42% of adults in the United States have at least one step relative

Despite what stories like Cinderella and Snow White will tell you, not all stepmothers are evil. In fact, it’s extremely common to have a stepparent and step-siblings. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, 42% of adults in the United States say that they have at least one step relative. And 18% have a living stepparent.

Understandably, though, relationships with stepparents are often not as close as those with biological parents. 85% of Americans say they feel very obligated to take care of their mother and father, while only 56% say they feel the same way about their stepparent(s).

At the same time, 78% of parents feel very obligated to take care of their adult children, while only 62% of stepparents feel the same obligation towards their partner’s children.

Now, being a stepparent certainly isn’t easy for everyone. Step Family Solutions notes that there are some harsh realities that come along with this role. Both the stepparent and their stepchildren will have to choose to and learn to love each other, as their love is not inherent.

It can also be difficult for a stepmother to have to deal with the “evil stepmother” stereotype. She might be judged more harshly by the children, which can make it harder for her to fall in love with them and want to develop a strong relationship with them.

But ultimately, as the parent and older person in the relationship, it is a stepparent’s responsibility to treat their stepchildren kindly and fairly. There’s never going to be a valid reason for being cruel, throwing away their things, and tampering with their food.

Navigating conflicts with stepparents can be complicated

When it comes to coping with a toxic stepparent, The Scapegoat Club notes that there are a few common issues that arise between stepparents and stepchildren. First, they mention that it’s common for stepparents to overstep in the relationship. They may try to create too many rules, police the child’s behavior, or control the family dynamic.

Conflicts can also arise when the biological parent dismisses their child’s concerns to side with their spouse. This can be extremely painful for the child, even if they are an adult, and it can create a tense environment at home. The Scapegoat Club also notes that unhealthy dynamics are often created when a stepparent’s toxic behavior is ignored.

As for what to do in these situations, they recommend acknowledging that your parent’s choice is theirs to make. If they want to side with their spouse, they can, even if it may damage their relationship with you.

Don’t be afraid to communicate your feelings with your parent, though. It’s possible that they didn’t even realize what kind of dynamic had been created, and they might be eager to fix whatever damage has been done.

Meanwhile, setting and enforcing healthy boundaries with a toxic stepparent is necessary. You may need to create distance and get plenty of space from them to protect your own peace and mental health.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this situation in the comments below, pandas. Have you ever dealt with a toxic stepparent of your own? And what would you have done if you were in the author’s shoes? Then, if you’re looking for another article from Bored Panda discussing similar family drama, look no further than right here.

I never understood why someone would marry someone with kids if they hate those kids. And I dont understand a parent choosing to live in denial over their kid being a****d by their spouse.

How jealous can you be? That father should have handled it faster. That being said, read into narcissism it may safe your relationship.
