BREAKING: Dog Meat Market Responsible For 33% Supply In South Korea Is Being Shut Down

Animal lovers around the world have a reason to celebrate as one of the biggest dog meat markets in South Korea is about to shut down . “Starting off with the removal of slaughtering facilities and cages in the market, we will ultimately stop the dog meat trade in Moran Market,” Seongnam city official Kang Won-gu told The Korea Herald. The market has seen 80,000 dogs sold either dead or alive each year and has been responsible for supplying one-third of the dog meat consumed in South Korea.
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Seongnam Mayor Lee Jae-myung said, “Seongnam City will take the initiative to transform South Korea’s image since ‘the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.’”
Jang In-young, a spokesperson of the The Korean Animal Welfare Association, commented: “Seongnam city took a big step toward changing the dog meat industry here… But we will have to constantly monitor dog meat shops in the market (to see) if they really stop slaughtering dogs and change their business.”
Moran Market was infamous around the world among animal right activists for their brutal dog killing methods, such as electrocution, hanging, or beating canines until dead.

Why is it okay to kill thousands of pigs, chickens and cows for food, but not dogs? You're only an animal lover when you love all animals.
I agree, and I'd support the end to all meat markets. But in this instance it's being shut down due to the cruel form of execution.
The same kind of outcry came out over accusations of cruelty towards chickens meant for meat a while back.
+1
I don't have a problem with the consumption of meat. I have a problem with the mistreatment of animals raised for meat.
If the particular animal is more useful in another capacity than as meat, then it stands to reason we wouldn't consider it a meat source. I think with dogs, we find their companionship more valuable than their capacity as food and, therefore, the psychological notion of "don't eat your companions" plays a role. That's why cultures that didn't evolve a strong bond with canines tend to be fine with eating them and we are not. It's unfortunate for the pigs that we didn't make friends with them, but even their capacity to learn doesn't diminish their value as a meat product. On the contrary, it made them the ideal meat source as far as the explorers were concerned. Pigs are hearty, intelligent animals that can survive in a wide variety of conditions without human intervention and, therefore, could be a ready source of food once settlers arrived.
This was my thought, but I didn't have the nuts to post it. People only like to save the animals they think are cute. Otherwise, they don't care.
This article gives a very sanitized version of how dogs are executed in SK (and China, for that matter). They believe animals that die in the midst of horrific pain release adrenaline in the meat, which tenderizes it. I will spare you more detailed information, but it is easily found on the internet. At least in the US, animals raised for slaughter must be stunned before being killed and there are efforts to make the process as humane as possible.
In all honesty, I think the fact the animal gets killed is a far greater concern than the 30 seconds leading up to its death. I've never heard a human go "Yeah, my sister was murdered but it was a humane murder", ya know?
Jane that was exactly my thought after reading this. Gandhi also said "be the change you wish to see in the world' in other words, lead by example. I'm just hoping stopping this, is a step in the right direction towards stopping animal cruelty all together. You have to start somewhere.
Jane, would you say the same thing if this was about the closure of a cat meat market? While technically I agree with your statement, the truth is that dogs are extra special. Humans have had a very close bond with humans, for well over 40,000 years. Basically, dogs are children with four legs. They even think, and act as we do. Dogs are extra special.
Yeah, then again, people who have pet pigs and pet goats and pet geese would tell you the exact same thing. I also find it more horrific to think of dogs being slaughtered for food, but that's only because of the culture I was raised in.
Of course I agree that it is brilliant that this industry is being closed down, but we need to stop the acceptance of killing any animals
I agree, It depends on the country you are from. For example, I eat beef and think nothing of it but someone in India would be horrified. I have a hamster and my sister has a rabbit, and I'm sure many people in the world think its a huge waste that we don't eat those animals.
Alright, settle down, one thing at a time.
I've always found it so bizarre that people can be 'animal lovers' and feel compassion and all that, yet discuss it while eating a burger. To each their own, I guess. I can't. I can't imagine looking at something and going "I don't need to eat you to be healthy because I have easily accessible alternatives everywhere I go because I live in a western country, but I am choosing to to kill and eat you anyway". My own personal conscience just can't justify it.
1. most of the dogs are stolen pets 2. the dogs are beaten to death or burnt alive 3. eating dogs can spread cholera and rabies
From people who always talks big like you, I'm still waiting proofs that any meat animal you nominated (pigs, chickens and cows), can be able to do what dogs are also used to with their capacities and uniqueness : they feel your feelings and your intentions, they can alert you when you're going to have a seizure or smell if you have any bad disease or even pregnancy, they understand what it fair and unfair, feel your fear or your pain and sympathize with them, they understand your priorities, they are used to smell drugs in airports, explosives (even in war grounds, mines and such), dangerous foods, electronics that could contain pedo-pornographical material, they are used as therapy for sick people and kids or people with mental and physical disabilities (autism, alzheimer, seizures, anxiety problems). They hunted with our ancestors for food and helped us to be where we are now.
Have you ever wondered why so many people have such strong emotions over dogs? Because dogs have been our loyal friends, partners, even protectors throughout the history of mankind. They trust humans, they can do anything, even sacrifice themselves to protect, to love, to help their masters. There are no other animals on this planet that can trust and bond with us that easily, only dogs. It is like they are born to be the link between humans and the great forgotten nature. They are friends to us. So NO, we should NOT eat them.

A step in a good direction.
They ALL need to be shut down! And Chinas dog meat trade and festival are even worse!
That's true, but most of Chinese people are against it too . We're not monsters. I am not good at English. But I have to say.
Exactly. I loathe China because of its dog and cat meat traditions. These images fuel nightmares.
Elizabeth: Why won't anybody get it??? This isn't about eating dog or cat food, this is about the way these people kill those animals. They die the most horrible and painful deaths, sometimes they even have to suffer months before (to "prepare" the meat). God damn it, just google it.
Back when people still had to hunt, we got whatever we could. Even rabbits, squirrels, pigs, cows, lamb, horses and dogs. You ate to survive. Why are cows and pigs so different that dogs? Oh because we have created new breeds and deemed them cute and pet worthy yet the others aren't.
Then how about pigs, turkeys, bulls, chicken and more? Anyways, pigs are smarter than dogs yet have more stronger feelings than dogs.
