and its not helping them or their children.
I only came here to see the expected anti-Christian "outrage" (from the same people that wouldn't dare say anything negative about Islam). The BP echo chamber didn't disappoint
But we're disappointed with you. Always have been. Shrek is anti-Jesus? As a better man than you used to say, "Come on, man". And are there Muslims who object to Shrek-themed parties? If so, they should hang out at your house and bond with you. Oh, btw, that "echo" is the voices in your head.

All so-called 'Religion' is simply a fabrication of humans anyway, with there being no proven 'truth' to any of the teachings. I'll never be able to understand anyone who will condemn others for not abiding by their own belief foundation, which has no proven fact basis for the belief system they so vehemently defend to their core, while they so eagerly condemn others for not adhering to their unproven beliefs. Religion is a systematic indoctrination method to bring others into sanctioned cults. It's important to people, but is toxic when it comes into conflict with the 'non-believers.'

Religion is a systematic indoctrination method to bring others into sanctioned cults. It's important to people, but is toxic when it comes into conflict with the 'non-believers.'
I can't really understand the whole religion thing. It's 2024!! And go Shrek!
Maybe you should think about what age you teach your children to recognize evil.
