When designing a product, designers aim to make it functional and, if possible, visually appealing as well. But, let’s be real, that doesn’t always happen. Sometimes it feels like they just run with the first idea that pops into their head—whether it works or not!
Today, we’ve rounded up some truly awful designs from the internet to show you that just because something can be made, doesn’t mean it should be. These design fails are so bad, they even seem dangerous. Keep scrolling and prepare to cringe, Pandas!

A Pop-Up In My Car Telling Me The Dangers Of Taking My Eyes Off The Road, Causes Me To Take My Eyes Off The Road
It literally came on whilst I was driving!
Whoever dreamed up the touch screen interface needs to be flogged repeatedly. Whoever thought these things should entirely replace all buttons and dials should be shot.
Now, I can see voice controls with the buttons as backup, because neither of those require you to take your eyes off the road (once you memorize where the buttons are, and as long as they’re big enough and not too close together). But the screen is b******t, especially for drivers with glasses, specifically bifocals. It takes a couple seconds to focus and see the damned screen, and those couple seconds could be just enough to drift into another lane or miss a curve or object in the road. Oh, and god forbid you don’t touch the screen exactly right, or you’ll end up hitting a completely wrong command. No, I prefer low tech buttons and dials, thank you.
Load More Replies...I love my old truck with all its knobs, dials, buttons, switches... I can do everything by feel. I could be offered a modern car for free and I still wouldn't take it! I was recently in a new car a friend got; she was just staring at this screen the size of my laptop, blazing along, poking at the screen... I am not a religious person but I found myself praying to ~something~!!! she almost ran a red light a couple times. And so concluded the first and last time I rode in her car.
My favorite is a sign saying BRAKE!! that pops up when I’m already braking. Yes, I am, thank you.
Or when you’re approaching a curve where there are parked cars. “BRAKE!!” You stupid car, I’m driving with the curve, I’m not gonna drive into those cars. Sheesh… 🙄
Load More Replies...Same with me using the “safe driving app” to get a freaking discount on my car insurance… I want a bumper sticker that warns other drivers behind me , like “ please excuse my annoyingly slow driving … I’m broke and just trying to get whatever discount on my car insurance that I possibly can”… I didn’t even drive badly/ speed or do stupid distracting things before using the dang thing.. but now I’m constantly trying to check to be sure I didn’t accidentally go over the speed limit by +6 mph or having to barely give the gas even up gangster inclines, bc oh no/ I’ll get docked 4 acceleration, or not braking beyond the softest of application that it’s put me at risk more now than I ever was prior .. ugh. Sorry … ranting about my stupid safe driving discount 😂
Car makers need to go back to knobs and buttons. No more touch screens.
it is illegal to look at your phone when driving. But this? WAY Bigger distraction.
When Your Security Gate Is A Ladder
I doubt it. The rungs are high enough to allow one to step over a spike strip.
Load More Replies...Wouldn't say a "terrible design" because it probably stops 99.5% of the folks just trying to get into the building without being buzzed in. Perhaps the company who paid for the gate didn't want the vertical bar look of a jail cell door or a 45 degree angle because it does cost more to make. This one shouldn't be high on the list in my opinion.
Yes, you don't need to make it impossible, just less easy than breaking into your neighbour
Load More Replies...I mean REALLY?!!! They couldn’t have at all foreseen the irony in that??!!!! 🤦🏻♀️
in some countries I have lived ... people would slop some adhesive (glue or concrete) and fix some glass bottles on the top (wall or gate) then break said bottles. Nasty ... but efective

In today’s competitive market, having a great product design can be quite beneficial for brands. With so many options available in the market, a well-designed product can help set a brand apart from the competition.
Imagine a washing cleaner for utensils that not only comes with better cleaning power but also features an ergonomic design that makes it easy to grip and maneuver. Or this product might incorporate eco-friendly ingredients, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers.
In a crowded market, such thoughtful design can make all the difference, turning a simple cleaning product into a must-have kitchen essential.
A Rental Car That Depends On You Having Cell Data To Be Able To Run
I'm waiting until there are less touch screens and more knobs and buttons before I buy one. I'm glad to read about these quirks bc who would've thought?
Load More Replies...Every time some new tech comes out, manufacturers all jump on the bandwagon trying to find ways to apply it to their items. Cars don’t need touchscreens if texting and distracted driving is illegal and dangerous. Refrigerators don’t need to text you to tell you you’re out of milk, you will know that when you open them to put milk on your cereal and there isn’t any. While I will say it’s nice to be able to turn a light on using your phone before you enter a room or the house, that’s about the extent of smart technology I want at home. I don’t want to be SOL if the power—-or internet—-goes out and I can’t use anything in my house; my heat or A/C, my TV, my fridge, my washer/dryer, you name it. Sometimes low tech is better.
Amen … agreed !! I it’s all to just run with this C**p so businesses can keep up with the very technology that’s killing their business to begin with, so typical people can keep up with every stupid trend, so people will become more dependent on these things and more desensitized to either what’s in some cases , really behind a lot of them or to what can and will eventually be used to further remove peoples rights, security & privacy, as these devices more and more remove any of those things and the more people are using these modern “ conveniences “ promoted to make their lives easier, the more they’re being tracked and surveilled surreptitiously & eventually ppl can’t buy & sell goods/eat/receive medical care w/out being constantly tracked & made to use these devices that aren’t going to be for their convenience/2 make life easier , but to monitor everything they do & control every aspect of what they do.. and we’re just doing nothing but allowing that advancement .
Load More Replies...Just push it back into range. It's the optional fitness add-on service, for only 20% surcharge!
Exactly! But how else could EVERYTHING everyone does be tracked and surveilled if they weren’t desensitized to it all by having all these entities promote these things as modern conveniences? I freaking despise all of it.
Load More Replies...I’ve seen electric cars, but what the hell is an app powered car ? And WHY ?
You rent it through an app, and you use the app to lock/unlock the car. I assume this is a security feature to prevent theft or something, but clearly not thought through. Parking garages often have no service, imagine having one of these shut down in the middle of a ramp and blocking everyone!
Load More Replies...Probably an "anti-theft feature" that has the car shut down if it loses connection with the rental agency.
Load More Replies...This is where technology and modernity just really annoy me …. Who on earth would make a dang car be required to have cell service/ data in order for it to run?!!!! What the mess ?!! Lord have mercy …. Have those people never traveled anywhere? It’s pretty common to have a phone drop signal where service isn’t available… Plus why does everyone HAVE TO HAVE A CELL PHONE / computer in order to do things? I’m sick of everything being online.sick of it&ppl wonder why it’s hard to find jobs&why the economy suffers when the worlds gone to computers doing all the things ppl once did not too long ago.Now we have a bunch of apathetic/ incompetent ppl who’ve grown up only exposed to social media & smart phones , etc.& they can’t handle life/ social situations/ communication/relationships bc they’re not being given a foundation of things needed to function!theyre not accountable for anything¬ growing cognitively to make judgment calls,bc computers think for them. It’s not by accident either…

Car At The Bottom Is Flooded. Car At The Top Has Been Totalled
Due to flooding, water got into the mechanism and short circuited it. It raised the platform and this was the result.
It's not a "design fail." They're not designed to function in floodwaters!! It's the fault of the idiot owner who didn't think to get his cars out before the flooding...

Load More Replies...It might seem obvious, but the first thing a good product needs is solid functionality. It should do what it’s meant to do. For instance, consider a blender. Its primary function is to mix and puree ingredients so that you can make smoothies, soups, or sauces. A high-quality blender should effortlessly blend things into a smooth consistency, without leaving chunks behind.
If the blender has a great design and comes in a variety of colors but fails to perform this basic task, then it’s not fulfilling its purpose. Regardless of how sleek or stylish it looks, people might hesitate to purchase it if it doesn't deliver on its promises.

It's the packaging for edibles that makes my blood boil... Dunno what they're like elsewhere but here they looked totally like sweets for kids, and they're now banned entirely as so many kids ate them. I'd guess it'd be hard for a 5-year-old to fit a bath bomb in their mouth, let alone go on to eat it, but they can easily scarf down chocolates and jelly babies.
Yep.. I’ve seen that on the candy isle too. They’re not as big as they appear in this pic but STILL.. I was wondering why on earth they wanted to market them as bath bombs or whatever they are 😂. So ridiculous!

More specifically, to dismount and walk their bikes. But instead cyclists will swerve into pedestrians.
Load More Replies...Then, there’s the importance of durability. A well-designed product that lasts long not only pleases customers but is also better for the environment. This Hair Dryer Melts Its Own Casing
This happens when the nozzle is held too close to whatever is being heated. It won't happen if you're using it to dry your hair since it will hurt way before you get to that point. Putting the nozzle close enough to anything to meaningfully restrict the air outflow will do it. You can see from the way that the plastic is distorted that it hasn't just been softened, it has been pressed into something.
As a stylist stylist, my advice would be to run. Fast. Unllug it first if its safe.
I had a heated brush that did the same thing. Took it back for a replacement. The replacement did the same thing.
My Cat Just Trapped Me In The Bathroom By Opening A Drawer
If it's the US surely you can just reach under the door as there must be a 1 foot gap.
This is too hilarious...I think it knew exactly what it was doing. The question is, what did YOU do to the cat?!!!
Wait... Did you have a cell phone with you in the shower? A waterproof one I guess
You don't take your cell phone in the bathroom with you?
Load More Replies...Why is there a regular doorknob on that shower door??? And why do you have your cellphone in the shower ? Maybe this isn’t the first time being locked in it & ya had to call for help . Idk 🤷🏻♀️ 😂. But I’m wondering what prompts a need for a doorknob with a lock on a shower door. Is it that unsafe to take a shower without someone trying to bust in? I mean , we know anyone can lock u in it, but apparently there’s also a need to lock people out of it. Or cats . Whichever .. Yikes
Right? Ewe… that’s kinda odd. I’m going to hope that maybe they had their phone in there to call for help bc this wasn’t the first time this happened.. I’m more curious why they have a regular doorknob on their shower door.

The Outlet Is Less Than A Foot Away From The Shower And Is Inside The Curtain. Is This Safe?
True, but it's still electrical and deadly. It's clearly not waterproof.
Load More Replies...You've heard of toaster in the bathtub. Now get ready for shower and a light switch.
It's a s*icide booth, like in Futurama!
Load More Replies...Nope. You can have GFI-protected outlets - although it's probably still better not to test that like this - but to my knowledge, you cannot have GFI-protected switches.
Yes you can, you use a ground fault breaker for the circuit, absolutely 0 chance of any danger, but probably goddamn annoying when it trips
Load More Replies...The only problem here is that neither the hot water switch or cold water switch has a dimmer, so how do you adjust the water temperature?
A product also needs to look good and create an emotional connection with users. A beautiful design can evoke feelings of pride, excitement, or satisfaction, and that’s where brand loyalty starts. People love products that make them feel good.

Stoplights In Lake Tahoe Filled With Snow Due To Not Having The Bottom Cut Out To Prevent Snow Accumulation
LED lights don't get hot enough to melt the snow like the old incandescent ones did, a lot of places discover this when they swap them.
You are both correct. I used to work for the city signal department. Whoever installed this should have put different covers on. And it is true that LED light bulbs do not produce the heat needed to melt the snow like the old incandescent ones did.
Load More Replies...I can’t help but interpret it as an imperative; “No, U turn! Because I won’t!”
I hate LED lights - stocked up on all sizes of incandescent ones - should last a life time.
This Kid-Friendly Hand Sanitizer Package. Looks Like One Of Those Apple Sauce Things, No?
Oh, the fact that its a medical professional holding it tells me somethin' bad already happened with this one.
I like the fact that the "Do Not Eat" is in such big letters and the placement!
Like kids are going to read the tiny ‘do not eat’ in the corner. 😕
However, with all the focus on appearance and usability, safety cannot be overlooked. Some products, despite looking good and functioning well, are dangerous because of design flaws.
Whether it’s faulty home appliances, toys, or even medical devices, defective products can lead to serious risks. These issues often arise from poor design, bad manufacturing, or lack of proper instructions and warnings.

Why Are Hotels Like This?
All stairs are dangerous. They need to be designed to show the edge of the step. People like me can't see the edges well and have to hang on to the rails for dear life.

I'm No Architect, But I Think The Design Needs More Bolts
There are holes for plenty of bolts, the fitters are just lazy or cheap skates.
Here's hoping that this is a photo taken during installation... I mean those bolts are probably fine just to hold the thing *itself* well enough.
I'm not saying it's the case here, but sometimes there are more holes than needed for things attached to concrete so if the installer hits rebar when drilling he or she can move to another one.
Yeah, if that is meant to be a supporting thing, someone's gonna get hurt, real bad
It’s crucial for designers to prioritize safety during the development process, ensuring that products are not only attractive and functional but also free from inherent dangers. This holistic approach to product design not only builds consumer trust but also encourages brand loyalty.

There is a light on my road that is like this, you can’t see the colour until you’re too close to it to stop.
See Gameguys response. Also red light on sign way down the street is visible.
OP is talking about the lights behind the tinted part of the windscreen, not the clear part. The tint should not affect colour perception, only light intensity.
Load More Replies...The Road Planners Must Really Hate Cyclists
Why handing the design / build jobs to the cheapest bidder is bad. If your designers don't ride bikes and/or don't visit the site (because that costs money! especially when most of the work is outsourced overseas!)...
They did this in my town. Under a train track that flood is a grate. They made a bike lane along Main Street that goes under the tracks. The grates are orintated to follow the path. So if it rains you can't see the tire will fit into the grate and flip you. Also it's a tight two way traffic so you can't swerve to avoid the grate. Death either way.
This kind of thing happens when you have two departments handling something. The road painters were told "put bike lane here" and saw the grate and thought "not my problem" and left it. They painted the bike lane. The road asphalt department saw on the plan "put drain here" and weren't told a bike lane needed to go in, so, they put a drain in.
And if you try to cross over to just a little bit of the other lane you have to face the concrete
The Most Unsafe And Dangerous Design Feature I've Seen In A Hotel
Wasn't there a grampa that got in trouble on a cruise ship holding a kid up to a window like this & the shipping company didn't see a problem?

They Tried To Accommodate Blind People But Failed To See The Problem With This Design
"Look, code says it HAS to have handrails, AND it has to have directional tactiles. I was just doing what the code says. Anyway, I'm off."
The grid of dots just before the rail is a stop signal. It's the same tread texture that gets put at crossing points. The grid and track following the rail is also a newer installation. I assume they put the pathing all the way around because the railing wasn't always there.
Let’s see. The corner of the wall on the left is new. The wall beyond the rail on the right is new. The dark grey guide tiles are new, as is the concrete they’re laid in. Except on this side of the rail where the tiles are cut into the existing pavement. The building itself looks pretty damned new. Anybody think that maybe, just maybe, this is new construction that isn’t even open yet, and that’s why the rail is still there?
The rail is permanent. They would not waste money putting it in then taking it out. I say this AS a wheelchair user. We see this all the time. In fact they did just like this on the corner near my house. They put it in and now a blind person will get cut in half. And if I'm going fast I miss the cut off and I get cut in half. It's so stupid! You can tell the designer is able bodied

I Can’t Be The Only One Who Thinks That This Looks Like Protein Powder
Unless you're dyslexic. Then have someone read them to you. Every time.

I mean by that logic all the rest of the product designs that look like food packaging but aren’t (like the hand sanitizer) shouldn’t be a problem either then. Because Who Cares About Fire Safety, Right?
This is actually a genius design. When there is a fire, the wooden board will burn away, revealing the exit. The fire exit can't be used until then. (I am just kidding, of course.)
I'm thinking that is the back of the wardrobe when you return from Narnia.
Load More Replies...This is a remodel going on. The fire door isn't in use due to the remodel, and since the store has several more, there's no harm here. They need the door open to run the power cable (a big cable at that) so this is a good option to do so. I'm betting that the door on the left still works as intended, and the fire marshal signed off on this.

This is multiple design fails at once: 1. It's blocking the road 2. Trying to get to the manhole would be dangerous anyway.

Well, it might help build a pile of bodies - that's body building in a way, right?
Looks Really Safe
This has to be one of the most dreary, depressing photos I've ever seen.
Looks like a happy place of frolicking fun otherwise. The whole impression is one of flighty happiness, isn’t it?
Maybe the other posts are for a fence to be installed? Nope that still wouldn't work. Maybe cover the drain over like they did in the walk spaces?

AI generated the packaging would be my guess. Or a minimum wage graphic designer somewhere in India who wasn't even told properly what he/she was doing. Or they repurposes something that WAS intended for food by just changing the text. Considering the bottom right stuff, that actually seems most likely.
Load More Replies...It's not AI - the Korean says 5 cereal (like the grains used). And it's meant to be a 'fun' way to advertise it. It translates to something like 'lightning white star, 5 grains/cereals'. The one on the right is for a chocolate brown hair dye. So confusing design definitely, but not AI going by the translations

To be fair, this is more an "off" design choice than a major fail? Unless those stickers had to be applied retroactively...
The stickers are on different parts of the label too, so certainly don't seem to be part of the "design".
Load More Replies...We have those bottles in my country too ... however, the company did not have the need to put those stickers on .... maybe the issue lies with the people buying them and not the people making them
Dangerous Wheelchair Ramp. Even If You Can Climb This Ramp With Your Wheelchair, There Are No Guardrails To Protect You From Falling And Hurting Yourself
Not to mention that too-sharp turn at the bottom, and the fact that the platform (which looks awfully small) isn't level with the floor of the restaurant. Could do with being swept, too.
The Display Doesn’t Indicate Which Tire Is Which. And According To The Manual, The Numbers Are Displayed Randomly Each Time You Drive
"We'll just add it to the manual so instead of a bug it becomes a feature."
Well, if the numbers are drastically different, get out and look for the tire that is flat on one side.
If you know you have to fill at least one tire, you are already going to be in a position to check. Would you really fill one tire and not top up the others?
Too bad there wasn't some little device to put on the tire when you fill it to check the pressure. /s
Not the point. Technology and tools like this are supposed to make it easier, so you don’t have to get out and squat in the dirt with a tire pressure gauge 4 times

That's Just Dangerous
Obviously the designer REALLY wanted as many people as possible to instantly push the button. Though if you do, all that happens is that a sign appears saying "Please do not push this button again."
My husband ( civil engineer, worked on the design implementation of among other things wastewater treatment plants) was at Hyperion in Los Angeles , one of the plants he worked at. There was a button on a pole in the middle of a group of clarifiers, no markings; so he pushed it and turned off most of the plant. They have since put a sign on that button clarifying that it was an emergency shut-off. He never heard the end of this.. this must be that button after they put that sign on lol

This Electric Heater Can Melt Its Plastic Casing When At Full Power
Get a Dr Heater. I had 3 different heaters in my home office. One of them died after 3 mos and the company wouldn't honor their year warranty. Started searching and found the Dr Heater and have it for 6 or 7 years and love it. My office is the coldest room in the house.
Adaptation Of A Historic Building Gone Wrong
I've sunk pretty low in my time, but not that low. Because I'm just not flexible enough.
Load More Replies...This is quite common with barn conversions in the UK - if you want to keep the original oak beams and structural integrity, you can't just cut a hole/gap in them. I once viewed a house with an ensuite in the master bedroom and the beam was waist level in the doorway to the toilet - big nope.
So basically, whoever did this renovation is an idiot or a cheapskate. Or both. I am sure there are ways to work around the beams and still have normal upstairs rooms, instead of this b******t.

Getting in and out of a vehicle while fueling is the main cause of gas station fires next to smoking at the pump so...
Re: static build-up, this is one of the guidelines from the American Petroleum Institute {Of course, the vehicle door shown in this example would not be far enough away from the nozzle}: Do not re-enter your vehicle during refueling. If you cannot avoid re-entering your vehicle, discharge any static build-up BEFORE reaching for the nozzle by touching something metal with a bare hand -- such as the vehicle door -- away from the nozzle.)
Load More Replies...This is an intentional design, to prevent the driver from accidentally driving off without putting the gas cap on, or with the fuel hose still in the tank.
Do ppl just leave to nozzle by itself while it's guzzling petrol into the car? I've never even entertained such an idea!

This Slide-Looking Thing Is On The Playground. It's Raised In The Middle And Clearly Not A Slide
You have to try and climb up it nd it tilts a little bit to either side. Its supposed to be a fun challenge to climb up. I have seen a few in playgrounds. Although I could be wrong this is just what I have concluded.
It's not meant for climbing, it a slide still, jut that you sit on it more like a saddle, wth your legs hanging off the sides. Saddle slide.

A Plastic Windowsill Above A Radiator
I worked in central heating and plumbing. The burn is focused where as the radiator has a large spread area of heat distribution. Radiators are set to reach around 65 degrees centigrade and PVC window sills melt at around 280 degrees centigrade. By the look of the burn and the staining I would confidently say they should find a better place to put their incense burner
Saw This House For Rent On Marketplace. Pretty Sure The Death Pit Isn’t Up To Code
Railing around the top of the staircase hole—-preferably like a wall instead of something like an open railing—-would help keep people from accidentally falling down them. Also, I guess rearranging the furniture—-specifically the bed—-is out of the question, considering the pit for it in the floor.

Just Saw This Bench Made Of An Old Playground Slide
damn they got us when we were young with these things and now that we are older and not playing on playgrounds but sitting on benches while our kids and grandkids are playing they make the damn benches out of those metal slides so we STILL burn ourselves on the damn things when we go to the playground! we can never get away from the metal slides.

The Best Thing On The Playground
Because part of it is blocked from use, the game always ends in a tie.
This example shows that sometimes life is hard, but you will do anything to reach your goal, it's impossible.
Designers Need To Stop Thinking This Way. One Can Go Up And Down The Stairs Mindlessly, Try Doing The Same Walking On This And It Will Take You To Hell
These annoy me. If you have one leg weaker than the other, you can step up using your 'good leg', bring the other after, then step up using the good leg again. Impossible with these as you'd have to cross sides every other step, and there's no fricking bannister to hold on to. Only for the young and 'healthy', which is only a percentage of the population.
The had to compact the staircase. It is a cross between stairs and a ladder.
If you have to “compact” a staircase, there’s something really wrong with your house design.

Load More Replies..."Let's Put The Brake Lights Where Nobody Expects Them To Be" - Buick, Probably
Don't see any issue. Older cars only had the brake lights lower down, then they made them level with the boot, but the main light these days is at the top of the windscreen. Providing that one is working, you'll see it in time to brake.
I’m getting so tired of “creative” headlight, taillight, and brake light shapes and placement. Yes, it’s cool that LED lights let you do so many neat things that incandescent lights can’t. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should.
Most high end cars don't have brake/indicator lights that work anyway! They are just for show/looks :D

A Modern Floating Staircase With Wooden Steps Is Looking Like Trip To The Hospital
It's got a handrail, and seems regular at least. It's sh*t design (especially with the short second step every time) but it's not even close to as bad as some of the bad stair designs I have seen on BP.
It's probably actually worse: this isn't some nonsense put together qucikly or cheaply but something that was designed and put together for a lot of money.
Load More Replies...Fill the under gap with books, install a handrail on the outside, and this would work.
Were those risers installed upside-down? Seems easy for a foot to catch and trip.
My 5-Year-Old Grabbed This Dangerous Cleaning Stuff As Soon As I Got Back From The Shops Because Of The Child-Friendly Packaging. It Even Says Keep Out Of Reach Of Children
That's more on the parent not watching their child or either keeping cleaning chemicals far away enough. The lid is also hard to open for such small children, even I struggle with them sometimes
I don't see anything "child friendly" about that. They've not pictured the lid, so it's not even a if they're claiming that it's not a childproof opener.
I believe the are referring to the bright colors, happy people, and cartoon-like images for child friendly. My first thought was some sort of kid's soap or bubble bath.
