My name is Dora Hathazi Mendes, one of my passion is to create Cat Art to tribute these gorgeous animals.
One of the classic Halloween element is the Black Cat, which symbolise bad luck, evil, spookiness, and association of witchcraft. But for millions of Black Cat Owners, Halloween is an excellent opportunity to celebrate their “spooky” pets, and for others also inevitable to remember their beloved companions.
Rebeka, our Black Cat was ruling our life during 16 years, and during the time she spent with us, she supplied me with plenty of joy and inspiration for colourful cat paintings in general. I created several paintings about cats of different patterns and colours, probably because of having a black cat I was missing the amazing diversity of these sophisticated animals. Interestingly, only when she passed away I started to paint portraits of black cats, in hindsight I believe was a way of dealing with my loss, and also for making her memory to stay eternal.
With my paintings I found my own way to memorialise my furry companion, and now sharing my Artwork to the World make me feel grateful, that I had such a great animal friend for years.

Insomnia – Cat And Owl. Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes, and Rebeka the Black Cat who was our companion during 16 years.
Insomnia, Cat Art by Dora Hathazi Mendes. These two creatures are both motionless, waiting for something to move, something little noise to listen, or a slight movement to react to in a split of a second. The Own is free, the Black Cat is inside the home looking out from behind a window, but her instincts don’t make her behave differently. After the seemingly silent night, the dawn finally arrived, the first rays of the sun paint the air with warm tones, but they still not give it up. They are both excellent hunters, predators with highly developed senses of hearing and smell, and excellent eyesight adopted to night low light conditions. The two animals on my painting are surrounded by decorative elements such as gold organic motifs and mosaic arrangements, creating a dreamlike, seemingly calm and peaceful scene.
