Artist Sculpts Incredible Architectural Spaces That Are Carved Into Marble And Stone (30 New Pics)
Interview With ArtistChiseled doric columns, ornate arches, vaulted ceilings, staircases, and tiny sculptures within a sculpture—all of this fits into miniature architectural spaces that resemble ancient and medieval ruins and sacred architecture carved into raw marble and stone. These historical sculptures are brought to life by an internationally acclaimed British sculptor, Matthew Simmonds (previously here on Bored Panda), who currently lives and works in Denmark.
His intricate three-dimensional interiors look very real from up close until you see that they are sculptures that are often less than a foot wide. In his work, Simmonds draws inspiration from real historical buildings, but most of his works are not reproductions and offer his own take and expertise on classic architecture.
Check out the amazing gallery of some of the best works that Simmonds has sculpted since 1999 when he gained his first recognition.

I'd love one of these, with the images tailored to my life. What a keepsake it would make!
Absolutely stunning! I love the contrast between the orderly, perfect columns and the rough, textural stone.
I love how the light shines down through the decorative roof onto the two-tiers.
I love the variety of the "knickknacks" in the cubby holes. Each figurine is so perfect. Beautiful work. Truly eye candy. Thank you.
This color stone plus the designs in the carving makes me feel a religious intent. Touched me deeply. I adore the pristine and cool white marble pieces, but this feels like home.
I like this one. Such depth in such a small area. A challenge reaching back I would imagine. Very, very nice!
I love the texture in this piece! There is the smoothness of the carving, but it is combined with the unevenness of the stone. I will never look at rocks the same way again, wondering what is hiding within them...
I would like a book of these works, or postcards to put up. I don't want to stop looking at them. What a gift and what sensitivity.
