I was homeless for a few years, 2011-2014 , California, age 60. No help from the county Social Services because I was an "Able-Bodied Adult Male". A good friend let me camp (in a tiny trailer I owned) on his commercial property, he had a porta-potty on site I was allowed to use, and I plugged into his electricity for light and for heat during the cold/snowy winter. No running water except for a garden hose during the summer. I was enrolled at the local junior college so I got a student discount rate at our local fitness center and that's where I showered, a couple times a week. Finally got into Veteran's Homeless program in Reno, NV, 2014, found employment, worked until Social Security retirement at age 63. Yeah, I had it relatively posh compared to many if not most homeless, but being homeless is depressing beyond words and extremely difficult to climb your way out of in America.

The next time someone hits you with "straight Pride month" or "All lives matter", imagine firefighters doing all they can to extinguish a house completely on fire, while some angry moron is shouting at them "What about MY house? Does it not matter? I demand you solve my house's problems RIGHT NOW!" while all they have is a leaky water tap in their kitchen

I e er had a job that paid $20 an hour. The closest I came to it was almost $18 an hour. QhenI retired I was making a little more than $15 an hour. I would have loved a job making g $20 an hour. There are many people out there that makes less then $20 an hour. So don't complain.

And corporations are making record profits, while selling cráppier products and not paying their workers a living wage. It's all about filling the pockets of the C-suite and the shareholders.

Same. The studio I rented when I was a cook at 21 was $400 a month. It now goes for $1600+. I make 3x what I did and I cannot afford to live without a roommate. I have worked in several fields and though the rate of pay has more than tripled the value of the dollar has fallen significantly more than that.

Money needs to move to create wealth. The same thousands of dollars that a billionaire can afford to "park" in whatever accounts channelled into a minimum wage raise will funnel the money back into the economy pretty much immediately, where the grocery store, the gas station, maybe the landlord, maybe the local cinema, ice rink, bowling alley, restaurants, jeweller or wine shop will benefit from it. More transactions mean the shops will need more goods and more employees, who will circle their wages back, too. In contrast the number of people those $$$ will help when given to a billionaire is very small - and unless you own a yacht manufacturing company, a golf course, or a private bank it's unlikely to include you.

I have a brother who is a retired veteran who is homeless because he can't find affordable rent. Hopefully he will soon since getting his full retirement pay. But doubtful he could pay for food and car expenses on top of that.

There are definitely lazy people out there. It may be a term that's applied wrong in many, even most cases, but not all. There will always be people who want things they didn't earn. That's why we have billionaires.

Instead of moaning about people drinking lattes or eating the occasional avocado toast, how about directing your ire at the people who profiteer off necessities.

This is why I purposely avoided buying a Samsung TV. Though a firmware update on my Sony TV added a feature which if I switched on, would track my viewing habits (it was very upfront about that). It has stayed off.

My grandmother was a waitress and my grandfather was a butcher. They had 2 kids and paid off their house when I was very young. This sounds like something out of a fairytale now in today's economy.

Their first was a 6-room house for $27,000 in 1967, when my dad was 27 and my mom was 25. Both times, they had one salary. I bought a 5-room house for $99,000 in 1997. I was 32, and only managed it due to a brief buyer's market, a house facing a second winter on the market, and a year of 12-16 hour work days, 6 days a week. My daughter, who's 36, will never be able to afford a house. She lives with me and we're cooperating on a remodel to update everything. She'll inherit a paid off house that's modernized. Oh, and my parents left an underwater mortgage of over $200,000 when they died.

Pay them 10. Then give a small portion to someone who is not able to help. It will make them feel good, and chances are, because they feel better, they will contribute in a way which is possible for them the next time. There. Fixed it for you.
