Expressive Animal Portraits Reveal Their Strong ‘Human’ Emotions

Many of us see animals as human beings’ equals, so it’s only natural that some photographers see them this way as well. Vincent Lagrange, a professional photographer in Antwerp, Belgium, captured the human side of beautiful animals by taking serious and dignified portrait photography shots of the sort that we humans like to take off each other. His photo series is called “Human Animal.”

“I tried to take these animal pictures as if they were humans, depicting their emotion and human-like characteristics in a somber way,” Lagrange told Yatzer. And indeed, the serious mood of these pet portraits encourages us to examine animals’ faces and read into their emotions.

Legrange was inspired to shoot the animal photography series by his cat, Dwiezel. Understandably, he said that the hardest part of this studio photography project was getting the animals to sit still so he could get the shot he wanted!

There is a beast with heart of cold stone that dashes like lightning, shreds flesh from bone. // Bewitched by this beast, I fell to my knees. My mouth babbled madness and mumbled soft pleas. // I stared down the ravenous, gnashing dark maw of a cute cuddly kitten with yarn in its paw

Great photos - beautiful detail and an interesting experiment in what we see in other living creatures.

"Human emotions", hah! Where do smug humans think their emotions came from? We just inherited the same emotions experienced by our nonhuman forebears as we evolved. It's the height of arrogance to think our emotions are "different". We can just express them in more destructive ways than nonhumans do.

These portraits are wonderful! The only one I couldn't identify was one pup that looked like bald, miniature Cholo. I would love to know the identity of this breed to see if my instinct is close or way off.

It looks like a baby Chinese Crested to me, but I'm no expert.

The photos are good but they certainly don't express any emotions that we choose to interpret via them. We are limited by matching animals expressions to our own and thinking they feel what we would feel at that time but it's simply not true. People think that dogs smile, for g*d's sake! No they don't, they just appear to because we smile. Most of these photos don't even make me think that there's any emotion to interpret anyway.
