When designing a product, designers aim to make it functional and, if possible, visually appealing as well. But, let’s be real, that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes it feels like they just run with the first idea that pops into their head—whether it works or not!

Today, we’ve rounded up some truly awful designs from the internet to show you that just because something can be made, doesn’t mean it should be. These design fails are so bad, they even seem dangerous. Keep scrolling and prepare to cringe, Pandas!

Whoever dreamed up the touch screen interface needs to be flogged repeatedly. Whoever thought these things should entirely replace all buttons and dials should be shot.

Now, I can see voice controls with the buttons as backup, because neither of those require you to take your eyes off the road (once you memorize where the buttons are, and as long as they’re big enough and not too close together). But the screen is b******t, especially for drivers with glasses, specifically bifocals. It takes a couple seconds to focus and see the damned screen, and those couple seconds could be just enough to drift into another lane or miss a curve or object in the road. Oh, and god forbid you don’t touch the screen exactly right, or you’ll end up hitting a completely wrong command. No, I prefer low tech buttons and dials, thank you.

I love my old truck with all its knobs, dials, buttons, switches... I can do everything by feel. I could be offered a modern car for free and I still wouldn't take it! I was recently in a new car a friend got; she was just staring at this screen the size of my laptop, blazing along, poking at the screen... I am not a religious person but I found myself praying to ~something~!!! she almost ran a red light a couple times. And so concluded the first and last time I rode in her car.

Or when you’re approaching a curve where there are parked cars. “BRAKE!!” You stupid car, I’m driving with the curve, I’m not gonna drive into those cars. Sheesh… 🙄

Same with me using the “safe driving app” to get a freaking discount on my car insurance… I want a bumper sticker that warns other drivers behind me , like “ please excuse my annoyingly slow driving … I’m broke and just trying to get whatever discount on my car insurance that I possibly can”… I didn’t even drive badly/ speed or do stupid distracting things before using the dang thing.. but now I’m constantly trying to check to be sure I didn’t accidentally go over the speed limit by +6 mph or having to barely give the gas even up gangster inclines, bc oh no/ I’ll get docked 4 acceleration, or not braking beyond the softest of application that it’s put me at risk more now than I ever was prior .. ugh. Sorry … ranting about my stupid safe driving discount 😂

Wouldn't say a "terrible design" because it probably stops 99.5% of the folks just trying to get into the building without being buzzed in. Perhaps the company who paid for the gate didn't want the vertical bar look of a jail cell door or a 45 degree angle because it does cost more to make. This one shouldn't be high on the list in my opinion.

In today’s competitive market, having a great product design can be quite beneficial for brands. With so many options available in the market, a well-designed product can help set a brand apart from the competition.

Imagine a washing cleaner for utensils that not only comes with better cleaning power but also features an ergonomic design that makes it easy to grip and maneuver. Or this product might incorporate eco-friendly ingredients, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers.

In a crowded market, such thoughtful design can make all the difference, turning a simple cleaning product into a must-have kitchen essential.

That's what happens when you overload tech with unnecessary features. I don't need the net on my fridge, and neither does anyone else, ever. BS like these things will cause more planned obsolescence and waste.

    Tabitha

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Every time some new tech comes out, manufacturers all jump on the bandwagon trying to find ways to apply it to their items. Cars don’t need touchscreens if texting and distracted driving is illegal and dangerous. Refrigerators don’t need to text you to tell you you’re out of milk, you will know that when you open them to put milk on your cereal and there isn’t any. While I will say it’s nice to be able to turn a light on using your phone before you enter a room or the house, that’s about the extent of smart technology I want at home. I don’t want to be SOL if the power—-or internet—-goes out and I can’t use anything in my house; my heat or A/C, my TV, my fridge, my washer/dryer, you name it. Sometimes low tech is better.

Amen … agreed !! I it’s all to just run with this C**p so businesses can keep up with the very technology that’s killing their business to begin with, so typical people can keep up with every stupid trend, so people will become more dependent on these things and more desensitized to either what’s in some cases , really behind a lot of them or to what can and will eventually be used to further remove peoples rights, security & privacy, as these devices more and more remove any of those things and the more people are using these modern “ conveniences “ promoted to make their lives easier, the more they’re being tracked and surveilled surreptitiously & eventually ppl can’t buy & sell goods/eat/receive medical care w/out being constantly tracked & made to use these devices that aren’t going to be for their convenience/2 make life easier , but to monitor everything they do & control every aspect of what they do.. and we’re just doing nothing but allowing that advancement .

You rent it through an app, and you use the app to lock/unlock the car. I assume this is a security feature to prevent theft or something, but clearly not thought through. Parking garages often have no service, imagine having one of these shut down in the middle of a ramp and blocking everyone!

This is where technology and modernity just really annoy me …. Who on earth would make a dang car be required to have cell service/ data in order for it to run?!!!! What the mess ?!! Lord have mercy …. Have those people never traveled anywhere? It’s pretty common to have a phone drop signal where service isn’t available… Plus why does everyone HAVE TO HAVE A CELL PHONE / computer in order to do things? I’m sick of everything being online.sick of it&ppl wonder why it’s hard to find jobs&why the economy suffers when the worlds gone to computers doing all the things ppl once did not too long ago.Now we have a bunch of apathetic/ incompetent ppl who’ve grown up only exposed to social media & smart phones , etc.& they can’t handle life/ social situations/ communication/relationships bc they’re not being given a foundation of things needed to function!theyre not accountable for anything&not growing cognitively to make judgment calls,bc computers think for them. It’s not by accident either…

It might seem obvious, but the first thing a good product needs is solid functionality. It should do what it’s meant to do. For instance, consider a blender. Its primary function is to mix and puree ingredients so that you can make smoothies, soups, or sauces. A high-quality blender should effortlessly blend things into a smooth consistency, without leaving chunks behind.

If the blender has a great design and comes in a variety of colors but fails to perform this basic task, then it’s not fulfilling its purpose. Regardless of how sleek or stylish it looks, people might hesitate to purchase it if it doesn't deliver on its promises.

Functionality is more than just getting the job done—it’s about doing it efficiently and easily. If a product is hard to use or overly complicated, people are more likely to walk away frustrated, which can lead to bad reviews.

Then, there’s the importance of durability. A well-designed product that lasts long not only pleases customers but is also better for the environment. Think of antiques or vintage cars; they’re still around because they were built to last. This kind of timeless design can make a product stand out.

This happens when the nozzle is held too close to whatever is being heated. It won't happen if you're using it to dry your hair since it will hurt way before you get to that point. Putting the nozzle close enough to anything to meaningfully restrict the air outflow will do it. You can see from the way that the plastic is distorted that it hasn't just been softened, it has been pressed into something.

Why is there a regular doorknob on that shower door??? And why do you have your cellphone in the shower ? Maybe this isn’t the first time being locked in it & ya had to call for help . Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ 😂. But I’m wondering what prompts a need for a doorknob with a lock on a shower door. Is it that unsafe to take a shower without someone trying to bust in? I mean , we know anyone can lock u in it, but apparently there’s also a need to lock people out of it. Or cats . Whichever .. Yikes

However, with all the focus on appearance and usability, safety cannot be overlooked. Some products, despite looking good and functioning well, are dangerous because of design flaws.

Whether it’s faulty home appliances, toys, or even medical devices, defective products can lead to serious risks. These issues often arise from poor design, bad manufacturing, or lack of proper instructions and warnings.

They did this in my town. Under a train track that flood is a grate. They made a bike lane along Main Street that goes under the tracks. The grates are orintated to follow the path. So if it rains you can't see the tire will fit into the grate and flip you. Also it's a tight two way traffic so you can't swerve to avoid the grate. Death either way.

    Bisha Moten

This kind of thing happens when you have two departments handling something. The road painters were told "put bike lane here" and saw the grate and thought "not my problem" and left it. They painted the bike lane. The road asphalt department saw on the plan "put drain here" and weren't told a bike lane needed to go in, so, they put a drain in.

The grid of dots just before the rail is a stop signal. It's the same tread texture that gets put at crossing points. The grid and track following the rail is also a newer installation. I assume they put the pathing all the way around because the railing wasn't always there.

Let’s see. The corner of the wall on the left is new. The wall beyond the rail on the right is new. The dark grey guide tiles are new, as is the concrete they’re laid in. Except on this side of the rail where the tiles are cut into the existing pavement. The building itself looks pretty damned new. Anybody think that maybe, just maybe, this is new construction that isn’t even open yet, and that’s why the rail is still there?

The rail is permanent. They would not waste money putting it in then taking it out. I say this AS a wheelchair user. We see this all the time. In fact they did just like this on the corner near my house. They put it in and now a blind person will get cut in half. And if I'm going fast I miss the cut off and I get cut in half. It's so stupid! You can tell the designer is able bodied

There is a metal bus bench on an old route in Phoenix, Arizona, where temperatures can reach +110 degrees Fahrenheit . It has no shade shelter. In summer no one will sit on it because it would burn your legs.

I mean by that logic all the rest of the product designs that look like food packaging but aren’t (like the hand sanitizer) shouldn’t be a problem either then. The problem is people don’t always read and often just absent-mindedly go about their normal routines, accidentally grabbing the wrong package.

This is a remodel going on. The fire door isn't in use due to the remodel, and since the store has several more, there's no harm here. They need the door open to run the power cable (a big cable at that) so this is a good option to do so. I'm betting that the door on the left still works as intended, and the fire marshal signed off on this.

This is multiple design fails at once: 1. It's blocking the road 2. Trying to get to the manhole would be dangerous anyway.

AI generated the packaging would be my guess. Or a minimum wage graphic designer somewhere in India who wasn't even told properly what he/she was doing. Or they repurposes something that WAS intended for food by just changing the text. Considering the bottom right stuff, that actually seems most likely.

It's not AI - the Korean says 5 cereal (like the grains used). And it's meant to be a 'fun' way to advertise it. It translates to something like 'lightning white star, 5 grains/cereals'. The one on the right is for a chocolate brown hair dye. So confusing design definitely, but not AI going by the translations

My husband ( civil engineer, worked on the design implementation of among other things wastewater treatment plants) was at Hyperion in Los Angeles , one of the plants he worked at. There was a button on a pole in the middle of a group of clarifiers, no markings; so he pushed it and turned off most of the plant. They have since put a sign on that button clarifying that it was an emergency shut-off. He never heard the end of this.. this must be that button after they put that sign on lol

This is quite common with barn conversions in the UK - if you want to keep the original oak beams and structural integrity, you can't just cut a hole/gap in them. I once viewed a house with an ensuite in the master bedroom and the beam was waist level in the doorway to the toilet - big nope.

You have to try and climb up it nd it tilts a little bit to either side. Its supposed to be a fun challenge to climb up. I have seen a few in playgrounds. Although I could be wrong this is just what I have concluded.

It's not meant for climbing, it a slide still, jut that you sit on it more like a saddle, wth your legs hanging off the sides. Saddle slide.

I worked in central heating and plumbing. The burn is focused where as the radiator has a large spread area of heat distribution. Radiators are set to reach around 65 degrees centigrade and PVC window sills melt at around 280 degrees centigrade. By the look of the burn and the staining I would confidently say they should find a better place to put their incense burner

Railing around the top of the staircase hole—-preferably like a wall instead of something like an open railing—-would help keep people from accidentally falling down them. Also, I guess rearranging the furniture—-specifically the bed—-is out of the question, considering the pit for it in the floor.

Assuming they're going to install rails before they fininsh the house it's not _too_ bad, although the disguised step up from the lower entrance area is terrible, and the aesthetics just awful.

These annoy me. If you have one leg weaker than the other, you can step up using your 'good leg', bring the other after, then step up using the good leg again. Impossible with these as you'd have to cross sides every other step, and there's no fricking bannister to hold on to. Only for the young and 'healthy', which is only a percentage of the population.

Don't see any issue. Older cars only had the brake lights lower down, then they made them level with the boot, but the main light these days is at the top of the windscreen. Providing that one is working, you'll see it in time to brake.

I’m getting so tired of “creative” headlight, taillight, and brake light shapes and placement. Yes, it’s cool that LED lights let you do so many neat things that incandescent lights can’t. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
