People Are “Sick” Of Parents Not Controlling Their Kids After One Brings Light-Up Hat To Red-Eye

Sometimes the one thing you really need is a little bit of rest. Just a teensy bit. A wink, really. But it seems that whatever force is governing this particular reality just isn’t in the business of giving you a break.

Driving home? Traffic everywhere. Trying to shop before coming back? More people than you’ve ever seen in a store. Nodding off in a bus? Pothole larger than your will to live. Red-eye flight? You won’t believe this – a kid with a glowing, strobing hat, and you didn’t even get your rave glow sticks…

Sometimes it takes just one single person to transform one hours-long experience into a glimpse of hell

The internet was briefly caught in a storm of rage after witnessing a vid of a kid with a strobing hat on a night flight

So, imagine, you’re taking a red-eye flight – if you’ve never flown, that’s an overnight flight which lands in the morning – and you’d really like to get some sleep. I’ve never flown on a plane before, so I’m imagining it right with you.

Maybe you’re not naïve anymore and know the thing you’ll be getting won’t be sleep, per se. After all, you’re sitting up, not enough leg room, people too close – nothing that would make a good rest.

On the other hand, the dim lights, the soft murmuring of people and you begin drifting… Waking up hours later, all warm in the best way conceivable and significantly more drooling than befits a person of your stature.

Respectable droolage for a Saint Bernard, though.

Image credits: Josue Isai Ramos Figueroa (not the actual photo)

It was one of those hats with pop-up bunny ears, complete with an “annoying multicolor strobe light” feature

Unfortunately for the passengers on the flight we’re talking about today, there was no sleep in sight. Emphasis on sight. That’s right, not even a little droolage for them, not this time.

For you see, in this video, shared by the illustrious page sarcasm_only on Instagram, you can see our main character, a little kid, with some ungodly abomination on their head.

It seems to be one of those hats with the little fuzzy straps that you can pull on to make the bunny ears perk up. You probably saw quite a lot of them a couple of years ago in memes of parents playing around with them.

But I’ve never once seen a hat of that type with that annoying amount of color-changing strobe lights, not even at a rave. And I’ve been to those, so I don’t need to imagine anything this time. You still can, though!

It’s unsure if the child was seated next to their laissez-faire parents or if they were just left to their own devices

While the people in the far back of the plane may not be affected and only wondering what that multicolor blip is, people who just want to get some sleep or, even worse, folks who suffer from photosensitive seizures, are probably downright enraged.

Yeah, that’s right, if someone had been or perhaps even was sensitive to flashing lights, they could go into what’s called a “generalized tonic-clonic seizure” also known as a convulsive seizure.

These should last no longer than 5 minutes, but can have some pretty scary symptoms: loss of consciousness, muscle contractions, involuntary crying out, biting down on tongue and cheeks, and losing control of one’s bladder…

Yeah, “funny glowing rabbit hat” isn’t as funny anymore, is it?

Image credits: Aleksei Zaitcev (not the actual photo)

While the kid may be a little cute and they do look happy with their strobe hat, it’s easy to be upset at them for acting this way. Truth be told, you should be mad at the parents, rather than the kid.

I’m not sure if that’s the parent, looking at the camera with a weird rictus, but if they are, they should really rethink their life choices. But perhaps they’re one of those parents who believe that their kid is oh so precious, cute, and funny, which means that everyone should give them the totality of their attention. Ugh.

This video went pretty viral, collecting 350k views and over 6.5k comments. Share your own thoughts about the story below! Would you fly on kid-free airlines if you got the chance to?

Many people didn’t bite their tongue with sharp remarks aimed at the kid

Many also wondered what the parents are thinking and considering the ramifications if someone was photosensitive

Some even took the time to write out their thoughts, either in attempt to educate others or roast people saying “just deal with it”

While I was ok with it in the pics, when I saw the video, I must confess I thought 'f**k that', I would not put up with the flashing on a flight. If it just lit up, I'd be ok with it because it's not too intrusive (except maybe for the people directly either side and behind). With that being said, what an awesome hat!!!! Anyone know where I can get one in adult size?

Im not epileptic, but flashing lights like that make me super nauseous if it goes on for more than a few seconds, and the longer it goes on the more likely I am to have a cluster migraine episode. And with it being so bright? It was lighting up the back if the cabin! Not a chance. The attendants should have shut that down immediately, especially with dad looking like he was ready to have a show down with anyone that said something. This must've been terrible for everyone on the plane. Very inconsiderate parents. I don't normally sleep on flights, and the window shades aren't always closed, but such bright, strobe lights would be majorly unpleasant. It's the same with parents buying their children blinking toys to wave around during a circus. Fun for the kids, distracting for everyone else.

The kid thats in costume everywhere they go usually has a parent who refuses to teach their kids boundaries and limitations thinking thats a good thing. Then the kid grows up to throw adult tantrums on planes and insist they be let off by opening the emergency door or screeching "that mother effer is not real! You can die if you want to but Im getting off!" because she thought her brother in law stole her ear buds, then tries to reboard an hour later after delaying the flight hours for everyone else.

This is just ridiculous. It wouldn't be so bad, maybe, if it was an earlier flight. But the redeye? Totally Inappropriate. How many times have we all said "where are the parents?" It's the "free to be me" generation. "We let Johnny make decisions for himself on what he wishes to do." That's just a BS cop-out. Set rules and boundaries for your kids. Teach them respect for others and how to act in restaurants and other public places. Wait until these kids get older and realize the entire world isn't there for their sheer entertainment.

I would use "I'm epileptic, if this causes a seizure, I'll sue both you and the airline", because that seems to be the only way to get people to behave. But this being said, nobody should have to go that far, we just should find a way to keep selfish twats from having kids /s

While there are MANY, I mean MANY cringe worthy incidents with children on a plane, I can't see this being one. If this child was up, screaming non-stop, running around, everyone would still be mad. What happened to taking the good with the bad and understanding that not every situation is as easy as it sounds. My son is prone to seizures, however, this is just reaching. Be Happy th patent found something to keep the kid entertained, otherwise you could be dealing with much worse. What happened to compassion? Compassion for parents that are dealing with treading new waters and doing the best they can? Why make people feel horrible for kids being kids, when you know they are already trying to keep the kid entertained? The one comment, "what happened to people controlling their kids", clearly, you have ZERO KIDS, and if you do, I feel sorry for them. If we're dealing with a toddler on a flight, it's only a few hours out of our lives. What about the poor parents in anxiety mode about it?

Good parents exist too. Sad this kids parents aren't some of them. She'll probably grow up to be an entitled Karen who thinks everyone else should adapt to her wants and needs. If I have to put on an eye mask, then that kid is going to see and hear the most inappropriate, ranchy, swear filled comedy I can find. If the parents don't like it, hey- earplugs and eye masks exist for kids.

So if I started watching and listening to something totally inappropriate, or scary right next to that kid you'd say the same thing right? Taking care of myself includes watching grisly true crime stories, the parents shouldn't worry about what I'm watching. They can tell their kid to close her eyes and plug her ears the whole flight. Right?

The video makes it look brighter than it is. You can tell by the ambient areas around it that it's just a dull glow. Honestly, a bunch of fukcing cry babies. It's not like that hat was a bright Beacon getting in your eyes, it basically glowed. The plane wasn't totally dark nor would it ever be, and that hat really doesn't add much of anything. And as you're down voting me, here's the thing you're not getting: we all have to have Community Spirit when we are all together. Yes you can look at it as that means that person should not have had that hat on. The reality way to look at it is, your choice, whether you like it or not, is either a crying child or a dull glowing light. Your choice. I would rather mind my own business and not notice the dull glow as opposed to having to hear a screaming kid for 4 hours.

I don't normally sleep on flights, and the window shades aren't always closed, but such bright, strobe lights would be majorly unpleasant. It's the same with parents buying their children blinking toys to wave around during a circus. Fun for the kids, distracting for everyone else.

If I'd see this while entering, I hope I'd be able to turn around and leave immediately. Flashing lights trigger my epilepsy. And I hate it when that happens. (a warning on the video would also be kind)

My daughter had juvenile epilepsy. This would absolutely have triggered a fit.

This is actually hazardous. It could easily cause seizures or migraines in other people. I always bring 2 eye masks but seriously this would suck. I would go 75 percent Karen depending on how far away it was.

The video image is not actually a link for me. Nothing happens when I click it. Was anybody else able to get to the video? Can someone provide simply a link for it please?

Flight attendants have a responsibility to reign in this type of behavior. As many others have pointed out, this could be a real danger to epileptics, not to mention just plain annoying.

I would use "I'm epileptic, if this causes a seizure, I'll sue both you and the airline", because that seems to be the only way to get people to behave. But this being said, nobody should have to go that far, we just should find a way to keep selfish twats from having kids /s

I'm always reminding my kid to be mindful of others around her, because I want her to grow up and be a considerate, thoughtful human. Imagine that! Sad not everyone does this.

I definitely would not want to be on a flight with kids, I'm epileptic and things like that can cause me to have a seizure, I can't be around any type of flashing lights especially at night.

Video doesn't work, and the update link only goes to the Apple version. There is no update in the Play Store. So once again, Panda is penalising Android users?

I'm so glad that there are airlines that will have a designated child flying section. 16 and under. Prob have to sit w one parent or guardian. But I'd hate to be that cabin crew. Dirty diapers and cheerios after every flight.

There are other ways to keep a kid happy that don’t affect those around them. Why do so many adults find such a simple concept so hard to wrap their heads around?

If the parents didn’t at any point think “This is a dreadful idea and will make many other people’s lives worse” then a sharp dose of shame will likely be more effective than a polite request.

And oddly enough none of that makes this situation ok. Plus you are ignoring all the people with epilepsy and migraines saying this is a health concern. Maybe think next time before deciding it isn't that big of a deal.

If your kid is that age, and has to wear a glowing pair of ears on a night flight, otherwise they’ll scream for four hours, then you’re a lousy parent.
