Kroshik, the 17-kilogram (38-pound) cat rescued from the basement of a Russian hospital, was caught trying to escape his rehabilitation center, a sign that the feline is on the road to recovery.

After being abandoned by his owners, the cat was rescued from a hospital in Perm, where he had been fed crackers, soup, and meat.

Kroshik—Russian for “Crumb“—was so obese that he was unable to walk.

Kroshik doesn’t seem to be accustomed to his new home yet. Recently, rehabilitation specialist Ekaterina Bedakova discovered that he had broken out of his enclosure.

“Kroshik… He caused a ruckus and escaped today. He’s already a very active guy,” Bedakova shared on Telegram, as perthe DailyMail.

“He was extremely displeased when we found him disguised as slippers, but… after a portion of food, he mellowed out.”

When the ginger cat lived in the basement of a hospital in Perm, he was fed so many crackers, soup, and meat that he eventually became unable to walk

Bedakova accompanied the message with a photo of the failed escape attempt that shows the overfedfeline trapped between the bars of a shoe rack, his face pressed against a pair of blue shoes.

According to the specialist, this behavior indicates that Kroshik is slowly improving.

“We will be sure to share his recovery success. The baby will definitely come back to life!” the Mastorskin Center previously wrote on Instagram.

Kroshik, who weighs 17 kg (38 pounds), is expected to return to a healthy weight through hydrotherapy, kinesiotherapy, and a healthy diet

A healthy cat should weigh between 3.5 and 5 kg (8-12 pounds), the pet health sitePetMD notes.

One exception is the Maine Coon, a large breed that may have a healthy weight of up to 9 kg (20 pounds).

Carrying excess weight brings many health risks tocats, including diabetes, urinary disease, and arthritis. It is also associated with a decreased life expectancy.

Now, Kroshik is learning to walk again. On September 6, the Matroskin Center shared a video of Kroshik walking on a water treadmill.

The center said the pet is expected to undergo hydrotherapy and kinesiotherapy treatments 3 to 4 times a week as part of a “long and thorough” recovery process.

Last Saturday (September 7), a charity run was held in support of the Matroskin Center. Organized by students and teachers, the event raised 68,800 rubles ($755) to fund the help of sick cats.

My heart goes out to this poor creature. It is a good reminder to those of us who are pet owners to be kind to those who are in our care.

I was wondering what happened to Kroshik's belly hair. It turns out his belly was shaved to make him dry more easily after his hydrotherapy sessions.

Poor cat. Hopefully he will lose a decent amount of weight fairly quickly. I bet he's constantly meowing though. Mine had to go on a medical starve overnight preop this week and the howling for food was horrendous.

I've been following the story on Facebook of a cat named Patches, he was severely overweight when his new owner adopted him. I've learned that cats have to lose weight very slowly when they are obese, losing it too quickly can harm them. If you're interested in learning more, look up 'Patches Journey'.

I do not envy the staff their task. I kept my furball at good weight till he was about 6, then my mum got a cat, which she decided to free-feed. Now we have two overweight cats, because my cat started eating his sister's food along with the strictly measured portions I gave him, and of course Mum just kept filling the bowl. He gained two lb in two years. I finally got a chip-activated feeder for Mum's cat, and my little porker is suddenly back on his old diet, and he is MAD. It's been months, and he still is not forgiving me. But I want him back to his healthy weight.

Why do owners feed cats only snacks and soup? You don't feed other cat food to cats. Cats' faces are shocked, scared, some pictures are sad and unhappy, some pictures of cats sleeping on the shoe rack of the hospital where cats are treated, why are cat owners careless, uninterested, and uncaring about raising cats? Veterinarians, veterinary assistants and everyone involved are careless in treating and impatient in helping to treat cats, very bad......Can legal action be taken against pets? Punish those who are careless and cause the death of cats, pay a fine to www.worldanimalprotection.
