You don’t have to be single, committed, or tangled in a messy “situationship” to agree that proposals can be magical, heart-stopping moments. That is, of course, unless the proposal ends in heartbreak. Or worse, ghosting.

One man thought he had it all figured out. He spent weeks planning a surprise proposal, complete with flowers, cameras, and a dreamy cabin tucked away in nature. He coordinated with her best friends, picked the ring, and imagined her reaction when he got down on one knee. But reality had other plans. His carefully planned proposal took an unexpected turn, leaving him heartbroken and confused. Keep scrolling to find out what happened.

Studies suggest public proposals face higher rejection rates because the pressure and attention can be overwhelming

There are few words as powerful as “yes.” From getting permission to visit a friend as a child to landing a long-awaited promotion as an adult, hearing those three letters can make an ordinary moment feel unforgettable. But some yeses carry much higher stakes, especially when it comes to love and marriage. A marriage proposal can feel like the beginning of a dream, but real life doesn’t always follow a fairy-tale script. Sometimes, despite all the hope and excitement, the answer is simply no.

Interestingly, saying no to a marriage proposal isn’t always as simple as rejecting love. In I Don’t: The Case Against Marriage, Clementine Ford challenges the fairy-tale view of marriage and explores how turning down a proposal can be an act of autonomy and self-preservation. Still, hearing those words can be deeply painful for someone who has spent time imagining a future together. Whether someone says no because they don’t believe in marriage or simply because the timing isn’t right, understanding what shapes that decision can clarify why proposals don’t always end with a “yes.”

Marriage was once a way for women to leave their parents’ homes and gain independence, but expectations have changed. As dating coach Dudu Nhlabathi explains in a News24 article, people are now more thoughtful about whom they choose to marry, viewing marriage as a partnership rather than a necessity. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology analyzed 374 anonymous accounts from Reddit and Weddingbee.com and found that factors such as timing, setting, and relationship dynamics can influence whether a proposal is accepted or rejected.

Interestingly, the study also found that public proposals are more likely to be rejected. While flashy, Instagram-ready moments might look perfect online, they can put immense pressure on the person being proposed to. A private, thoughtful proposal often leaves more room for genuine emotions, whereas a public spectacle can feel overwhelming or embarrassing. Another reason proposals fail is when couples use marriage as an attempt to save a struggling relationship. A proposal cannot fix communication issues, unresolved conflicts, or mismatched priorities. If a relationship is already on shaky ground, asking someone to get married may only create more confusion and hurt.

People may also say no for many other reasons, even when love is present. They may not feel ready for marriage, feel apprehensive because of painful family experiences, or worry about repeating the mistakes they’ve seen in other relationships. Financial stability can also play a major role, especially for couples considering buying a home or starting a family. Ultimately, a person may need more time, security, or confidence before committing to a lifelong partnership. A romantic proposal alone cannot replace that sense of readiness.

Openly discuss the rejection with your partner to understand their reasons and feelings

Sometimes, a proposal is rejected because it simply doesn’t meet expectations. After years of imagining the perfect moment, a thoughtless or rushed proposal can leave someone disappointed. Grand gestures and expensive rings aren’t everything; what matters most is showing genuine care and understanding. Ultimately, a proposal should reflect the relationship, not just the idea of a perfect romantic moment.

Regardless of the reason for rejection, communication is essential. Being honest about your feelings and listening to your partner can help both people understand what went wrong and move forward. While rejection or being ghosted can be devastating, leaning on loved ones, giving yourself time to heal, and reflecting on the experience can help you regain perspective. Sometimes, a painful “no” can teach us important lessons about timing, compatibility, and resilience.

In this particular story, the man was left heartbroken after waiting three years, building a life with his girlfriend, and finally feeling financially ready to propose—only for her not to show up. Imagine the excitement and anticipation giving way to silence, confusion, and unanswered questions. He had spent years looking forward to that moment, only to have everything fall apart. His experience is a painful reminder that even our most carefully planned moments don’t always turn out as we hope.
