Russian Fisherman Is Back With 51+ More Terrifying Creatures From The Deep Sea (This List Might Be Too Scary For Sensitive People)
Roman Fedortsov (previously here) spends most of his time on fishing trawlers. Some of his catches, however, end up going viral on the internet instead of being quietly digested in someone's tummy.
"I'm 39 and have been working onboard trawlers for seventeen years," Roman told Bored Panda. "I live in Murmansk, Russia. It is a big port, and that's why I enrolled in the Marine University after school. My specialization has a lot to do with fishing technology. I know how to prepare fish for freezing and further delivery to the customer."
Roman brought most of these photos from the Norwegian and Barents seas while some of them came ashore from the Atlantic Ocean.
Once on a fishing trip, Roman and his mates live in six-hour cycles. They work for six hours, then rest for another six. And repeat. "We are to catch commercial fish such as Cod, Haddock, Halibut, Redfish, Herring, Mackerel, and so on," he added. "The most extreme fish I have ever caught are Frilled Shark, Rabbitfish, Big Sunfish, Angler, Stoplight Loosejaw..."
"During my watch, I work at the fish factory. I'm responsible for processing the fish, so I have to control other seamen while they're working, too."
Roman really likes finding unusual types of animals aboard the trawl. "I decided to create social media accounts because many people have no idea how some of the fish look. I'm constantly impressed by the appearance of some deep water fish and want to share my experiences with other people."
"I have never been scared of the fish I catch," he said. "I'm always interested and impressed."
Scroll down to check out the terrifying creatures Roman has grown so fond of!

"I'm So Ugly, But That's Okay"
They only look like that when you bring them up to the surface. In their natural habitat the pressure holds their bodies together.
Weird, almost like we shouldn't be taking them out of the sea...
Load More Replies...When i Googled blobfish (thats what it is if you didn't already know) and i had to google blobfish swimming because none at all were under water. Sad that i had to google the swimming part. I figured if i typed in the species they would be swimming nope we take fish out of the water air dround them and take stupid photos. We're a disturbing species
So true... I researched it and found out we are the only species to take perverted pictures of other/same species!

"Looks Like Cartoon Dragon. No Photoshop"
Seriously!! This looks like something from outer space!
Load More Replies...Looks like that fishe's eyes reflect loads of light, like a cat's eyes - with cats this makes the light pass the optical nerves twice and enhances their sight in poor light. And since deep under water light is also poor... Also note the huuuuuuge pupils! :D
....in your soul. don't stare...sometimes the abyss stares back....

That's not a cyclops, that's just an Atlantic Halibut seen edge on. Like all flatfish, it swims on it's side near the ocean floor and are asymmetrical, with both eyes lying on the same side of the head - in this case one of the eyes is almost in line with the spine.
Wow! I believe the to top eye is a very primitive and can only see light and dark. Anyone know what type of soak this is?
It's Beautiful
This is just a puffer fish that has been dried out in the sun and therefore his skin has been pulled back revealing his teeth more. They are really harmless. They eat coral so they have those crazy teeth.
The poison in one pufferfish is enough to wipe out 30 humans, and there's no known antidote. Yet, many people eat it. Called fugu in Japan, the meat of the pufferfish is a highly prized dish that is prepared by specially trained, licensed chefs. Wikipedia
Load More Replies...That's it, I'm not going in the sea again. Those teeth couple lop off anything.
At my dentist there is a fish tank that has a fish with teeth in it.
Load More Replies..."Total Recall. Sea Edition"
It's from bringing a deep sea fish up to fast when fishing, the pressure causes this to happen.
Load More Replies..."The Beauty From The Sea Bottom"
I thought this was a basket star or basket fish or basket coral or something along those lines.
Load More Replies...I'm guessing that this creature has retracted its arms/tentacles in reaction to being removed from the water. I imagine it would look much different in its home environment.
It's called a basket star - and it's supposed to look like that. No radiation-induced mutations involved.

They look rather so-fish-ticated with their mustaches. (i'm sorry)
I am saddened that these creatures are not returned to the sea. No wait...let me allow it to die so that I can get a selfish photo. Not right!
We need to do research. And these fish can not just be 'put back'' due to pressure difference. If you pull them up, they will not survive on the surface. That's why we do not dig up a whole lot of these beautiful fish
Load More Replies...I have a question. If they are deep sea why are we humans taking them out onto the surface for photography purpoes. I know they are interesting but isn't it better to leave them be?
Yes. But we have to take some out so we can do research on them.

I think they nibble away things like a parrot fish similar to that from the look of his mouth I've seen little baby ones and their mouths kind of look like that usually if they're a cleaner fish like a remora there's a little suction cup thing on the top of their head and they're flat I think this one's a nibbler for sure it could be wrong but I think so and you're not dumb......not at all...😊😊😊🪼🪼🪼

"Zoom Photo. Look In Those Sad Eyes"
Sure they will look sad!! You've pulled them out of the f*****g water!!! They're dying
Umm.... they embolized long before this picture was taken unfortunately... And I'm sure all these creatures look vastly different in their natural habitat ..... The reason they look so strange and alien and bizarre and disfigured is because thehave been removed from a great deal of pressure into our environment so all of their insides have been forced out of them so they've kind of exploded from the inside out.... It's best not to think about i it's pretty f****** horrifying I'm a diver for years and the thought of death by depressurization is absolutely horrifying a terrible way to die there were some people working on an oil rig or underwater gas rig and they went into a chamber and the man operating the other end of the chamber had not closed the door completely so when they went in there and gave the okay it wasn't okay and these three men were ripped apart instantly I saw pictures of it they're just piles of flesh it was absolutely horrifying sadly ALL fish here are dead

Load More Replies...The fish has parasite. Cymothoa exigua, or the tongue-eating louse, is a parasitic isopod of the family Cymothoidae. This parasite enters fish through the gills, and then attaches itself to the fish's tongue. The female attaches to the tongue and the male attaches on the gill arches beneath and behind the female.C. exigua extracts blood through the claws on its front, causing the tongue to atrophy from lack of blood. The parasite then replaces the fish's tongue by attaching its own body to the muscles of the tongue stub. It appears that the parasite does not cause much other damage to the host fish, but it has been reported by Lanzing and O'Connor (1975) that infested fish with two or more of the parasites are usually underweight. Once C. exigua replaces the tongue, some feed on the host's blood and many others feed on fish mucus. This is the only known case of a parasite assumed to be functionally replacing a host organ. When a host

Look I get all these posts about the poor animals and the cruelty however remember there are two sides to every story. Firstly educational purposes I feel much more informed and some inspiration to look after the ocean more to protect these beautiful animals. Secondly, do you eat meat? fish? use anything from rainforests, any products like palm oil? dairy? it is impossible not to. And even vegans have to get their protein from somewhere which is usually places farmed on deforested soil and done by poorly paid workers. Thirdly these animals could simply have been too curious and Finally if they had been doing this in large numbers that would have been wrong but they were only finding small amounts from 1 to maybe 4 of each animal. and imagine the research on the animals we could find cures to cancer etc.
Load More Replies...They are not scary. They are just sad living creatures dying out of their natural environment. Just let them go!
by the time they get them out of the rest of the catch they are probably dead anyway

Exactly. A lot of ppl fail hard at understanding that.

Load More Replies...Yeah, they are not supposed to see the sun because they LIVE DEEP DOWN IN THE OCEAN. So why the f**k are they being dragged out of the water like this? Morons.
How about just leaving them in the water to be the animals they are?. Disgraceful photos, hey look what we kill in the process of killing other things, aren't we big and clever. F*** off.
I think it's interesting, but I would have liked to see what the name of the animals were too.
Horrible is that person who takes that creatures out of its habitat just for fun or showing off. Shame on certain humans.

Load More Replies...How do they catch these fish by accident if they're looking to catch commercial fish? I also wonder what they do with the fish afterwards..... well, if they look like that I guess they're already dead, but I hope they're being used for research at least, because that seems like a waste and honestly sad.
Exactly my thought. There is no way these are bycatch because most of these live too deep under the ocean. It is very interesting to see more of the deep sea, since it's still so unexplored, but I wished these poor fish wouldn't have to die for this.
Load More Replies...The thing to take away from this though, is that all of these creatures are just "bycatch"- that is, we killed them just because it's much easier to just throw in a big net and catch everything than it it for us to be selective and ONLY catch the fish we actually plan to eat. Because, hey, who cares about fish becoming scarce? Not our problem, since we'll be dead anyway by the time that happens, amirite? As long as we get that tuna salad today, who cares about the future... :/
