To me, this highlights the idea of gender roles, which have not developed the same way in every place. Societies have created expectations for women’s work, fertility, marriage, and home life based on their economic and social needs. These assumptions often lasted for generations, even after the original reasons for them had changed.

These passed-down standards affected more than just jobs. They also shaped beliefs about marriage, fertility, and what men and women should do at home. Families pass gender norms from parents to children, which helps explain why common ideas about motherhood, fatherhood, and housework can last even as society changes.

In two-parent families with children, mothers still seem to spend more time on childcare and chores, while fathers spend more time working for pay. But when researchers added up paid and unpaid work, mothers and fathers had almost the same total workload.

The shift shows that traditional parenting roles have changed, but they have not disappeared completely. Even as fathers take on more childcare, mothers still tend to carry more of the work.

Studies in nine Western industrialized countries found that women are doing less housework, while men are doing more. Researchers looking at European countries found that welfare policies and childcare systems also shape how families divide care and housework. So, two families with similar incomes and children might have different expectations based on their country, its policies, and local attitudes about work and caregiving.

Even when parents share parenting, they don’t always feel the workload is equal. Moms often think parenting is tiring and stressful, while dads are more likely to feel judged by their partners about their parenting.

These differences come into play especially when couples decide who takes care of daily tasks. One parent might see doing a task now and then as helping, while the other sees it as just one part of a bigger routine of caring for the child.

Couples not only split up chores, but also have opinions about whether the split feels fair. In a study of 33 married and cohabiting couples, researchers found that partners usually agreed on who did which household tasks. Husbands tended to do more outdoor and car-related work, while wives took on more childcare.

The same study found that couples who saw their division of chores in a similar way felt more certain about their relationship, though this was less connected to how satisfied they were overall. This means that disagreements about chores can matter for reasons beyond the tasks themselves, since partners notice whether their efforts match what they expect.

People may judge the same parenting behavior differently depending on whether a mother or father does it. In one experiment, researchers asked people to rate parents who either succeeded or failed at a parenting task. While overall ratings for mothers and fathers were similar, more objective measures tended to favor mothers.

The researchers connected this difference to gender stereotypes about parenting. When a mother did poorly, her rating fell more sharply, but fathers did not see the same drop. This suggests that people judge parents by different standards, which may explain why a short public parenting moment can lead to strong reactions from others.

So, maybe the dad just missed a chance to help, or maybe those few seconds on camera showed a bigger issue. Either way, we can only guess, since no one watching knows what happened before the cameras started rolling.
