Caring for an infant is never a walk in the park, and parents sometimes need a break. However, raising a child this young comes with responsibilities you can’t put on hold.

That means stepping out of the house, no matter how long, requires having an adult caregiver around to keep an eye on the baby. This mom, however, thought it would be fine to leave her 9-month-old home alone while she went out for the night.

One of her friends was shocked to hear what she did and immediately took action.

An infant child can still be at risk of danger even while asleep

The mom likely thought leaving her infant unattended was fine because the baby was asleep. She may not have realized the inherent dangers the child still faced.

According to pediatric nurse Katherine Ehrhardt, the crib itself can be hazardous.

“While we always want to provide comfort to our infant patients, items such as blankets, toys, and stuffed animals in the sleeping environment can put babies at risk,” she said.

The author’s mention of CPS (Child Protective Services) implies that the story took place in the United States. And according to federal law, a parent is liable for child neglect if they fail to meet the physical and emotional needs of a child under 18.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines neglect as abandoning a child’s need for “housing, food, clothing, education, access to medical care, and having feelings validated and appropriately responded to.”

According to the American Psychological Association, neglected children are not only prone to frequent injuries, but they may also be at risk of learning and behavior problems, depression, and fear of certain adults and places.

It is also why the APA encourages reporting suspected cases of neglect, as it can save the child’s life from potential repercussions. In that sense, the author was right to report the incident to CPS. Their friendship with the mom may be strained, but it was the proper thing to do.

I do not have children, have never had children, and have not spent much time around babies/children in my life. But I do know that things can go south in a heartbeat with infants/babies... that's literally why we have a category of infant déaths called SIDS - sudden infant déath syndrome. Even if the baby's crib is safe, SIDS can occur. Mom being home may not prevent SIDS, but can you imagine arriving home from leaving your baby alone so you can go out to dinner and finding your baby déad when you got home? And so many other things can happen when a child is left unattended even briefly - remember Madeleine McCann? Her parents were 50 meters away from her and she disappeared. Or what if there was a fire at OP's friend's apartment building? Firefighters wouldn't know the infant was there/alone. And I love dogs... but I would not leave even the best-behaved dog alone with a baby.

The thing is, SIDS can happen even if your baby is 5 feet away, one of my friends had the crib next to her (she was breastfeeding) and she woke up because her breasts were hurting and Kerry was gone.

ESH. The child's mother, obviously, but also OP. A***e happens because adults minimize rather than confront it in order not to compromise adult relationships. OP should have absolutely torn the 'mother' a new one and ended the meal then and there AND ALSO called CPS.

You call em out first off ,then you make them get their back sides home to point of taking them yourself ! then you call cps cos if they have done it once you can bet they’ve done it before !!! The minimum age in uk is 15 and a baby is a huge hell no !! Gotta wonder if hubby knew his child was home alone as well 🤔what you do not do is sit there like a spineless idiot to keep the peace cos of a poxy fight ,one thinks a child’s life is far more valuable than a so called mates feelings ffs ,eugh ,I hope the little one was ok ,especially with two large unruly dogs there to ,a crying baby can and does make dogs unsettled and also aggressive at times ,in that 25 mins the baby could have choked , or been ripped to pieces by the dogs !!
