We’re all capable of being cringe. If you think that you're immune, you might want to look at some photos of yourself from middle school. Or try to recall the most awkward date you’ve ever been on. Or perhaps the worst meeting that you’ve ever led at work.

We’ve all had experiences that we shudder to think about. But these moments are a lot more amusing when they happen to other people. Bored Panda has scoured the internet to find some of the most facepalm-worthy photos that have been shared online and compiled a list of them below. Enjoy scrolling through these pics, and be sure to upvote the ones that give you secondhand embarrassment!

Cringe content certainly isn’t anything new. It’s been done countless times on television and in movies, with The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm being some of the most famous examples. But there’s something about this style of humor that people still can’t get enough of. It makes us uncomfortable, yet we can’t look away.

According to DW News, cringe content is addictive in the same way that junk food is. The kind of content that elicits what psychologists call secondhand or vicarious embarrassment can be oddly enjoyable. We can’t help but have a strong reaction to these moments, and even though they make us uncomfortable, we can start to crave that feeling.

Experts say that cringing can even be a useful reaction to have in certain situations. It indicates a level of self-awareness, as it allows you to communicate to others that you know you’ve done something embarrassing or awkward. Cringing is a way to signal to them that you didn’t do it on purpose.

And when we cringe at something another person has done, it’s often a way of being empathetic. We understand what they’re going through, and we would feel embarrassed in their situation. While it can be judgmental, it doesn’t have to be. Just because you’re cringing at something that another person has done does not mean that you’re judging them.

There are apparently two types of cringe content, according to Big Think: contemptuous and empathetic. The former is the kind where people try to distance themselves from those whom they are cringing at. They act like their situation is unrelatable and show no compassion. Empathetic cringe comedy, however, is when viewers put themselves into the “cringey person’s” shoes. They feel embarrassment on their behalf, rather than disgust or annoyance.

It’s important to remember when we’re enjoying cringe comedy that we should try to avoid “punching down.” Someone making a social faux pas can be funny, in general, but it’s best to understand the context of the situation. For example, if that person is disabled or has a disorder, it would be wrong to laugh at them. You never want to mock someone, especially not for something that they can’t help. And we all experience embarrassing moments, so it’s cruel to pretend like you don’t.

Another outlet for cringe content that many people can’t get enough of is reality television. Ria Bhatia at The Established explained that cringe is a significant factor in why certain reality shows are so popular amongst audiences.

Discussing and analyzing the cringe moments featured on these shows is particularly fascinating for many viewers, because not everyone can come to a consensus on what exactly is cringe and what is a perfectly normal reaction to any given situation. It’s fun for audiences to share their thoughts on these moments that weren’t scripted or created specifically to elicit cringe.

When reality TV lovers binge these shows, many of them enjoy feeling like they’re better than the subjects featured on their screens. They might think that they would never behave the same way in that situation, and therefore, the people on their screens deserve to be judged. Perhaps you’ve had that same feeling while scrolling through this list! If someone is going to do something so embarrassing in public, they’re just asking to be scrutinized.

Some people even say that they enjoy watching cringe shows as a palate cleanser from deeper, more intellectual programming. They can shut their minds off and simply enjoy a trashy show like they’d devour a greasy fast food burger. Meanwhile, others enjoy these programs because they can actually spark self-reflection in those who are open to it. If they see a woman fall head over heels for a man in only two days on a dating show, they might realize how ridiculous it is for them to feel the same way after only two dates in real life. Something can be gained from this cringe content if the viewer is open to it.

Corporate medicine as opposed to a completely private practice. The private practice I've been going to for decades had to sell out to an investor-owned medical group in order to survive and keep its staff, and stuff like this is what we have now. (And the medical group fired and replaced a lot of the staff the first week even though they said they wouldn't be doing that.)
