We all know the famous saying how the practice makes perfect, or in other words - there‘s a chance you‘ll get so much better at something if you keep doing it every day in order to improve.
An illustrator Lorna Kelleher wanted to check if this saying is actually true. Recently, she decided to measure her progress by recreating some of her older artworks. For this she chose illustrations of Disney princesses that she drew two years ago and remade them in a way she draws today. When you put them side to side, there‘s clearly a difference – which ones do you like better?

Pocahontas
Love the growth on this one. From cartoon to reality. Well done!
idk.. all of 2016 seems better for me.. i would even say 2018 looks like earlier works rather other way around.
They may look better to you but try not to be rude about it cause she worked really hard to do all of these.
Load More Replies...To me, the 2018 drawing looks like the 2016 drawing aged 4 or 5 years. I do prefer the 2018 better myself, but I can tell that she put so much work into both of them. Considering how it looks when I draw anything, I can tell she has so much talent!!
You can see the progress made. flow of the hair, depth of the skin tone, and the folds in clothing. and while they all look great for realistic versions of the characters I've seen people here preferring the cartoon ones as they speak more to the character themselves. Great work on improving. Keep it up.
Mulan
Guys, chill. It's an extra o. You knew exactly what I meant.
Load More Replies...I'm out of the loop, and don't watch Disney, so I don't know how the characters are supposed to look. I prefer the earlier pic, but both look good. They just look like two different people, rather than two drawings of the same person.
Why is everyone picking a favorite? Why can't u like both of them? And pointing out every detail that you think are bad is stupid cause the fact is you wouldn't be able to draw something like this.
It's not necessarily that people are picking favorites, it's just something that they like or don't like. At least that's how it is for me. And truer words have never been spoken about my ability to draw anything, let alone anything as amazing as what she's drawn!! Also, I haven't read each comment super closely, but the ones for Pocahontas, I think they were critiquing rather than pointing out what they think is bad.
Load More Replies...No it isn't. That doesn't even remotely look like Mulan. That looks more like Jasmine.
Load More Replies...Ariel
she changed her style a lot, but I don't think that one is better than the other
These later drawings may not be done using the same medium. For some of her work, she is using Speedpaint software with an Wacom Intuos drawing pad for input. I've looked into those for myself and the lower end drawing pads do not have the sensitivity of the more expensive ones. She may not be able to get the precision and variance that she normally would with freehand airbrushed acrylic. Personally, I prefer her other work altogether, but then when it comes to art, I lean toward naturalism.
Load More Replies...For many of these, I like the 2018 version better. For this one, I prefer the 2016, and I'm seeing a lot of the same sentiment in the comments. I think it comes down to the fact that 2016 Ariel's expression is so alive and the colours are brighter. In fact, both seem to be true of most of these, but this one exemplifies the differences - and depending on which character we're looking at, the effect of "more alive" changes. I can see a lot of places where the artist has improved, but I wonder if she spent a little less time on these the second time around? Or is it partially an effort to make them "realer" and less like their cartoon models?
Rapunzel
It doesn't need to look like the original. That's the point of looking at style differences.
Load More Replies..."Real one"? There IS no real Rapunzel. I prefer 2018, is a girl who has a skillet to flatten you!
I feel like all she did was stop using eyeliner on the bottom lash line and add contour makeup for every one haha
Belle
If you're going to comment on other peoples creativity at least learn the names of the characters.
Load More Replies...I like that this one shows the artist's own style developing. The 2016 one looks just like Disney Belle with more detail, but the one in 2018 has a completely different look and personality.
2018 is her embracing her style, not copying the characters looks exactly. News flash, it's OKAY to have a style that differs.
Load More Replies...Yeah she worked hard on BOTH OF THEM so at least acknowledge that
Load More Replies...Snow White
i dont like either..both dont have the princess's personality shining through
Although this artist is very talented, I prefer the the original from, what, the 1940s?
Aurora
the later ones may be better drawings, but the earlier ones are true animations
well... actually on all of her drawings, she seems to have lost the innocence, both 2016 and 2018 are wonderful on there own ways, but for this subject i prefer her old ones
This is not meant to put anyone down, just to point out different personality types. People who are less adventurous will most likely go for the 2016 drawing because it's what is more familiar. The more adventurous will probably prefer the 2018 drawings because they look so much less like the original Disney characters. Either was, they're both awesome!!
I think they all looked better before she took her Human Anatomy course. Cartoons should really have a personality of their own, and not be locked into the rules of the real world. Just watch any cartoon from the 1990s. They are fun and free. Just don't look at the Teen Titans Go series. That ruined animation forever.
Jasmine
Because that ain't even Yasmine in the first place.
Load More Replies...Jasmine? Naaaa! It's Esmeralda, from the Hunchback of Notre Dame!
Beautiful! Don't listen to all the haters, they're kinda dumb for not recognizing your talent!!! I'm so proud of your progress! Fantastic.
Cinderella
Wow I bet you made this artist feel just great hun! So encouraging. HMU if you can do better!
Load More Replies...Without reading the title, I thought she was either the stepmother/stepsister. Way too much blush on both of them.
Yeah but its not really your place to say is it?
Load More Replies...In 2016 each was unique. In 2018 all look like clones with different hair
It`s not the progress - it`s regress. Earlier drawings MUCH better.
No, they're not. If she stuck with that style she'd be one of hundreds of artists not embracing their unique style. It doesn't have to look like the original, that's the point. *Eyeroll*
Load More Replies...Am I the only one who thinks that Cinderella looks older in the 2018 drawing?
I honestly like all of your drawings, Even if some don´t look all the same, at least they look beautiful!
All I can say is that her style changed. But is is now better than it was in 2016? It's debatable. To me the 2016 style is prettier...
I agree. All I see is a style change, not really an improvement in skills (the skills were already excellent in 2016). The earlier ones are very similar to the Disney originals, whereas the newer ones are different versions of these characters in the artist's particular style.
Load More Replies...I'd say it's more a difference in style than a straight-up improvement. I would also query whether she's using the same materials and equipment now as then. TL;DR: I like them both, I think she was good then and is still good ^_^
I agree! She is just as good both ways, but I just think she changed her style...
Load More Replies...In most cases, I actually like the left one more. Pocahontas being an exception
In the drawings from 2018, I can't tell who the characters are, unlike the drawings from 2016 where it is very clear. The drawings from 2018 may have a more personal style and may be better technically, but that I know nothing of.
Load More Replies...I don't find this an improvement - they don't look like the Disney characters anymore, it's just a change of style which, to me, lost the Disney "feel". LEft ones are way prettier to me too. Had I not seen the left one, I'd be speculating which Disney (if at all) toon I looked at in 2018.
Because they ALL have to look like true Disney, because apparently people think it's a crime for people to actually EMBRACE their amazing and unique art styles.
Load More Replies...That is an excellent way of putting it! The newer ones have a drag queen-ish feel.
Load More Replies...I'd like to see some of the artists work using original characters. There seems to be a lot of postings of various people's interpretations of Disney females. And that's just counting posts on Bored Panda. (A quick search found me at least 50). I don't understand the obsession.
Yes, exactly. I like all the comments about “it’s her own style” etc... then draw your own characters, full stop.
Load More Replies...Both versions are great. As mentioned earlier - it's different style, not better drawing. And I prefer 2016 version.
