Europe is sweltering under record-breaking temperatures this week as a heatwave, caused by a giant bubble of warm air from the Sahara, wreaks havoc across the continent. Temperatures have reached as high as 43 degrees Celsius (110F) in France, leading to deaths and catastrophic crop failures.
For those of you from hotter climates, at the ready with your "meh, that's just a normal day here" comments, remember, Europe is not used to these kinds of extreme weather conditions! Houses are insulated against the winter cold, and air conditioning is rare. It hit almost 40C in Poland for goodness sake. Poland. This is not a country you would usually associate with such summer heat!
Europeans are dealing with the hot summer temperatures in a variety of ways, from the typical deadpan humor to more practical solutions. Scroll down to check out the reactions for yourself, and if you're in Europe right now, keep yourself and your animals cool and safe!

“Beat yourself to death with it”?! That’s freaking hot!!
Load More Replies...Feeling for all of you. Here in Montreal we often reach low 40s with humidity in summer, and then -30 to -40 with many feet of snow in winter. Stay hydrated, check on your neighbours, especially those who are elderly, disabled, those with children. Take care of each other.
We are certainly a witty bunch. But for the life of me, I still don’t understand why we don’t all have air conditioning...
I expect for a lot of people it doesn't seem worth the amount it would cost for the few mega-hot days we get. I do have air con in my bedroom though and can't recommend it enough.
Load More Replies...Statistics show that heat waves like this are becoming more frequent due to climate change, and are something that Europeans are likely going to have to get used to. “Monthly heat records all over the globe occur five times as often today as they would in a stable climate.” Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research told AP.
"This increase in heat extremes is just as predicted by climate science as a consequence of global warming caused by the increasing greenhouse gases from burning coal, oil and gas.”
I live in France. I'm dying from the heat. If you wonder why is there a 😱 face, it's our face currently due to the climate. Edit: Thanks for the upvotes, I never got so much! 😄
Imagine being pregnant. I mean, not only pregnant, but due. Like TODAY !!
Load More Replies...The thing is, they have air conditioning so that it doesn't kill them. I don't think AC is as common in many parts of Europe.
No, nobody I know has air con in their house, luckily a few of the schools do, but at home you have to buy a fan or suffer :/ (uk)
Load More Replies...We're not in Europe but it's 32C here and we all want to die. My Canadian self can't handle all this heat. I can't imagine how it is for you who had 35C+ for days. We have heat waves here every summer but they don't last that long.
That's the reaction the French had after there loss to the USA Womens Soccer game.
We say this in Australia EVERY SUMMER but ppl still burn their dogs feet
yes but your dog can have a shock when you put him in something too cold to fast
Two things. 1) You don't get mosquitoes if you change water often. 2) According to what I am reading about heat wave in Europe, I doubt water will stay in container for long. It will either get used by critters or it will evaporate.
Load More Replies...The controlling force of the weather is the Jet Stream, a fast-flowing wind-river that loops around the northern hemisphere at a height of 10 kilometres. The Jet Stream's behavior is linked to Arctic ice cover, which has decreased in recent years.
"The forecast from climate change models and the actuality of the last few years has shown a change to this Jet Stream," Al Jazeera's Rob McElwee said.
"It now has much greater loops, draped over North America and Eurasia, whereas a tighter, straighter flow used to be the norm. A looped Jet Stream induces long-lasting, low-pressure circulations and high-pressure domes," he added.
Such a set-up has drawn air up from North Africa, in a southerly breeze, to cover Western Europe. Over the coming days the hot weather will be increasingly confined to France, Italy and Spain as a cooler breeze flows across northern and central Europe.
Is that a real heat index image, or did someone PS it?
It's not just France on that weather now, there's Belgium, the south of England, the Netherlands, part of Germany, part of Spain and part of Switzerland also shown!?

Sometimes it is really unsafe to work in heat. And making mistakes can be lethal on building sites.
Here in Switzerland the workers are not protected when the weather is extreme. It's a scandal! Those who do the most dangerous and hardest work are the less paid. This is a worldwide problem. These men deserve respect. Without men working in these conditions they world economy would be at a standstill.
Load More Replies...Dim Coumou, a scientist at the Free University of Amsterdam, also said that melting Arctic sea ice is affecting atmospheric circulation, which in turn makes extreme weather more likely.
“Data analysis shows that the normally eastward travelling summer circulation of the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes has slowed down, including the Jet Stream,” he said. “This favors the buildup of hot and dry conditions over the continent, sometimes turning a few sunny days into dangerous heat waves.”
Heatwaves can become really dangerous when they take place in early summer. Europe's 2003 heatwave resulted in the deaths of an estimated 70,000 people, let's hope that this year people are better prepared for the incoming inferno.
My dogs keep trying to go out to sunbathe so I'm not entirely convinced of that!!!
Load More Replies...Edit: And on top of that, in many places here it's not the norm to have air-conditioning at home! We make do with opening the windows at night and drawing the curtains/closing the shutters during the day.
Load More Replies...It's so stupid that people keep saying stuff like this. "But it's always hot in x and y." Yeah it is but they're better equipped for it and used it and it's just different? In the Scandinavian countries they can deal with meters of snow, yet another country would just shut down if it would snow that much. Just like +30degrees (celcius) might be a regular temperature in some places, it's wrecking in another.
Poeple whose bodies are not acclimated and homes are not designed to deal with heat can DIE of it.
I would also like to add to the point that only newer cars have air-conditioning and only knew a building survey air-conditioning and the UK and Europe are full of old buildings with no air-conditioning nobody that I know I’ve ever known has ever had air-conditioning in the house and we’ve got temperatures of 42+
Thankfully I have air con - have done for a few years in my bedroom. It is worth doing if you can afford it and have a building that you're allowed to fit it to. I will be spending today in the one room with my dogs!

Was talking to an Indian gentleman from Jaipor in my car today and he told me the roads in India and made out of a specialist material that doesn’t melt as they have regular temperatures of 48C
That material is good for hot indian climate but probably would be destroyed quickly in local winter time when water that have seeped in all cracks freeze. Different environment, different requirements..

I visited the Georgia (USA) Department of Transportation where they analyze everything and formulate roads (different asphalts) depending on temps and many other factors. They are built to withstand the local weather, but if the weather gets weird for a while, the roads could suffer.
This is so odd. I have never seen this in the California deserts. We must make our roads out of different materials. Even the little roads, not highways or main thoroughfares, do not melt or show much damage. They do take damage over time but not like this.
That is if you leave them outside or in your car. The few moments you are using them outside should not heat them up that much. I used to live in the desert and only saw that if I left my phone in the car.
Unfortunately also many Android phones don't work well in too hot or cold temperatures. I live in Finland and all my smarthones have been Android phones. I have seen my and other people's Android phones stop working when the temperature is - 25 Celsius and colder or +25 and warmer.

Yes, it's correct name for a polish person. When i speak to Polish co-workers, and say please polish this surface,, i say please Pole-ish this :/
Load More Replies...You can either say “a Polish person”, or “a Pole”. Neither is offensive, both are the correct and generally accepted terms. The original Polish word for a Pole is POLAK, which, together with the Polish immigration to the the USA, has been used as a derogatory term - a Pollack. Yours truly - a Pole, or a Polish person 😁
Also, “to polish a surface” and “Polish” are pronounced differently. The former: the vowel is like in “stop”, the latter: the vowel is like in “go” in British English version.

As an Australian most of this advice is good BUT you should reapply sunscreen every 2 hours on scorching days. Always better to be safe than sorry. This is the best motto Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunnies. It’s a simple as that.
I also thought 4 hours is too long. I usually have to reapply spf 30 once an hour and 50 (on tattoos and face) every 2 hours.
Load More Replies...The belief that you lose most of you heat through your head and your feet is a myth.
Indeed it is. Most heat is lost through the arms. The head is only the main conductor in winter when every other part of your body is wrapped up tight.
Load More Replies...Why not use fans? If the fan makes you feel cool, it's cooling you. Even in high humidity (unless it's literally 100%), a fan can help sweat evaporate faster than if you used no fan at all. (which I learned by growing up in the South where 90+ degree days and high humidity were the norm during the summer)
If the humidity is too high, your sweat won't evaporate. The fan motor will create heat.
Load More Replies...Many of these are okay, some are totally wrong or just weird. - Make ice cubes and...what, exactly? Ice is actually not an efficient way to cool your body and can actually be dangerous if you are overheated before applying the ice. The frozen towels are a good idea, but the use of gel cold packs are easier and more efficient. ** Fans move air around and make you feel cooler, this is true in humid or dry conditions. ** Cotton is awful at keeping you cool, especially cotton knit. Cotton holds in heat once it becomes damp. Polyester wicking materials really work. ** Do not put ice in pet's water during really hot days, offer cool water. ** Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. ** Do not put ice directly on your skin for extended periods of time. Better cooling is achieved with the use of special cooling neck wraps. Using a cooling neck wrap in tandem with a fan offers exceptional cooling.
Do NOT put ice in your animals water if they are showing symptoms of heat exhaustion. It can put them into shock.
My dog doesn't let ice stay in her bowl, she has to eat it. So I have to be extra cautious that she's not overheated before hand!

If you get the right curtains, not only do they blackout the sun, but also block the heat in the summer (to a reasonable extent) and the cold in the winter. And they make your house as dark as a vampire's lair! That's my favorite part, since I suffer from chronic migraines!
Load More Replies...See lots of delivery drivers almost ready to pass out. Last heat wave I tuck a wet towel on the neck of one poor sod and checked that he had a drink. When the wet cloth gets warm, wave it around to cool it and re apply to neck. Used to be a delivery driver and was told I was lucky to have opening windows.
As an American who has lived in the southern tier of states and on the south eastern coast currently it is a foolish idea to not use a fan when the humidity is high. The breeze from the fan will help to more quickly evaporate the sweat on your skin allowing you to be a somewhat cooler and keep your clothes mildly damp instead of thoroughly drenched without the breeze. As I was a shipyard worker welding ship components in a shop on a pier we did not have the luxury of air conditioning so we used fans to stay comfortable and drank cool water. Without the use of fans we would become exceedingly sweaty and our clothes would be sopping wet within an hour inside the shop with all the windows and doors open.
Can someone explain the "do not use fans...use ice"? Use ice for what, exactly, and how?
Omg that’s like going to Star Wars Galaxy Edge at Disneyland California right now
I know this one, the same happened about 4 years ago... But yes, I would always prefer a lake over those public swimming pools there - too many antisocial stupid teenagers while at the lake you only have annoying families but at least more space to escape from them. ;-)

I've seen that yesterday at my local Tesco. I just wanted chicken steaks...
There are sections in American grocery stores that are cool enough to need a sweater even on the hottest day. I suspect the unit went out.
It isn’t being bombastic. A lot of Europe (United Kingdom included) just isn’t prepared to handle this type of intense heat. Many people do not have access to air conditioning or do not live close to ocean or lakes to cool off. Local pools are jammed and spending too much time in the sun’s intense heat is the perfect method for turning into a human lobster 🦞 Now excuse me while I go stick my head in the freezer..
Load More Replies...As previously stated, it's because we're not prepared. I just don't know how you guys can stand it with no air conditioning! Be safe! I hope you at least have a/c in your cars.
It's simple, we can't. We're not used to such temperatures. Moreso, A/C actually heats the air outside with the heat taken inside, so it doesn't really solve the problem, although of course it's heaven to get some in stores or llibraries. The best would be to sleep all day and wake at night...
