It’s hard not to feel sentimental at the start of a new year. The changing of the calendar year represents a time to reminisce about what has changed in the last year, what you’ve achieved, lost, and how time has flown, and entering a new decade makes it feel all the more profound. But some people on Twitter are getting emotional over something much bigger than themselves: our beautiful planet, which just turned 2020, if you were napping during science and history lessons for your entire compulsory education.
Check out these birthday wishes that have people desperately asking if this is a joke or a meme. It is, right? Right?

Funnily enough, when we looked up sources on the age of the planet, the top suggested searches were “how old is the earth 2019,” “how old is the earth 2018,” and so on. Apparently, the new year gets people curious. So, if 2020 sounds like a number so large and imposing that it must encapsulate all of our planet’s existence, wait until you hear about 4543000000 (give or take a few hundred million years. When you count that high, it’s easy to be off by an amount of time that’s still longer than mammals have existed.)
The absurdity of supposing that January 1st must be the birthday of all of existence makes you wonder what the significance of the start of a new year actually is. After all, once we figured out how long it takes Earth to complete an orbit, how did we start turning our calendars to a new year not on a solstice or any astronomically significant day, but plain old January 1st?
The answer, the ancient Romans would have told you, is ¯_(ツ)_/¯. It’s the first month on the list. Or, well, it has been since it was added to come before March. February came along later. Then they debated the distribution of days between months for a few hundred years, partially driven by various emperors wanting the months they introduced to be the biggest and best ones. Miraculously, out of this highly civil, scientific process eventually came a calendar that stuck, and we think it’s working pretty well.
Happy arbitrary beginning of the unit that we use to measure journeys around the sun. May this be an educational year for all of us.

I strongly suspect some of the comments about the earth being 2020 years old were jokes. There was someone who genuinely thought the calendar year was the age of the earth a few years ago and it turned into a meme.

Yes, some of these are surely jokes, but some are not. I am so tired of Americas being seen by much of the rest of the world as idiots. I pray our educational system can recover from decades of destruction by republicans. Many people are not even aware that the dismantling of public education is part of republican ideoloy. Of course republicans will deny it. People who think republicans support public education are prime examples of how successful their lies have been. Betsy DeVos has perhaps been more active in this regard than most. Every action she has undertaken has undermined public education, from slashing its budget, to pushing for its privatization.

Republicans will fall into fits over my words, but I hope others can see the truth, that Trump is not the only rich republican who “loves the uneducated.” All other rich republicans do as well, because keeping the quality of public education low, keeps many people ignorant. Ignorant people believe the parties lies. Ignorant people ensure that they can continue to bleed less rich republicans and democrats alike, and give more benefits of every kind to the rich. They don’t care about anyone else. They send their own children to private schools.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they have all lost their proverbial marbles. The Earth is 4.54 Billion years old but the onset of the death of Jesus of Nazareth is 2019 years old. Hence our calendar which stems from the Gregorian .

While I can't be sure, from the look of some of the profile pics, most of these folks look pretty young. That being said, there really is no accounting for the level of "fact resistance" that a great number of today's young people seem to be saddled with.

First, I'd like to say, even if you are a Bible Banging Christian, you still have to realize that the world is older than 2020 years because BC is Before Christ. Second, to those who think the world is only a few thousand years old, let me present it to you this way. God is omnipotent. He can be anywhere, at any "time" and any situation He chooses. Time means nothing to Him. Man, on the other hand, had a need to separate his past from his present and his future. Man created time to do just that. So while we look at things in a linear sense, God is not defined by time. Therefore, a day for God could be a million years for us and visa versa. Therefore, our concept that the world is only 5000 years old means it may actually be 5 billion years old.
