Conquer Rome With Your Dog

With only a few days to explore Rome, we set out to see the main sites with our 17lb dog, Tikka, right next to us, but also took time to enjoy the Eternal City through daily, local experiences. Mornings were our groove – the temperature was fantastic for us and someone sporting black fur and the crowds didn’t start to swarm until late morning. This made it easy to get great pictures just the way you want them as you could move freely around the Roman attractions and the light was beautiful, kissing the buildings with a warm glow.

Our first morning took us on an urban hike from the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and Circus Maximus. Did you know that there is a huge public park in the middle of Rome, converted from ancient ruins? The largest stadium of it’s time, Circus Maximus is now a local playground for people and dogs and we let Tikka off leash to stretch her legs on the old chariot racing track.

We took time to chat with a few locals walking their dogs, lingered over morning espresso and watched Rome turn into a bustling hive of activity. This is what traveling with your dog is all about – visiting key sites on your list but taking time to slow down and see what’s under a city’s ‘hood’.
