10 Years Ago Mom Told Son To “Sober Up” And Make His Own Christmas Cards, Son Doesn’t Disappoint Every Year
If you like family Christmas cards but can’t relate to them on a personal level, comedian John Cessna is the guy you need. John was away for school during the 2008 holiday season when his mom called him, informing that John would be missing their family’s Christmas photoshoot. “She jokingly suggested I ‘sober up’ and send out my own Christmas photo cards,” he told Bored Panda. Like the good son that he is, John followed his mother’s instructions and has been creating his own funny Christmas cards ever since. However, it’s probably safe to say that it turned out to be not the photo ideas that his mom had in mind. “At first [my] mom wasn’t a huge fan and kind of shrugged it off, but she’s come around and now thinks they’re ‘ok, sort of funny.'”

“I feel like this year’s photo card was a shift to a simpler workflow,” John added. “Instead of shooting for spectacle, we came up with a fun idea that we loved and executed it as grandly as possible, while still focusing on having fun. This project is rooted in friendship for myself and my collaborators. It’s a chance for us all to come together and work on something like we used to in college. We’re spread across four states now, all with jobs, some with kids, so it’s a reunion, and I think this year had a strong focus on that. These are never gonna make us famous or rich, so let’s have fun.”
“Well, this is the tenth year for the season’s greetings cards, and if Jason X was in space, then I wanted to bring space to the cards,” the comedian said. “Honestly, it just seemed like an idea we hadn’t explored before: another turn in the supernatural with a pop culture twist. We started thinking about how TV signals echo through deep space and somewhere aliens are probably watching 24 hours of a Christmas story.”
“At the end of the day some of the closest people in the world to me all came together around an idea that we thought was funny, and as we grow up and have to worry about bills, work, and generally life’s frustrations, it was really refreshing to create something with people I love. Even if that did involve a severed leg.”
