Stepmom Goes Out Of Her Way To Inconvenience Bedbound Teen, Bio Mom Gets Her Out Of There

Teenagers can be quite particular about their preferences. As they develop their personalities, these quirks often become cherished traits. Which brings us to our teen of the day, Kelly.

Unlike most teens who might obsess over the latest fashion trends or a coveted pair of sneakers, Kelly’s passion lies in a seemingly mundane detail – her tea. However, when surgery limits her ability to do this herself, things get interesting.

Things went south when the stepmom failed to get the teen’s tea right

The author’s teen daughter Kelly is recovering at home after a recent surgery. The situation took a turn when her stepmother, Lily, disregarded Kelly’s dietary restrictions during her stay at her father’s house.

According to the Original Poster (OP), the initial plan involved Kelly recuperating at her father Josh’s residence. Josh, recently remarried to Lily, proposed this due to the larger space and Lily’s availability to assist Kelly while he’s at work. The poster, unable to take extended leave due to work commitments and ongoing medical bills, reluctantly agreed.

However, after a week, Kelly returned to her mother’s care. The OP claims that Lily repeatedly disregarded Kelly’s specific dietary needs, particularly regarding hot beverages. Kelly, known for her passion for cooking and particular preferences, requested drinks prepared according to her limitations. Lily responded by serving unsuitable drinks, like coffee, which conflicted with Kelly’s medication, and dismissed attempts to address the issue by suggesting Kelly prepare her own drinks despite her current physical state.

Following this incident, the OP brought Kelly home and has since demanded compensation from Josh for medical expenses and additional costs incurred due to the situation. She maintains a firm stance against allowing Kelly to return to Josh’s house until the situation is addressed. This decision has reportedly caused friction within the family, with Josh and his in-laws labeling the girl’s mother “unreasonable.”

Teenagers often develop strong preferences, a normal part of their identity exploration. They may experiment with styles, activities, and even specific food and drink routines. In Kelly’s case, her love for cooking extends to her tea preferences. This seemingly small detail holds significance for her, reflecting her desire for control and self-expression. It’s not about being picky, but about asserting her choices.

This desire for control becomes even more important during recovery from surgery. When someone is feeling vulnerable and dependent, small acts of self-determination can be empowering.  However, this doesn’t negate the responsibility of the caregiver.

According to Life and Progress, taking responsibility means acknowledging and accepting the consequences of your actions, both positive and negative. It involves honesty about your role in a situation. This builds trust and respect.

Taking full responsibility goes beyond simply agreeing to a task. It means truly understanding the commitment and seeing it through with care. When caring for someone recovering from surgery, half-hearted efforts can be dangerous. By fully owning a responsibility, we prioritize the task, pay close attention to details, and actively address challenges. This ensures the best outcome and respects the trust placed in us.

In this case, recovering from surgery requires following specific instructions to the letter. This includes dietary restrictions and timely assistance with basic needs.  For example, Kelly reportedly waited a significant amount of time for help using the restroom, highlighting a lapse in care beyond just the dietary issues. Disregarding these instructions goes against the responsibility Lily took on. If she couldn’t manage Kelly’s needs, she should have communicated openly with the poster or Josh. This could have led to finding a better solution, rather than prioritizing convenience and dismissing Kelly’s concerns.

Furthermore, the author’s work commitments limit her ability to be Kelly’s full-time caregiver. Josh initially offered a solution with a larger space and someone to assist, fulfilling his responsibility to help his daughter recover. However, Lily’s actions rendered their home unsuitable due to her failure to take full responsibility. Now, the OP faces increased financial strain. Requesting financial support from Josh to ensure Kelly’s well-being during recovery is a perfectly reasonable response.

So, was the poster overreacting, or was her response justified? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments!

Well, the comment section was heavily divided on the situation with many demanding more information on the tea

“ YTA - sounds like your daughter is a little princess”. I mean, a teenager who has to p**s the bed after surgery because their stepmother can’t bothered to help them go to the bathroom, as agreed, would maybe be the bad guy in this situation. But I’ve never been a teenage girl who had to p**s the bed, so what do I know?

I think the reasoning is that OP only bright that up in comments. The original complaint was about not making the tea right, which does sound a little princessy. I think bringing coffee when it's contraindicated and the "you can make it yourself" comment from stepmom are enough to make her an a-hole, though. It's weird that the not helping her to the bathroom thing was an afterthought.

NTA. Don't care how old the patient is; don't care what the surgery was: ANYONE recovering from surgery deserves to have their bloody tea EXACTLY how they asked for it. Messing that up; is messed up. And what the hay is with all the commenters going off on tangents brilliantly suggesting x or y MIGHT not be true... because because! Messed up. Girl in bed, can't use legs - give her her bloody tea. Geez.

Yeah this whole thing is weird. The kid likes plain tea, SM had to go out of her way to make it the way the kid doesn't like it. Sounds like she was trying to drive her out.

I think the step mum didn't actually want to look after her and is either deliberately trying to make her move out or cant really be bothered to help
