“They’ve Kind Of Lost Touch With Their Workers”: Man Shows A ‘Goodie Bag’ He Received From Burger King To Celebrate 27 Years Of Loyalty

Staying loyal and going the extra mile to help your company flourish eventually has to pay off, right? We expect our efforts to lead to something good, whether it’s a promotion, a pay bump, or at least some sort of genuine appreciation. But while dedicating 27 years of your life to one corporation may seem like a big deal, one Burger King employee recently found out that in fact, the opposite is true.

Kevin Ford, a 54-year-old cook and cashier who hasn’t missed a day of service, recently showed off his work anniversary gifts in a video that went viral for all the wrong reasons. The clip that was shared on TikTok shows Ford standing in the kitchen. He’s going through his goodie bag filled with bland stuff given as a token of appreciation for his nearly three decades of perfect attendance. A movie ticket, a bag of Reese’s Pieces, a Starbucks tumbler, and two packs of Lifesavers — things that amount to virtually nothing.

This whole incident deeply resonated with many people who felt both saddened and enraged about the items Ford received. Many felt let down to witness this modest recognition and believed it simply wasn’t enough. However, Ford himself later expressed gratitude for anything he gets. Read on for how the story goes and let us know what you think of it in the comments!

Later on, Ford expressed his gratitude in an interview while adding that the corporation has “lost touch with their workers”

After going viral for opening up a small bag of gifts he received from HMS Host, the company from which Burger King hires staff, Ford said in an interview with TMZ that he was grateful for the gesture: “I’m happy about anything, I’m thankful for anything I get, I’m not that type of person, believe me. I’ve been through a lot.”

However, the man who works at the Burger King in the Las Vegas airport said it looked like the organization sent him a load of “stuff they had laying around that they put together.” He still called HMS Host a great organization to work for, but he felt a bit let down by their gifts.

“Like most big corporations, they’ve kind of lost touch with their workers, and through Covid and whatever, they started cutting out programs.” Ford has been around the company for a long time to know that before Covid, workers would get checks for their work anniversaries. “We used to get checks for 20 years, and that’s what I actually thought that movie ticket was. I was like ‘hey, they finally gave me my card’, and then I saw it was not even two movie tickets — it was one,” he said, adding that this all seemed like “this is just too much.”

People online truly appreciated and were touched by Ford’s gratitude. The worker is simply happy to have a job and doesn’t want to criticize his employer. “I’m not trying to put them on blast either, I wanna be working there for 28 years,” he mentioned.

Thankfully, someone did step up and try to show the hero of this story some appreciation for his more than a quarter-century of service. His daughter, Seryna, started a GoFundMe fundraiser in a bid to give her father a better gift and help him visit his grandkids in Texas. As she explained in the description, people “shattered the original goal,” and over $40,000 have already been raised in donations.

“The man in that video is my father,” Seryna wrote. “He has worked at his job for 27 years and yes, he has never missed a day of work.” The daughter explained that Ford had to take up this job as a single father when he gained custody of her and her older sister. Ford remarried later on, though he continued to work at HMS Host because of the health insurance.

“[It] got all four of his daughters through high school and college with full healthcare coverage. My dad continues to work here because though he does look young, he is coming up on retirement age and leaving would cost him his retirement,” Seryna continued. “In no way are we asking for money or is he expecting any money but if anyone feels like blessing him, he would love to visit his grandchildren.”

The employee noted in the TMZ interview that he would also like to get a new car — American and hybrid. “But that’s a dream, I’m not aiming for those things. I’m just aiming to get through the next day.” Moreover, the man revealed he would love to have a day off to visit his friends, have some fun and relax. Although he quickly added, “I can’t even think about a day off, I haven’t had a day off in so long.” Luckily for him, it seems that sometimes dreams do become reality.

Ford got emotional while talking about this whole experience: “All the love that people are giving me is just so, so overwhelming, I just wanna thank everyone so so much.” The employee added all he wants is to go to work, have fun, and make everybody’s life better, “like they’re doing to me.”

A spokesperson for Burger King told TMZ, “The Burger King brand and its many franchisees nationwide are committed to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of the thousands of people serving across a wide range of roles — all dedicated to providing our Guests a world-class experience.”

“Following review with this location’s franchisee, we’ve learned that this video depicts a Team Member in receipt of a peer-to-peer reward in recognition of a short-term positive performance/experience,” they continued. “The franchisee offers its Team Members a robust employee recognition program, which includes the recognition of tenure milestones and monetary awards.”

This is why I do not give my all to my job. My husband on the other hand does. (we work at the same place in the same department) He busts his a** hustling everyday to get things done. Do they notice, No. He made the company $1 million in sales last year. Nothing. I do NOT do more than what I was hired for and will not because they will not notice nor will they care.

same, and it's not even about being mediocre or something, it's about being fair. There's really no reason to do more than what you're paid for. No one works out of loyalty to the team or for fun, we're all there to pay our debts, nothing else.

THIS is the reason why universal healthcare will NEVER pass in the U.S. Corporations rely on people working for nothing under bad or horrific conditions just to be covered by company healthcare.

Yep. That's capitalism for you. It relies on coercion and oppression to function. And what's more coercive than threatening to take away a worker's healthcare if they don't fall in line? To me... that's violence. Threatening workers with death due to lack of coverage if the workers don't do what the capitalists want. Always making sure there is a large supply of unemployed workers on hand (real unemployment rate is much higher than advertized unemployment rate due to arbitrary restrictions in the fed's definition of "unemployed") so that current workers are constantly worried about being replaced and losing health insurance. If they don't give up their entire life for work, their are plenty of other desperate people who will gladly do so. This is also why homelessness is an issue in the US. We could solve homelessness at any time (we have more empty homes than homeless people) but we choose not to. Because homelessness is used as a threat to keep the lower level workers in line.

My org used to give jackets every 5 years. The jacket selection was upgraded the longer your employment but even the 5 year jackets were great and high quality. Our org was taken over by a big university between my 5th and 10th. I got a nice London Fog jacket for my 5th and a pen for my 10th.

My uncle, 30 years in management at a national phone company, returned from a vacation to find he'd been 'retired' in his absence. Don't let the door hit your butt on your way out, fella. My partner, 24 years a software engineer with a major insurance firm recently bought by a German player, was shown the door without benefits for refusing to relocate from California to India. Do employee-owned firms treat exiting people better?

My father worked for NC Machinery for 36 years. In the last five years with the company, he took so much c**p from them because he was afraid they were trying to find a way to force him into retirement. He wanted his full pension and was willing to work himself in the ground to get it. When his retirement party came around, I drove me and my sister to the event. We were rudely cut off by a car that was driven by my father's boss. When I pointed it out to him, his wife was embarrassed but he seemed uninterested. My fathers parting gift..a bottle of Crown Royal. My father hadn't touched booze in 30 years. I still have the unopened bottle after my dad passed 15 years later.

Why isn't he at the very least a manager? Or shift leader? Is he on the spectrum and just not cut out for it? Did he never ask? Why isn't he running his own franchise? Someone isn't telling the whole story here. REGARDLESS, this man should be given stock options after twenty years, period. You think janky healthcare is enough when 90% of the 1st western free world gets basic healthcare covered for nothing? That goofy toddler birthday party gift bag is a SLAP in the face and he's not UNGRATEFUL for it! SHOULD buy him a decent watch. Man had made your disgusting corp a couple million, EASY. If some incredible restauranteur like Guy Fieri doesn't snap him up to help run one of his operations I'd be surprised. I KNOW that as long as people are happy, secure, them they stay. Some can't see advancement, it's on him, sure but something doesn't smell right. The joy, the gratitude, the humility this man posseses and dedication few will ever have. It would be an honor to hire this man elsewhere.

I'm no huge fan of BK but a Whopper every now and then is good. That's how I like my burgers most the time anyway (but I cook better everything). To have this man make a sandwich for me would be a lifetime honor for the best fast food burger I've ever had just knowing his dedication and how much he cares, clearly he's passionate about his job I think. I wish I had money to open my own restaurants and food trucks because I love to cook. I'd give a MINT of money to have this man on my side and give him every opportunity to excel and have no less than four week paid vacation every single year. Fast food and restaurants often operate on tight profit margins and this terrible Globalist destroyed economy only makes it's worse but this man is the sort that brings in tons of customers with care and dedication. You can tell. I love his story. GLAD that his GoFundMe his daughter started got him the ability to see his babies... Now everyone keep going and help him BUY HIS OWN STORE!!!

I will work harder if, and only if, I get a raise- not a bonus. I will not work more with just the promise of a raise, because people can twist their words. And if I don’t get a raise for long enough, there are always other companies that are hiring.
