We humans are meaning-seeking creatures. The question 'why?' has pushed us to explore the mysteries of the universe as well as the depths of our existence. But in the process, we learned that not every revelation brings us peace of mind.

Reddit user Yoloextreme345 made a post on the platform, asking everyone on it, "What is a fact you know off the top of your head (preferably disturbing) that you probably shouldn't?" and people immediately started sharing things they would like to forget.

From ancient funeral practices to modern celebrity lives, here are some of the most popular answers.

The more the ice caps melt, the higher the likelihood that some ancient bacteria is released and ravages our population.

Not so much the Ice Caps, but the Permafrost. The former is largely devoid of organic material, but the latter is essentially a frozen bog. And the permafrost is thawing out fast.

What even worse scientists want to play with all this c**p too. Like yeah I know, but someday it could be our down fall. And but if another country got a hold of it. It wouldn't be good either. But why do experiments on it. Like that just asking for something bad to happen, but at the same time I reckon we need to know about it. But it worries me so much.

the likelihood of bacteria be compatible to modern bodies (aka able to live inside) and be ignored by immune system is extremely low, but don't worry, with all ice melts, we will die anyway

50 Scary Facts That People Shouldn't Know But Do, As Shared By People On This Thread A Jewish doctor treated Hitler’s Mother(The only person Adolf ever truly loved) while she was dying of cancer. He promised his eternal gratitude to the doctor and even after becoming a pathological anti-Semite and later the Fuhrer, he was true to his word and was adamant the doctor and his family be placed under protection from the purge. While some may think this an act of genuine kindness, I just think about all the lives lost because Hitler never stopped to think that all Jews were capable of good and not just the one who happened to have been good to him because of immediate proximity..

50 Scary Facts That People Shouldn't Know But Do, As Shared By People On This Thread In ancient Egypt, the deceased bodies of beautiful and high ranking women were left to decay for several days before mummification to discuourage necrophilia by the embalmers.

While Herodot did indeed write about such practices after visiting Egypt, most of today's egyptologists think that this might have been a myth. Herodot not only visited long after the "golden times" of Egypt, but also made up a lot of incoherent stuff (like "gold-mining ants in the indian desert") and did not speak the language of the land. So most of his knowledge was either second hand or literature.

It doesn't need to retract it to wrap it around its skull - that how its tongue is placed, and yep, it does protect the brain from injury that could be causes by the bird banging its bill against a tree. It also bangs its beak against the tree to communicate, and also drills nest and roosting holes. However, the cushioning is just an additional benefit. The primary reason that the tongue wrapped around its skull is that the tongue is so long that it needs a place to coil when its retracted. The tongue can be 1/3 of its body length.

Humans, being mostly Carbon, can be made into diamonds. I plan to go the cheaper route and have my ashes be rolled into a glass paperweight. Some day I might even end up on the shelf of a Goodwill for $2.99 Edit: 3000 points has unlocked another, also disturbing fact. Snow is so sound deadening, that your kid could be building a snowfort, have it collapse, and you wouldn't hear their cries for help. Even worse is when they're tunneling into one of those parking lot plow piles. They won't hear the plow coming.

I don't have a stomach either. Most foods will digest through a combination of chewing and going through the intestines, although it can lead to malabsorption and we generally need vitamin supplements for life as a result. Some people find certain foods completely impossible to eat, or suffer from various reflux and other issues, but mostly you wouldn't notice us!

There was an awful case in the UK of two schoolgirls being murdered. The man who murdered them was their school janitor and he'd been at the forefront of volunteer search parties and had been interviewed by local media about the girls. His girlfriend, who was a classroom assistant at the school, also gave an interview to local media, and she spoke about the girls in the past tense, even though at that point, they were still officially missing. That triggered more detailed examination of the couple and their alibis, and searches of their house, and eventually he was charged with their murder. At the time, there was a lot of discussion about how the perpetrator of a crime might get involved with the investigation of the crime, pretending to be a good samaritan volunteering etc.

That happens a lot. When the sketch went out for the Scarborough Rapist in the Toronto area a good looking blond guy went in and volunteered his DNA. He chatted with the officers for awhile too. His DNA was put at the bottom of the pile. Had they checked it sooner he wouldn’t have killed 3 teenagers, one being his wife’s sister (she was only girlfriend then). Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka.

However, the vast majority of missing persons cases are resolved, with 98% being resolved within a year, and 85% being resolved within a week. So we're talking about fewer than 0.6% of all people reported missing.

Not just that but in a lot of the USA, houses are not well insulated. A loss of power means a house at an unsafe temperature. Somewhere like Arizona, no air con because of loss of power, you could easily get sick from the heat.

Quick tip if it comes up: You can purify non-chemically polluted water by sealing it in a clear plastic bottle and leaving it in the sun for about 10-12 hours. That should be long enough for the UV to kill even the tough stuff like giardia.

Adding on, put a few drops of bleach in relatively clean river water and leave them to sit for a few hours and you’ll have clean water. I can also now say I drank from New Hampshire river water and didn’t get sick.

A lot of folks, casual preppers for instance, don't realize just how quickly things will get bad even for folks who planned for it. They often have their methods & supplies but rarely realize just how quickly we'll decimate the wildlife and edible plants. One particular simulation started with the assumption (for demonstration purposes) that only one major city survived per region - NY, Seattle, Oklahoma City, etc. Then showed how as people started foraging for edible plants, hunting/trapping/fishing, anything to get food, within 3 months the animal population within a 100 mile radius was all but gone. Within 6 months, it as 500 mile radius and most plants within that 100mile were also gone, and so on. The rate it expanded slowed down as large amounts of people starved or went nomad, and people went back to small community gardening.

A damaged line can lead to a cascade failure - one grid fails, another one gets overloaded, the next one gets twice the load etc. Happend in 2006 - a powerline in Germany got shut down to let a ship pass below it and that led to a blackout through the whole of northern Europe

Some guy that is into "living off the land" sees this as a problem of "gathering" and fails to mention that all of our current society depends on electricity and can only support this many people with it. Even if every person in the world had the skills of people that lived 400 years ago there would be massive starvation and fights over every possible resource.

That's not a bad thing. Asking for permission is a total pain. It requires a huge amount of work, because the regulating authority can't see the final work. It's very much easier to get a yes or no decision when you've done everything to your own satisfaction.

Let it rest overnight in a bucket of cold water. Then rinse and wash at 40 C. if that does not help enough, you may use chemicals like peroxide. Blood has protein in it and by washing at 60 C or higher, the proteins will solidify. Same as boiling an egg - it will go from liquid to solid.

Hydrogen Peroxide creates an enzyme reaction and neutralizes the blood stain. The reaction includes foaming and generates heat but it is safe for the person applying it. Then rinse with cold water only. If you don't have HP, use cold water with or without salt.

There was a famous incident of a chemist lady (Karen Wetterhahn) who was running some experiments involving it. I highly recommend the YT video about her by ChubbyEmu. Cliffs Notes version... she was gloved up but spilled a couple of drops on her hand. It went through the gloves and absorbed into her skin, unknown to her. Then she started developing symptoms. As soon as she knew what caused it, and knowing it was a debilitating death sentence, she started documenting every step of her life as it progressed, hoping it would benefit science in the future and people could learn from it. And we did... that knowledge gained was invaluable and heartbreaking.

Look up the story of Carl Wilhelm Scheele. He was a chemist, and a bit of a genius, and discovered loads of elements like molybdenum. But part of his investigating the properties of the chemicals he discovered was tasting them-he died in his early 40s, poisoned by some chemical he'd discovered, or from the combined effects of many of the chemicals, compounds and elements he'd been experimenting with. And look at Marie Curie-even her cookbooks are too radioactive to handle, let alone her scientific notes. Being a scientist is dangerous work.

And free or not, it also doesn’t guarantee they’re going to be any or or even have any interest in doing more than the minimum for your case, because court appointed attorneys make the minimum amount—-a fraction of what they’d get working in a law firm or in a DA/Prosecutor office—-as they’re paid individually by the courts.

In Georgia it USED to be $50 but only some jurisdictions/judges collected it. In my 10+ years as court appointed i never once collected it or even asked for it. In the US for the most part, court appointed attorneys are paid by the interest earned by private attorney's IOLTA accounts and offset by govt. funds as well.

I thought a Public Defender worked pro bono in these situations as part of their career as a lawyer. When their time should "come around", they serve the public. So, if not how much DO they charge? The Miranda reads, "if you cannot afford one...". So?

I work as a tour guide in London and got training on how to give a Jack the Ripper walking tour. Do NOT look up the crime scene photos from his last victim. He obliterated much of that poor woman. It's very harrowing.

I reluctantly went on a Jack the Ripper tour once and was worried it would be glorification of gore but the tour guide was GREAT. He was very clear from the outset that these were real people with hard lives who died horribly and not some titillating story. He was so respectful to the victims and to the history of the story.

If you touch something you shouldn't, touch it again in the same place and the police can't get a fingerprint as one distorted the other. Edit: This is no longer true as technology has solved the "issue". So wear gloves or don't do naughty things without consent.

Palm prints are also comparable. Additionally the lack of a whirl or loop can indicate that it's a person missing a finger which is far less common than a person not missing a finger thus placing you firmly into the group of potential suspects.... better to leave no prints I would think. Not a csi though

Apparently, fingerprints of children can evaporate quickly from surfaces unlike those of adults which leave an oily residue. That makes it difficult to get fingerprints of abducted children from the inside of cars.

They haven't really solved it. Fingerprinting has been shown time and time again to be very unreliable. Most comparisons are done visually by human "experts" and identification is done by comparing "loops and whirls" with as few as 3-5 "points" of similarity being used as the basis for "positive" identification even in MURDER cases. In recent years there's been more persistent questioning over the belief that everyone has wholly unique fingerprints, as individuals can still share similar points of comparison leading to false identifications. Then of course there's also the fact that transferring fingerprints from one surface to another is incredibly easy. They can claim to solve as many "issues" as they like, a halfway decent lawyer can call into question every bit of evidence collected by police.

This all depends on how deep you go. Cut too deep and you get rid of the nerve endings and infections is what will kill them. Thinks of burns or road rash. Very similar. 2nd degree burns are far more painful than a 3rd degree one. With 3 degree, the nerves are gone, the skin is dead, and you need a graft. 2nd degree burn keeps the nerves alive and quite lit up. You wouldn't care about the cold because the air currents would light up your nerves and you would be squirming.

Yes I saw that, it was discarded, still alive, onto a pile of dead bodies. The long version of the video shows the sadist who was doing the skinning that day deliberately doing it whilst the racoon dog was conscious and laughing whilst doing it. It's at least normal to break their neck or gas them first. I couldn't sleep that night after that video.

I can only speak of my dear old cat, not humans. She had a peaceful, slow way to passing, and while it was clear that she is nearing the end, for about a week it was not clear exactly when she would go. Then on her last day I knew immediately that it will be THAT day. She smelled exactly like autumn leaves. Never been near death before, but I guess the knowledge might be stored deeper than personal memories. Sure enough, she did go in about 12 hours. I kept the top I was wearing that day for a long time, because I could smell that autumn scent on it, and it was the last thing she left behind.

Though most of them also only assault people they’re related to or are in some other kind of relationship with, it is also possible that, in the right circumstances, or more precisely, the perfect opportunity, they could assault a stranger. Because sexual assault really isn’t about sex, but about control. Having the control over their victim(s), and being the one who decides if they live or die. They’re generally men—-though women do sometimes commit sexual assault, those numbers are nothing in comparison to men—-who don’t feel in control, especially around the women in their lives, so seek to have control by force. Then there are the pedophiles, who have a fetish for small children. That I believe is a crime of sex, and also disgust with one’s self afterward, which is why some pedophiles also kill their victims.

This is one of those idiotic totally made up "fAcTs" that are not just stupid, but completely unknowable. What, did they pay researchers to follow people their entire lives and note all the murderers they passed by noting the sign that they wear that says "I am a murderer"? This is as stupid as the swallowing eight spiders in your sleep. All totally made up b******t.

36 is merely an average number, based on statistics and average life span. Most people will never pass by a murderer, yet others, like prison guards and cops, will pass by lots of them in their lives.

Sounds worse than it is. You have to remember that they’re not necessarily people who prey on strangers, as most murders are committed by someone who is related or acquainted with their victim(s)—-I put the plural in parentheses, as most murderers only kill once, and only during something like a blind rage or irresistible impulse. So the vast majority of those 36 will not be a danger to passersby.

A perfectly healthy person can have a seizure at any point for no apparent reason. The human brain has neurons misfire all the time. 99.999% of the time you don't notice because there's no noticeable effect, but if the wrong couple neurons misfire at the same time it can induce a seizure. Also doctors sort of allow everyone one seizure, obviously they investigate the cause of it and reoccurring seizures are treated differently but if they can't fully explain it and it's a one off they just accept it. I discovered this when my son had a seizure as a baby and had to attend their regular "First seizure clinic".

I have non epileptic attack disorder. It randomly started one night whilst I was asleep and had a grand mal seizure, my partner was in bed with me and called an ambulance, I awoke to paramedics at the end of my bed and me having no clue as to what had happened. I can have none or anywhere over 30 seizures a day for no apparent reason. They cause zero damage to my brain, although I have injured myself plenty by falling down at random times during a seizure. There are no signs that i can detect that I'm about to have one, so each time I do, it's a total suprise. I have grand mal and partial waking seizures, so sometimes I'm totally out, and other times I can see and hear what's happening around me. Fun times.

Bf had that no real reason seizure back in early 2000s. Nothing since then. Of course it causes worry, but the doctors basically said that sometimes people's brains can crash for no real reason and if it's an isolated incident, it's fine. That did help with the anxiety

3 months ago I fainted while cleaning in my kitchen. I came to and was completely confused as to where I was and what was going on. It wasn't so much as I forgot, but more like I felt as if I'd entered some weird other dimension, where normal life stuff made no sense. I was taken to the ER, and they couldn't find anything wrong with me so they called it a panic attack. I've had panic attacks before; this was NOT that. I've looked up seizure symptoms and it matches what I experienced. Never had one before, hope to never have one again.

Me too. Mine started when I was going through a divorce. I couldn't sleep, I was anxious all the time (I have two sons and was splitting custody). Ended up on the floor of a Walgreens, not knowing where or who or what I was doing. Went through so many tests: drug tests (including anything otc), CT scan, MRI, psychiatrists, and no answers. All they could tell me was it was called Frontal Lobe Seizures and there's no real reason for getting them. Mine lasted a few years, where I would go 6 months or more and then have one in my sleep. Was placed om Lamictal and I'm finally 2 years off the med and no seizures in 6 years!!

50 Scary Facts That People Shouldn't Know But Do, As Shared By People On This Thread That Robert Pickton, serial killer in British Columbia, used to dispose of bodies at a local fat rendering plant, meaning that many of the products made from that plant, think gummies or anything gelatin related, likely contained human remains.

This is a bit misleading. He had a hog farm and his own processing plant. Some of the bodies were fed to pigs, some were ground up & mixed with the pork meat, etc. Which does mean he could've ground misc. parts up & mixed in with the pig parts to be rendered. But the various stories/explanations come from him, and he claims he was framed, so whatever he says we have to take with a grain of salt. We know very little about what actually happened to the bodies as there's almost no evidence since he'd been working for over 30 years and the previous investigations into him (prior to the final takedown) were bungled pretty badly.

Yes. I can see where a convicted serial killer would enjoy taunting the public with the possibility that they ate parts of his victims without knowing it. Because people who are f****d up in the head like that are also egotistical a******s who revel in making people feel disgusted. Like saying “You’re worse than me. I only killed and disposed of them, but I never actually ate them like YOU did. So I must be better than you are”, or something like that”. Real d**k move. So yeah, more likely a lie than the truth.

I worked on this investigation in 2003. I was not (and am not) a cop but a was a civilian member of the force hired to help process the farm/crime scene. I did not find or see anything of any judiciary evidence that I know of. It was an extremely sad situation. So many people lost their lives to this man because the police didn’t take reports of their disappearances seriously, given that they were séx workers. It was also an extremely unusual job. I’m glad I did it and helped in some very small way bring justice to the victims and their families. I don’t think I’d do something like that again - and frankly, there shouldn’t be a need for it.

Also, sadly, many of those sex workers were indigenous women with drug problems, or escaping terrible home situations of abuse and many other heartbreaking life situations and sadly ended up on the streets. They had people who loved them and reported missing by their families, but disappearances of indigenous women weren’t/ aren’t taken seriously by authorities. No one bothered to look. Also, one a different note, the pig farm was right at the very end of Pitt River Rd in Port Coquitlam. It is a very long road. It starts out as a lovely street with houses and also a Mobile Home Park. They’re very common all over B. C. and are lovely and extremely well cared for neighborhoods. Really nice places to live. I know. My uncle lived on Pitt River Rd. The good part.

This is Canada, and while technically part of The Americas, is not usually referred to as America. But, America, as in the USA, has a pretty big population, and when these things happen they are VERY sensationalized in the media, so it may seem more prevalent than it is. It certainly would be interesting to know what goes on in places like India and China, with enormous populations. If they don't have serial killers, or they just aren't reported/treated the same way.

The US military conducted chemical weapons tests on 60,000 US service members during WWII. It was kept secret until the 1990’s and wasn’t widely known until NPR wrote an investigative story on it in 2015.

Sorta related: Chemical "burns" aren't necessarily painful or fiery-feeling. "Burn" just means they alter the chemistry of your body. A lye burn will turn your hands yellow, and you won't need soap to wash them, because it turns the fat in your skin to soap. Been there, done that.

I've learnt of some uncomfortable facts from some Aztec (Mexica) fammily which has been passed down from generation to generation, though I don't know how true this one is: During a ritual, Aztec kings used to bring some victims up the tall pyramid so they may be sacrificed to their gods. Typically, these victims were tossed along the side of the very jagged rocks and we're usually found dead at the bottom. The priests would gather the bodies and cut them up for distribution to the people according to importance, so the king got the best piece and his family and the other priests received some parts, etc. They inevitably ate these pieces as part of their ritual. Of course they didn't just munch on them, they prepared them like any other meat and usually ate them with soups. Fast forward to the time when the conquistadores came from Spain. These guys show up not long after some ritual took place, then the Aztecs welcomed them in and shared their food. You can figure out by now where this is going, these conquistadores ate the soup so they inquired about what it was made of and sure enough they found out. Although eating human meat was a big no no, the Spaniards actually enjoyed it. So when they inevitably conquered over the Aztecs, they ended up keeping the recipe of that soup. Instead of using human meat though, they used pork since they've said that it tastes similar. We still eat that today, it's called Pozole (Pozilli).

The term long pig comes from the Fiji term of the same meaning, first recorded in mid 1800s. The foreigners, mostly brits, found it descriptively pretty accurate, and it spread from there.

One of the reasons the Aztecs were conquered so easily is because the surrounding nations HATED them and did anything they could to facilitate their extinction. This does not excuse Spain. In fact Spain was so awful they deserve to financially support every other Spanish speaking country in the world.

Sounds like a fake story. Missionaries loved making up stories about cannibalism among indigenous peoples of the Americas, since the Church only permitted enslaving cannibals. The Catholic Church was also engaged in cultural genocide in the Americas, and the main justification was that the natives engaged in cannibalism. Finally, no verified account of cannibalism from a reliable witness exists.

There have been some verifiable reports of canibalistic tribes because archaeologists have found bones that had human teeth marks in them and that was how they were able to determine what happened to the body after it died. I’m a documentary aficionado so I have seen quite a lot of them. Admittedly some were just junk, but some were able to prove their case.

There are still a lot of delinquents on that side of the family and a lot of my cousins have been locked up. Something seems to misfire in their brains.

Would it not be reasonable just strip the body, remove identifying features- hands, feet, head, body art. And just leave the body in a unfrequented place where animals can easily access it? By the time it gets found it would be scattered and eaten enough to make it impossible to know how the person died or who they vere. Never tested it of course :)

The training a team of handler/dog go through is intense and long, with regular weekly (or more) trainings and annual recertification. we use dead animals in various states of decomp, food, live persons, heavy equipment and power tools, sirens and jack hammers, up in trees, under rubble, under many feet of water, buried deep (one time 21 ft under a dam) heavy rains and winds. Here’s my (entirely theoretical) plan. Cut up the body to the point of being unrecognisable. Disturb an area (DONT PUT THE BODY THERE) and call in an anonymous tip saying that you saw someone suspiciously digging x at the dead of night. The police will of course go and check it out, then find nothing. Take the bones, brain, and anything else too big to be properly disposed of and then bury it in that area, so that way nobody will be suspicious of the disturbed area and nobody will search the area. With the rest, and this part is gross, you want to turn on the grill. Make it as patty-adjacent as possible, and then intentionally burn them all. If anyone comes over complain that you weren’t paying attention and accidentally burned a whole bunch of patties. Throw them in the fire when someone can see you grumbling about wastefulness. If there is a suspicious amount of ash, gather some of it and put it in an urn labeled ‘grandma’. In two years, find a job and move away from the town.

Look people, let's get this right. You dig a hole, throw in a dead dog, fill it back in, report it anonymously, the police dig it up, find the dog, dig deeper, won't find anything, and fill it back in. THEN, you go back, dig it up, throw in the ACTUAL body, then fill it back in. The police will have no reason to dig it up again. They'll know why the earth's disturbed there. They'll know why the dog's alerting on it. Why do I need to keep explaining all this?

i'll note that. a better strategy (I DON'T KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE I WAS JUST DISCUSSING THIS WITH MY FRIENDS ON A HIKE) is to put an endangered plant over it. we also discussed putting the body in a forest and then burning down said forest. or one could leave them in their house and start a fire with a gas stove or other household appliance.

Apparently such liquid "cremation" is possible as an alternative to cremation. There are bone fragments left but otherwise the end product is a sterile solution that can be released as wastewater. But what about the bathtub? Would it potentially dissolve the tub, depending on the material of the tub? I am reminded of Lisa Left Eye Lopes... she burned her bf's clothes in a marble tub. It was replaced with a vinyl tub. When she tried to repeat the burning of clothes in new bathtub, the whole mansion went up in flames.

This isn't accurate. Fetuses don't "start off" female and then become male if there's a Y chromosome. They all start off neutral, with three organs that can either develop into testes and a penis, or ovaries and a clitoris. They don't start out as ovaries and clitoris *before* turning into testes and penises. If the fetus has an XY, then when hormone development floods the fetus with testosterone, they will become male organs. If the fetus has an XX, and doesn't get flooded with testosterone, they will become female organs.

Not quite correct, the Y chromosome stays inactive till the 4th month of pregnancy - so for those 4 months all humans are technically female. And hormones don't really affect the forming of the organs, the stem cells get the blueprints from the present DNA - with the plan for male genitalia being on the dominant Y chromosome, otherwise the development of a female baby simply continues

Not actually true. Fetuses start out as having no external sexual characteristics, and we cannot visually differentiate between the early stages of sexual organs. Is that a labia or a scrotal sac, a penis or a clitoris? Claiming that "all males start as females" falsely suggests that there is a different set of structural genes for males and females, and that the male genes are not activated until later in the development. Both have the same set of genes for building their bodies. How these work is determined by hormonal secretion, which is determined by the sex genes.

X and Y chromosomes? And yes, the Y chromosome stays inactive till the 4th month of development, that's why most male mammals have nipples as they form before (male rats being the exception)

This again. ONLY sea otters do this, and not all of them. Other species of otters do not. There are several species of otter - it's worth getting your facts straight rather than misleading people. Doesn't make it any nicer when it does happen, but let's get it right. Sea otters - the cute ones who hold paws - have violent mating habits that sometimes get downright criminal. Yes, I say criminal, so my comment doesn't use that word. Other species of otter don't. For example, Asian Short-Clawed Otters form lifelong bonds and raise offspring together, sometimes in extended families. So do Smooth-Coated Otters (like the ones in Singapore). Eurasian otters don't stay together for long once the pups are born but they cooperate to get them there. Yes nature can be f-ing horrible, but I think we owe it to the species we've nearly made extinct to give them a fair description. I hope this helps some of the people in the comments to know that it's not all terrible news about all otters everywhere!

50 Scary Facts That People Shouldn't Know But Do, As Shared By People On This Thread Having an erection for 4+ hours can cause gangrene of the d**k which is when tissue is dead or dying due to lack of blood flow or an infection cause by bacteria. Unfortunately this can happen to men with Sickle Cell Anemia. The Sickle Cells get all hooked together and enough of them will cause a huge clot. So the normal amount of blood that flows through normally can’t flow out because there’s a clot stopping it. Thus priapism. Looked after a gentleman one time in this exact situation. What saved things is a procedure called electrophoresis. Long explanation about how it works, but it did work.

Spotted hyena females have "Psuedopenises". Pretty much both sexes have penises, except the female penis replaces the vagina. This means the urethra must be penetrated by a male in order to mate. The pseudopenis also functions as a birth canal. Pretty painful birth if you ask me. In a study, Female Spotted Hyenas have been seen trying to peg Male Hyenas. Pretty amusing but also disturbing fact. Special thanks to my 8th grade biology teacher for this mental scar of information. Edit: Spotted Hyena females have the pseudopenises, not all Hyenas.

Absolutely untrue. I'm a pathologist-we get the surgical resection specimen after you've had surgery (eg mastectomy for breast cancer, colectomy for colon cancer). After we've processed the bits of tissue that we need to look at to make the diagnosis, the left over tissue goes for incineration. Cancers are human tissue same as the rest of you-they are often firmer, which is why a tumour lump in the fatty tissue of the breast can be felt, but that's because they are quite fibrosis. All cancers will burn, even bone tumours. We send amputated limbs for incineration, and tumours are not as solid as your femur or tibia.

Had a school presentation of this, cause it fascinates me while simultaneously horrifies me. The movie The Rock got me interested in finding out how much of it was true. The VX-nerve agent kills in a brutally painful way. When you tell a muscle to contract, you send out a chemical (ACh) in said muscle causing it to contract. When you no longer want to tense it, you send out a new chemical (AChE) neutralising the first chemical. The VX-nerve agent prevents this new substance (AChE) from being used to neutralise the first substance (ACh). In the movie they mention you get spasms strong enough to break your own back, which I don't know if it's true or not, but you will begin involuntarily tense every single muscle in your body (including the diaphragm muscle) with so much force it can tear it's own muscle attachment until you eventually die because you can't exhale. If you spray mere millilitres of this substance on a door handle, the next person to grab the door handle will die. It was used to assassinate Kim Jong Un's brother Kim Jong Nam, by spraying him in the face with this substance in a regular water spray container. I believe the ones who did this also died from the very minuscule amounts that landed on them as well.

To scare you still more, VX nerve agent, other nerve agents such as Sarin, the poison eserine, organophosphate pesticides and insecticides, and at least three anti-dementia medicines all work the same way. They are all acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. The difference is the strength.

The way spindle poison toxicity works is pretty creepy too. A simplified explanation of mitosis is that the dna forms into chromosomes which are then doubled and pulled apart by spindle fibers, then the cell divides into two with each having a set of dna. Spindle poison prevents spindle fibers form forming so mitosis is interrupted halfway through. Cells keep dying, but can't be replaced until the animal just dies from not having enough healthy cells. It's actually used with varying success to prevent cancer growth, but it can be really dangerous, especially in large amounts.

Actually, the women who were recruited to do this execution of Kim were told to put the chemical on their hands and rub his face like a funny kind of greeting or teasing. Then, they rushed off to wash their hands because they were hurting, and he started to die.

All organic phosphates work this way. The most common antidote is atropine, which is extracted from nightshade. Atropine poisons you by blocking ACh receptors on nerve endings.

Or, have a side hobby of breeding and racing homing pigeons. With this option you end up with- 1: A plausible pretense of why you are travelling in the first place (preferably timed with homing/racing pigeon events). 2: A vehicle filled with birds, and their droppings (minimising the chance of using a drug dog for detection). 3: If properly constructed, each cage can have a false bottom for storing your illicit substances during the journey (rendering a vehicle search pointless if the birds/cages are removed for the dog). 4: Prior to any checkpoint the birds can be fitted with their pigeon "racing vests", which will be holding all of your contraband. - If it seems like you're going to get into strife, you "accidentally" press the lock button for the electronically operated drop down side panel. Releasing all of your pigeons and illicit substances into the skies, only for them both to return home to you. - - - Yes my suggestion is far more convoluted, but it has its perks.

Rainwater sometimes leaks into graves (especially in Ireland) where most of the decedents were Catholic, and thus as per tradition embalmed before burial. The groundwater fills the graves and coffins so much that the remains disintegrate and leak embalming fluid which contains many carcinogens into the groundwater. Local residents actually end up drinking bits of dead people through the tap water consumed. Fun fact👍🏻

Modern grave yards use something called a "grave liner" which is essentially a cement box you put in the hole first. then you put in the casket. Not only does it prevent leaks but it stabilizes the hole, preventing the earth over the top from changing shape and making it easier to maintain the ground. Or we could just stop embalming everyone and go back to the old ways.

A male bees penis explodes audibly after sex. Not sure where I heard it but it's been over a decade and I haven't forgotten yet. Edit: of course my most upvoted comment is about an exploding bee penis. Someone else replied with an actual explanation but for anyone else who sees this, here you go. "The drone endophallus is designed to disperse a large quantity of seminal fluid and spermatozoa with great speed and force. The endophallus is held internally in the drone. During mating, the organ is everted (turned inside out), into the queen. The eversion of the endophallus is achieved by contracting abdominal muscles, which increases hemolymph pressure, effectively "inflating" the endophallus. Cornua claspers at the base of the endophallus help to grip the queen. Mating between a single drone and the queen lasts less than 5 seconds, and it is often completed within 1–2 seconds. Mating occurs mid-flight, and 10–40 m above ground. Since the queen mates with 5–19 drones, and drones die after mating, each drone must make the most of his single shot. The drone makes first contact from above the queen, his thorax above her abdomen, straddling her. He then grasps her with all six legs, and everts the endophallus into her opened sting chamber. If the queen’s sting chamber is not fully opened, mating is unsuccessful, so some males that mount the queen do not transfer semen. Once the endophallus has been everted, the drone is paralyzed, flipping backwards as he ejaculates. The process of ejaculation is explosive—semen is blasted through the queen’s sting chamber and into the oviduct. The process is sometimes audible to the human ear, akin to a "popping" sound. The ejaculation is so powerful that it ruptures the endophallus, disconnecting the drone from the queen. The bulb of the endophallus is broken off inside of the queen during mating—so drones mate only once, and die shortly after. The leftover endophallus remaining in the queen’s vagina is referred to as the “mating sign”. The plug will not prevent the next drone from mating with the same queen, but may prevent semen from flowing out of the vagina." source: wiki which sources a Harvard study about bees.

The males are allowed some of the time, but when preparing for winter, they are seen as a draw on resources. Their only job is to eat food and mate with queens they find outside the hive. When it gets cold out, food needs to support the hive all winter and queens store sperm a long time. The males are no longer useful. Females will forcibly drag them out of the hive and fight them at the door like bouncers. Saw a youtube video where the poor male was obviously confused they were not letting him back in

It can cause cellulitis, joint inflammation, and swelling of the **bone marrow**. Fun fact, we still don't know why the f**k this happens, though since it can be treated with antibiotics, it's prob a bacteria of some kind.

I used to work in a harbour that had a couple of resident seals, the fishermen would throw "broken" fish that wouldnt sell at market into the sea when coming in to land, because of this the seals were aparently very friendly. There were signs everywhere warning people not to try and stroke the seals as they were likely to get bitten but you can almost guarantee that there would be numerous cases of people being bitten over the summers

Daddy long legs (or harvestmen) are not true spiders. They are in the arachnid family, but are more closely related to scorpions. Also they only have two eyes and are harmless not because they can’t break skin- but because they don’t have fangs or venom at all!

There will be no connected nerves to communicate pain and given we experience emotion throughout our torso, think sick feeling in stomach and trembling, you won't feel anything much about the event either.

People are slowly dying in hospice so I could see some organs failing in the 24-36 hour window before death. Corpses can come from anyone including healthy people. From my experience death smells sweet when you get a faint wiff, its unbearable if its been a day or two since they passed.

As a hospice nurse- No. It’s an earthy smell. The pungent smell is likely a wound, an unclean bottom, or unclean mouth. All of which should be cared for even when dying. Also don’t force the dying to eat if they don’t want to as the food sits in their upper digestion. No absorption or mobilization occurs when the body is shutting down.

In the 1700’s (maybe a bit earlier), people would take the scabs of small pox victims, cut open their wrists, and sew the scabs into themselves to inoculate against the virus. It actually was highly effective and one of the main reasons America won the revolutionary war. But other people’s scabs sewn into your own skin? Kinda f****d up…

It was English doctor John Fewster in 1768 who realised that prior infection with cowpox made you immune to smallpox. Various English and German investigators tested it out over the next few years, but Edward Jenner's work popularised the procedure.

It was cowpox, not smallpox. They were aware having had cowpox (a much milder and non-lethal disease) seemed to make you immune to the very much lethal smallpox. The easiest way to ensure a person got cowpox good and proper way to take a cowpox scab and stick it in a cut. Smallpox scabs would work, but would give you smallpox. Which is a bad thing. It was the start of immunisations.

While I understand the sentiment, substance use is nasty stuff that can destroy not just the person using, but those closest to them. Substance use, whether drugs or alcohol, often plays a huge part in child abuse and domestic violence. Some drugs are even known to make molestation more likely due to causing hyper sexuality. Saying substance use is nasty stuff is simply a statement of fact for everyone touched by it

As gross as it sounds, I can understand it. Cottage cheese with cut up tomatoes is actually quite delicious, as is cottage cheese with fruit. Ketchup has both tomatoes, and, typically, some amount of sugar, so it stands to reason that this would taste delicious to some. It just sounds gross because our brains don't want to process the why of it all. A lot of people like scrambled eggs with ketchup too, for similar reasons. While others don't mind egg with tomato, but would never dream of egg with ketchup.

I remember Nixon saying this during an interview. Nixon said that he ate so much high-calorie food at banquets and official dinners that he feared putting on weight. So when having just a regular meal he's have cottage cheese, which he'd flavor with ketchup.

According to the studies it might take 10-15 sec's for brain to consume all oxygen left in blood stream that is if you are lucky (not in stress or actively fighting for your life which pumps you up with adrenaline), but for brain i question these second will feel like eternity...

Kitty guided bomb ! During World War II, the US wanted to improve the Air Force’s targeting of enemy battleships. Solution? Strap a cat to a bomb. They thought that cats hated water so much that, if you dropped a kitty bomb over the ocean they would steer the bomb toward the battleship’s deck in order to avoid getting wet. Testing proved it doesn’t work because the poor kittens pass out when thrown out a plane strapped to a bomb.

They also had missiles with a pigeon as the guidance system. Pigeon was trained to peck in the direction of boat shapes, which triggered a steering mechanism. While apparently they worked, the long training period and only getting one shot per pigeon meant they were never produced in volume.

As someone who had 5-10 nickel sized holes in his lung, and a chest cavity full of air compressing his lung to complete collapse, I'm not buying this. You may say that I retained the ability to scream because my chest wasn't punctured, but when they inserted the chest tube, to relieve the pressure on my lung, I definitely screamed, as they jammed an 18 inch long, pointed tube, through the muscle tissue and between my ribs. Incidentally, when they do that, it sounds like you pulled a nail out of a tire in the rain. And though you can scream with hole(s) in your lung, you cannot sneeze, because you can't take a deep enough breath to do so.

As mentioned by Norm (paradoxical undressing) the extremely low body temperature can lead some people to feel hot when they're actually on the verge of death, so they may remove clothing. Bodies found the next day were sometimes assumed to be victims of sexual assault because of this.

Lye will eventually dissolve larger chunks of flesh and bone far better than acid will, as long as you don't mind neutralizing and disposing of the unrecognizable sludge and crumbly bone shadows afterward. For small chunks of flesh, piranha solution (a sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide mix) will literally evaporate any hydrocarbon into CO2 relatively quickly, so it's good for removing small amounts of evidence, like a finger or an eyeball. Edit: Corrected grammar.

I need to correct the OP a bit. Lye (alkali) dissolves the flesh leaving the bones intact as a skeleton. Acid dissolves the bones leaving the flesh intact as a mummy. Peroxide I don't know, but if peroxide dissolves flesh and acid dissolves bone then "piranha solution" may be the solution.

How ridiculously easy it is to make chemicals that go boom, they would be so unstable that they will probably go off from improper handling in an untrained environment but you can absolutely make it from household materials including making non-organic explosives (non organic explosives weren't even tested for before mid 2010's since the machines have to calibrated separately)

If you pay attention in high school chemistry class making things go boom is very very easy. one valence electron here, another over there and I'm going to stop explaining.

Any finely divided particles are naturally explosive if oxygen, confinement, and an ignition source is provided. Grain, flour, hay dust are just a few examples...

The only two ways I know to make chemicals that go boom are ANFO from fertilizer and diesel. And nitrocotton from nitric acid and cotton. ANFO requires a detonator to set it off, which isn't all that easy. Nitrocotton, drying a teatowel that's been used to mop up nitric acid in front of a fire, could start you looking for a new house. I really don't know about others like picric acid and nitrogen iodide.

napalm = gasoline + powdered detergent (not boom but quite the fire display) phosphene gas = bleach + ammonia Chlorine gas = bleach +vinegar just to name a few more deadly that an explosion

Depending on the ratio Bleach + Acid can also create Hydrazine - a self igniting liquid, used as rocket fuel by space agencies

I was baking today and wanted to do more but ran out of eggs. How much blood is two eggs worth?

I think I would try aqua faba or linseed/flaxseed meal before resorting to blood, but it's a personal choice I guess :)

Dead skin flakes can be used as replacement for flour, too
