30 Times Construction Workers Tried To Cut Corners But Things Took A Turn For The Worse
Many construction roles are physically demanding which is why it is considered hard work. Every day requires lifting heavy materials and operating dangerous tools while maintaining attention to detail and following a tight schedule. Not to mention all the early mornings and late nights!
So to make it a bit easier for themselves, some workers cut corners. However, that often involves taking up more risk. And the Instagram account 'Construction Fails' is here to remind everyone that there's a limit to how far you can push these boundaries.

Load More Replies...There are many, many ways you can injure yourself at work, but the National Safety Council (NSC) found that there are seven common safety hazards that are spotted over and over again.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that working at height is at the top of the list. Issues related to scaffolding and ladders are among the most frequently cited violations. NSC consultant JoAnn Dankert said hazards associated with working at height can originate from a lack of understanding. Employers may not know they have to provide fall protection or the fall protection gear may not be worn properly or not hooked up to anything. Some employers don’t even have a written fall protection procedure or process.

But think about this, if that guy falls and the guy holding him falls too. There isn't going to be a lot left of the poor fellow. Flat as a pancake.
Another common issue is poor housekeeping. Imagine there’s a pile of things blocking the emergency exits or crumbling ceilings and leaking water that no one takes care of; all of this can contribute to slips and falls. Things like that just invite trouble and increase the risk of injury.
Not to mention other threats like allergens, biological agents, and chemicals. According to another NSC consultant, Rachel Harrington, when an organization purchases and uses chemicals, it needs to have a control system and know why they were ordered and when to use them.

Load More Replies...No, no, no. His name is Billy Bob Wayne Lee. I've seen this... after he fell. DIY is a shortcut to DIE as we say in medicine.
The number of workers and ladders required for a job are directly correlated to the size if lightbulb that must be changed. I think the equation is 1XL-LB=4W+2L. Hence, if the light bulb shoved in your mouth is standard size, you need just one ladder and 2 workers, as proven by the equation: 1LB=2W+1L. It's simple math people. Didn't you learn lightbulb-ometry in school?
The fact that he’s painting with his mouth is just the icing on the cake
Is This Any Better Bob?
There has to be an anchor point under those sandbags... the sandbags are just there to protect the structure and offer stability... right???? This is what I'm telling myself 😬
I mean, the swing stage will be fine. It is the lack of harnesses and safety lines on the guys that has me worried. Well, that plus the incorrect anchorage, plus the beams aren't tied back with cable, plus the fact the beam overhang is way too close to the building...

The most important things when it comes to preventing slips, trips, and falls are making sure that the flooring is intact, spills are cleaned and blind spots are covered with warning signs or mirrors.
Also, there’s always the issue of fire hazards. Employees should make sure that flammable materials are always kept in designated locations.

Who is this mysterious bob and why is he watching/destroyed life as we know it
Stop blaming sparks! We're the brains of the operation. We can even read "NOT ELECTRIC" off that ductwork
During renovations, we discovered why we were having trouble with our TV system. Same thing as happened here. Someone drilled through the TV power cables to put in a Power point further along the wall, some 2 feet from the TV system power point.
Smh this is why you hire someone to xray (or sonar or radar or however those things work) the floor BEFORE you bore a whole through it! The hole man is the failure here, not the electrician
Could be the electrician, could be the guy putting holes through walls, you can bet there was an awful lot of work done in finding out it was the other guys fault. Also, why BIM and 3D modelling exist

I mean, that's one way to use up scrap. Drywall mesh and a load of spackle, you may actually never know (Patched drywall with similar ridiculous amount of holes in an apartment complex as the handyman. It should never take 17 nail and screw holes to hang a curtain rod.)
Although extension cords can be useful for temporarily supplying power for certain operations, the key word is “temporarily.” When a cord is used for several weeks or months, Dankert said, OSHA doesn’t consider the use temporary. This opens the door for a violation.
Beyond that, extension cords lying on the ground for extended periods of time are a trip hazard. They also can be subject to traffic abuse if run over by forklifts or feet, which can wear down insulation and create shock hazards. When cords are daisy-chained, they can easily overdraw electricity from the circuits, causing the wires to heat up and potentially result in a fire.

The sad side, is that this is one of the safest setup in the whole page.
You know, that's kinda what working while you have your period feels like sometimes...
From today, women in Spain can have paid "menstrual leave". The law passed last December and enters into force today. It gives the right to a three-day “menstrual” leave of absence - with the possibility of extending it to five days - for those with disabling periods. It needs a doctor's note, of course, and social security will foot the bill. Of course it's too early for an evaluation (some people say that it may be a handicap for women seeking a job).
Load More Replies...In a lot of overpopulated countries (like Brazil) it's a lot cheaper for them to pay for low-wage labor instead of buying earth-moving equipment like excavators and bulldozers. You can bash America all you want but when it comes to construction safety laws and enforcing them we're way ahead of most of the world.

Parking structure design in the US requires the decking to support a concentrated load of 4000lbs spread over a 5"x5" square in cases where vehicle height is limited (representing the load imposed by a large SUV with half its weight resting on a jack.). A Genie S60 weighs 16,600lbs, so each of its 4 wheels bears 4150lbs at rest. Since they don't have much suspension, any bump or uneveness in the surface would cause a significantly higher live-load, which exceeded the design limits of the parking structure.

Forklifts are another common problem. More specifically, trying to work them quickly. When workers are under pressure, they're searching for shortcuts, which include driving with too large of a load or driving distracted. The end result may be hitting a rack, damaging a wall or product, or even injuring a co-worker.

Moving on, lockout/tagout. These procedures can help prevent serious injuries, but only if they are followed.
Violation of lockout/tagout procedures often boils down to three reasons:
- Complacency;
- A rush to finish the work;
- Being unfamiliar with the equipment.
A lot of organizations have the best procedures in place, but it’s the implementation that fails.

Bob You Remember To Put Up The Pylons Right?
What is a 'pylon' in this context? In English, they are support towers, usually used to carry high voltage power lines. How do America use the word? From the context, I'd been expecting to see the words 'traffic cones' or 'road barrier'.
We call traffic cones pylons sometimes in North America (edit: I’m 🇨🇦, from BC. I’ve worked in traffic control and currently in automotive. We use them every day and call them “pylons” 90% of the time, I actually only learned the term “traffic cone” when I was in training for traffic control. I didn’t even realize some people didn’t know them as “pylons” until this post. Y’all can try to tell me “I live here and I’ve personally never heard that,” but the fact that you haven’t personally had this experience doesn’t mean everyone else is wrong, all I can do is 🤷♀️🤷♀️ try googling “pylon emoji” and see what comes up.)
Load More Replies...Unless he had to move them to get through then no, they're not.
Load More Replies...Everyone is right about what a pylon is! It is all those things. If you're curious why all these seemingly disparate things are all called pylons, look up what a pylon is in the context of air racing.
I saw some questions asking about the word pylons. This comes from some places calling the little cones used in gym class, "pylons." The ones in school would not be called traffic cones, obviously. Then the word pylons was used for the larger ones used outside for actual traffic control. Many construction workers and other people know and use traffic cones, but most others have only heard the one word for it. My question is what do you who use UK English call the little tiny cones in gym class, since pylon is in use for the tower supports?
I’m giggling uncontrollably at these. I must be tired. Poor Bob, but mostly poor everyone-around-Bob. 😁
I Feel Like Bob Is Starting To Tell A Story
What kind of mistake are they trying to cover with that much wite-out ??!!??
Chemicals can be expensive, and workers in some industries may never know when they’ll need to use them, but this kind of thinking can lead to serious hazards. Before you know it, you have all these materials no one wants or needs.
It may be easy to overlook a small, 5-gram bottle, but those 5 grams can become unstable over time. When an organization purchases and uses chemicals, it needs to have a control system. It needs to know what the chemicals are for and why they were ordered.
Another potential hazard is transferring them from one container to another. Even if employees feel comfortable doing it and have performed these tasks for years, the containers must be labeled as required under the hazcom standard.

It looks like the entire roof was done by someone who had no idea whatsoever about how to lay shingles. We can only hope it's in a place where it never rains. Otherwise, they're going to get drenched inside.
The work around the window, is awful and will surely leak. There will be no final walk through as the owners will sue encore that happens!!
Finally, we come to confined spaces. They can present a number of hazards, and many tragedies involving confined spaces have occurred because an employer didn’t issue a permit or failed to carry out a risk assessment.
If the risk assessment and permit process are done correctly, and all steps are followed, employers shouldn't have a problem.
Bob Just Doesn’t Have Time To Rent Scissor Lifts
I think all of these guys have already had enough accidents that they can’t think straight anymore.
I Got You Bob
To be honest: nothing you can do on an official job site, but for home improvement, this isn't too bad. Just guesstimating, using my index finger as a ruler, I'd say black shirt guy has to hold about 20% of white shirt guy's weight by pure leverage. White shirt guy ain't the bulkiest, let's say (and that's a stretch) 80 kg, plus the ladder weighing 10kg of which Black Shirt has to hold roundabout 50%. That makes roughly 20kg. So that's a crate of beer. For any movement White Shirt makes, Black Shirt only has to compensate for about 20% as well, the rest is going to go into the ground without any effect. This makes it way more stable for Black Shirt, as he's got way less load, and way more stable for White Shirt, cause Black Shirt won't jiggle as much (and even if he does, the leverage will compensate). I mean, it'd STILL be a better idea to get a specialised ladder, yadda yadda yaddy, but be honest: for that ONE LIGHTBULB you need to put in, would YOU rent that?
Math, logic, calculations blah blah. The guy in the black shirt lost a bet to the white shirt guy on who had the biggest nuts
Load More Replies...There are many companies here in North America that routinely put their workers in peril- expecting workers to climb more that one storey on a ladder by themselves, ( the ladder can kick out from underneath, the correct way is to have someone using their body weight on the bottom). Not enforcing safety equipment, safety glasses, respirators, Niosh Respirators, not providing sufficient protection from toxins like lead, asbestos, insecticides…. I will never forget when a tech came to spray for mud daubers and he was directly beneath downwind from the poison he was spraying by a few feet! He had sores around his nose and mouth, on his hands, was very pale and I feared greatly for his health. Sadly, many companies employ contractors because it absolves them of moral responsibility to their staff.

The NSC consultants stress that the seven hazards presented are by no means an exhaustive list. And as you can see in the pictures, many other hazards can exist at a worksite, and spotting them requires vigilance.
