There is a thin line between healthy pride and arrogance. The former focuses on growth and the satisfaction of working hard to achieve a goal, while the latter is about comparing yourself to others to prove you are better than them.

Arrogance is never welcome in any social setting, but healthy pride, when done right, can inspire others. This is what happened in a recent Threads post when one user encouraged people to share their biggest flexes.

Some shared beating serious illnesses, while others revealed major accomplishments to prove anything is possible. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself smiling or feeling a jolt of motivation as you read through.

She is a smart, talented, beautiful woman. I don't like that we distinguish "first black woman" yes, it's a milestone. Be proud. But it's like saying she overcame the color of her skin to achieve this. Maybe I'm wrong. Kudos to her. I think you guys know what I mean, not in a bad way at all. Let’s further break down the differences between healthy pride and arrogance, this time with some expert insights. According to retired clinical psychologist Dr. Leon Seltzer, one crucial contrast is that the former is about self-confidence that reflects an “intrinsically motivating ‘can-do’ attitude.

Meanwhile, the latter requires proving oneself, which fuels the drive for success.

If you read through the stories on this list, you will notice the air of humility in the people who posted them. According to Dr. Seltzer, healthy pride is often expressed assertively yet conveyed implicitly.

In contrast, unhealthy pride is an aggressive declaration of personal superiority that takes the form of looking down on others.

We can also call healthy pride authentic pride, which neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis defines as a quiet satisfaction from a job well done, typically when we’re practicing a craft.

In these moments, authentic pride may also fuel a desire for continuous learning and a willingness to seek criticism to improve.
