I created these heads to pay tribute to my loved ones who suffer from some of these conditions. My husband has suffered from depression all his life, his brother has both anxiety and depression and my father had frontal lobe dementia.

After living with these illnesses I felt it was important to recreate them so it would show the impact of the illness on the person suffering with it. I myself have a well mind and as such I felt I could give a fresh and honest perspective on each condition.

Each head shows the external and inner turmoil that the sufferer goes through every day. They are heartbreaking to look at, yet compelling.

The heads took 10 months to create and were a unique canvas for my oil paints. Each head was moulded on my own face and I created them from pulp and plaster of Paris over a wire frame. Once painted I then created the wooden bases to further represent the conditions. Every element of each head has been thought out with the relevant illness in mind. It took 2 months just to create the head alone.

Remember in life you are never alone with your illness, there are those who share their lives with you that care for you and hold you dearly in their hearts. And for those who do not suffer always remember it’s nothing personal when the person you care about has an episode. The amount of mental energy they use to keep going is far more than a well minded person has to use, so give them a break.

I hope these heads are a reminder that we see you and still love you. A greater sense of understanding and compassion is what the world needs.
