Young Woman Issues Urgent Warning About Going To Nail Salons After She Ended Up In The Hospital

A routine beauty appointment took a frightening turn for a 27-year-old Sydney woman, who claims a simple trip to a nail salon landed her in the hospital with a life-threatening medical emergency.

Claudia Ruffin, who first shared her story last November, has recently reignited the conversation surrounding the risks associated with so-called beauty treatments and issued a stern warning to others.

“I worked in dermatology for 10 years and after about a week on the job I never stepped foot in a nail salon ever again. I’m so sorry this happened to you,” one sympathetic netizen wrote.

Following a Valentine’s Day manicure in Sydney in 2024, Claudia contracted a severe strep infection that triggered life-threatening sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency in which the body’s immune system overreacts to an existing infection.

The Sydney resident first shared her story on social media platforms, including Instagram and TikTok, where it gained widespread attention last year.

According to Ruffin, she visited a high-end salon in the upscale suburb of Double Bay to treat herself.

During the manicure, a technician clipped Claudia’s thumb cuticle, drawing blood. She also noticed the technician was not wearing gloves and was sharing tools with another staff member.

Within 10 minutes of the appointment, she claimed her lymph nodes felt sore, and within hours, she experienced a racing heart, blurry vision, and numbness in her toes.

By the next morning, her thumb was swollen, and red tracking lines were visible, extending from her thumb toward her neck, a classic sign of a spreading infection.

She was then rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital, where doctors discovered that her thumb had turned black within an hour of admission due to a condition called necrosis, or tissue damage.

As part of her treatment, she reportedly underwent six emergency surgeries during a month-long hospital stay.

Doctors even performed a partial amputation of her thumb down to the nail bed, along with a skin graft to repair the damage.

She required 48 stitches and spent a year in and out of the hospital for reconstructive procedures.

Since the incident, the 27-year-old has shared multiple videos documenting her hospital stays, the condition of her thumb, and the amputation she underwent, among other details.

In one TikTok video shared last November, Claudia told her viewers, “I barely remember my first week in hospital.”

She emphasized, “I cannot stress the importance of doing your own due diligence on nail salons to ensure they are maintaining hygienic and sterile practices and to understand the risks. Because I didn’t.”

The conversation resurfaced earlier today after Ruffin shared a series of graphic images on TikTok to mark the two-year anniversary of her final surgery.

She posted a carousel of photos, including real-time images showing faint but distinct red streaks extending from her thumb toward her neck.

Other images showed her thumb after it had turned black within an hour of her hospital admission.

Photos detailing the aftermath of her six surgeries, including the 48 stitches, skin graft, and partial amputation down to the nail bed, were also shared, alongside a caption that read, “What sepsis recovery looks like 8 months on…”

The final image showed Claudia bedridden, smiling for the camera and flashing a peace sign with her bandaged hand.

The post was captioned, “TikTok won’t let me put up photos that are graphic so I hope this is enough to warn you about manicures #sepsis #manicure.”

Reacting to Ruffin’s warning, one user wrote, “As a nail tech, this makes me so sad!! And reminds me why I meticulously clean and sanitise my workspace and tools. I’m really sorry this happened to you!”

While many have urged her to sue the nail salon, Claudia has not publicly confirmed filing a lawsuit, and it appears unlikely, as she has admitted on social media that she “didn’t do her due diligence” in checking the salon’s sterilization practices before the appointment.

According to research, sepsis always begins with an infection, most commonly bacterial, but it can also be viral, fungal, or parasitic.

Instead of only fighting the germs, the immune system triggers a widespread chain reaction that can damage the body’s own healthy tissues and organs.

Symptoms include rapid breathing, a high heart rate, and clammy or sweaty skin. The condition can develop very quickly and requires immediate hospitalization.

It has also been reported that nail salon visits can, in rare cases, lead to sepsis due to unsterile tools or unsanitary foot baths.
