Let’s Talk About Sexism: 20 Comics That I Created When Thinking About Male And Female Roles In The Media
I drew these comic strips several years ago when I was back in school getting my Education degree. We were discussing sexism and misogyny in the media and someone brought up the old TV show, Three's Company. That show was near and dear to me! I told a couple of anecdotes about playing episodes of that show in some adult EFL classes in both Japan and Vancouver, Canada and we all wondered what damage I had done!
I had used Three's Company in the Language classes because it was funny, because contained a lot of physical and/or very simplistic humor, and because it was not overly linguistically challenging. It had also been a personal favorite when I was growing up and provided some nostalgic entertainment when I was feeling homesick or, perhaps, too hungover to plan a lesson.
This all got me thinking about how male and female roles were portrayed in Three's Company and how it may have influenced my own views on the matter. Sure, there were some very obvious and blatant sexist and misogynistic elements in the show, but how much of that was a feminist message in disguise. The raging bigot, Archie Bunker, from All in the Family was not intended to promote racism but to shine a spotlight on it, making it fun to learn: to become "woke" so to speak.
All this gave rise to Jack and Janet Dingle-nuts. The Dingle-nuts is a bit of an exploration of sexism, of how it can be a two-way street, an accidental wrong turn, an intentional detour and its pervasiveness in our lives. But, mostly, The Dingle-nuts are a tribute to the glory days of episodic sit-coms and a loving homage to Three's Company.

I absolutely can't stand the "she's probably on her period" or during pregnancy "she's hormonal" just because her opinion/feelings doesn't correspond with yours. BLAH.
yup. It's pretty stupid.
Load More Replies..."Doll face" comes from the 1920s-1950s. It would be said by "tough guys" or men with power who thought it was a kind of compliment. It was considered very condescending.
Load More Replies...This dude makes me want to throw my computer across the room, but I won't, because I actually have a brain.
This is spot on. We should change our language around women's rights and things like voting. It's less that women were "given" the right to vote, because a) those rights weren't "given", they were battled for - but also b) the REAL way to talk about it is that rights were WITHHELD until [date].
"What do you want to order?" usually goes well at my house until hubs does the bills and complains about our food budget...
Load More Replies...It's implying that guys only want sex and will agree to everything as long as sex is on the table. And the only way for women to get attention or to be heard is to meet those wishes. I've seen several of these type of videos on Instagram (some type of trend) and it's supposed to be funny but it isn't. It's degrading for both men and women. And try to uphold patriarchal standards of men supposed to always be ready for sex (if they don't they are not "real" men) and that women's only purpose is for sex (and if they don't meet those standards they are unfuckable and therefore useless). These comics are great at highlighting such issues for both genders.
I'm not sure if your comment is a compliment or a complaint... and that may be why I like it so much! One of the general themes throughout the entire series is "grey area", not absolutes (i.e. only wanting sex). There are hints and indications that they both like sex, he also likes cooking and hockey.... etc. The strips ARE meant to be degrading to some behaviours and ways of thinking in both men and women - as well as societal roles, "norms" and expectations about couples, partners, spouses whatever. This is satire and social commentary intended to be just funny enough to make thinking about these problems just painless enough.
Load More Replies...the comic is implying that men will only listen to woman if there is sex involved. boobies showing= the man saying "hey maybe we should do what she wants for once"
Load More Replies...OH MY GOSHHHHHHHHHH I need to call 911 and get the burn unit on speed dial
Load More Replies...Why is body shaming considered funny when it is aimed at men, but not when it is aimed at women?
Then for Valentine's Day, you should tell her, we love each other every day.
This one doesn't make much sense. We celebrate Mother's Day and Father's day even though they're mothers and fathers year round, we celebrate Easter despite Jesus is risen all year, Valentine's Day despite we love each other all year, Independence day even though America is its own country all year, etc. We just set aside one day to show particular appreciation.
That is true but I'm not sure how it relates to this particular comic or series. Can you explain your concern more fully, please?
Load More Replies...What kind? Satire, social commentary and, I hope, slightly humorous and thought-provoking. What makes you cringe? the content or the quality?
Load More Replies...Young Men must be taught the importance (and Rewards) for being a thoughtful and generous lover.
Load More Replies...Why is this so common? The majority of men I've slept with does this, especially after bragging how good they are in bed. Or even worse "your orgasm, your responsibility" when they only want piv sex without a vibrator. Eh. Sex is something that should be mutual. How is it ok to be so selfish? I read some article who said 29% of women in heterosexual relationships say they orgasm every time during sex vs 75% for men, the orgasm gap. I find it so sad.
I think many women just assume that men will take care of their own orgasm, so men just assume the same for women.
Load More Replies...Men, remember, if you want head you must offer head. It’s just common courtesy.
uh basically that some men like to say "women first".... until it comes to sex and the guy doesn't let the girl 0rgasm first. (or he doesnt help her 0rgasm at all)
Load More Replies...that's not why she is disappointed.
Load More Replies...She is independent and he likes to test samples. Don't be so judgemental.
Cringe is the perfect reaction to horrible double standards.
Load More Replies...how about, we don't grab anybody asses unless it is consensual and both parties are fine with it.
omg you solved all the worlds problems MY MIND IS BLOWN 😱
Load More Replies...Someone should teach tRUMP a lesson about grabbing. A couple of years in prison might work.
So it's a party where they show and sell lingerie and sex toys to a group of women. No men. It's super fun. Husband was happy I went too. Win-win (the one I went to, all the ladies were already married)
Load More Replies...If he's coming at the computer with a hammer then he needs to have his hammer privaleges revoked.
he learned from the tf2 engineer, when you hit something it gets fixed!
Load More Replies...My husband is terrible at tech and just asks me to fix it. He knows his limits... Most of the time...
She shouldn't be hiding passwords from her husband on the family device.
him, who would have fixed it without hurting her feelings to the point where she needs alcohol to recover. malicious b***h.
This one is difficult though. Because a lot of women have to care about men being satisfied in order to keep themselves safe. I really appreciate all the work the male author has gone through to understand female perspectives but this still seems to elude him.
That isn't a single gender thing. There are plenty of men who have abusive wives and who are less likely to get support because people don't believe men can be victims of domestic violence.
Load More Replies...I hate when ppl say “oh how nice of your husband to babysit!” B***h its called PARENTING
I don't know.... My ex used to offer to watch the kids so he can get credit for offering but he never actually agreed to do it. So when he offered, I'd laugh. Not because he shouldn't or couldn't but because there was NO CHANCE that he was going to do it.
Load More Replies...Agree. Even if the man is the only one working (nothing wrong with that if you prefer it that way in your family) there's no reason he can't spend time with his kids. It should be a thing he looks forward to!
I come home from work and it's 6 pm. I take care of the baby from that point until he goes bed so my wife can have a breather. On the weekends I have him all day so she can relax. It's called... Being a parent
So when do you get a breather? It seems like you are either at work or parenting all day every day while your wife gets breaks.
Load More Replies...Usually when my mom is ay work and my dad is sleeping I take care of my siblings but my dad almost always makes the food on those days. His cooking is amazing!
How this usually goes in my house "I have a 2 hour class on your day off. Should I arrange a babysitter or can you take care of the kids and save some money?"... His reply, "It's better to arrange a sitter..."
What makes you say that? the content? - I agree; that's why I drew it.
Load More Replies...So she can admit she isn't satisfied but he isn't allowed to? Why are these two even married?
How about sex is complicated and takes work sometimes
Load More Replies...Funny that it's OK to quote a "sexist" thing when she wants something...hmm, there's something wrong there.
But I do that all the time. Not with dishes, no. I would never dare. But I can’t take things when they’re passed to me. My hands don’t want to work.
Same with me, except itswitbnmy breain. My brInza don't wanna wexrk
Load More Replies...Okay but this is bs. He lives there. He helps create the dirty dishes. She does not help create footballs. The two things are not comparable, and if he's managed to eat off the plates he can't be that terrible with them.
On a good day or if I can't get the door, I don't mind the door being held. Other times, I still purposely hold the door for a guy and kept holding it "to make sure he's ok".
I remember when I started holding the door open for men. Some men were so confused; others would seriously refuse to go through. I’d be holding the outside handle, and he would lean his forearm against the inside glass. It was like a Mexican standoff in the doorway of 7-11. So weird!
Load More Replies...Then women should say "Gentlemen first" to be polite as well.
Load More Replies...except the man wearing full combat gear wielding a comically large spoon.
Load More Replies...This is my favourite of the what is a satisfied woman what is a satisfied man comics. Because though it ends with a cringe worthy line from Jack, they both think about it and don't make snap judgements.
This is just weird. Why would you try to push someone down someone just for the sake of it? Cause nothing but hurt, unnecessary conflict or hard feelings.
I think it's supposed to be that women are the cookers and babe great food, and guys are the workers and don't make good food
Load More Replies...This is just weird. Most women would be ecstatic and give him a weekly day to cook...
There's a method to eating spaghetti where you use the spoon to help twirl the noddle around the fork. Here's a picture to see how it's done: https://imgur.com/a/hsqjBr8
Load More Replies...man, I love how you can talk about sexism using something other than "man bad"
uh, it shows the problem of gender stereotypes towards men AND woman, i think the sexist part is the point.
Load More Replies...Am here to say a big thank you to this man who help me with his powerful spell to bring back my ex who left me for someone else , thank you my ex is back to me , if you want his help you can email him: greatmutaba@ gmail. com
Who said it was OK? Not the cartoonist who was trying to show sexism can go both ways.
