Every parent wants to teach their children the right values, but how they do it matters too. If an adult forces a child to conform to their way of thinking or doesn’t give them the freedom to learn, the lesson can backfire and lead to conflicts later.

This is what a teen experienced when her dad demanded she pay for her art lessons as a 4th grader, and also cover the cost of recording the TV show he’d have to miss while taking her to class. This behavior finally came to light years later and led to a lot of drama.

When people get divorced, the decision doesn’t just impact them; it can also have a huge effect on their children. According to FamilyMeans, little ones might have difficulty adapting to their parents being apart and may also struggle to adjust to an unfamiliar living situation, school, new friends, and a different routine.

Although not all children show how this change is affecting them, it can bring out all kinds of emotions. Some may feel overwhelmed and worried about their family dynamic changing so much; others might feel angry about their parents’ decision. No matter what feelings come up for the kids, it’s important for adults to give them space to share and to listen.

Parents often feel they are doing what’s best for their children, even if their little ones don’t see it at the time

One of the biggest lessons adults try to teach their kids is the art of financial independence and budget management. According to Wise Bread, which offers tips on frugal living, parents can start by having their children save up for a few things and spend on what they really need, like treats, toys, and some gifts.

As they cross the pre-teen years, kids will automatically feel a greater need for independence and might find ways to earn a little more pocket money. Parents need to teach these lessons in a way children understand and want to apply as they grow older.

Every adult wants their little ones to grow up and save, spend, and invest money wisely. Instead of forcing young kids to follow this train of thought, personal finance publisher Kiplinger explains that parents should start small. Instead of rushing to cover every expense, adults can gradually empower their children to cover smaller costs or take responsibility for some purchases.

Another way is to help teens and young adults understand the trade-offs of any gifts they receive. For example, if their parents buy them a vehicle, the child should cover gas, maintenance, and any taxes. This slowly helps them understand what expenses exist in their life and how to manage them without much stress.

Adults should protect their own finances first before looking to solve every monetary issue for their kids

As much as parents care about their little ones and want to solve every problem for them, when it comes to money, it’s important to save enough for oneself too. This ensures adults have enough set aside for an emergency and don’t put an unnecessary burden on their kids later. It also teaches children the importance of managing their finances well and how thinking ahead can solve many problems later in life.

The poster’s dad may also have wanted to teach her the value of paying for something you really want, but he probably went about it the wrong way. Lying to his colleagues didn’t help his case, so the teen had to reveal the truth.

Do you think the poster did the right thing by exposing her dad’s lies, or should she have just played along? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the situation.

Folks felt that the teen’s dad was selfish and a liar for trying to paint himself in such a good light in front of his coworkers

Welp, I guess now OP understands why Mom divorced Dad. I bet he tried to take credit for everything she did too, after not lifting a finger to help her or even voice a little support and encouragement to her EITHER.
