Four bananas deep, half the size of a giraffe and the weight of three apples... While the rest of us get by just fine using the good, old metric system, our friends in America are always daring to be different.
The International System of Units (SI) is a base-10 decimal system used by almost the entire planet. Think meters, centimeters, kilometers or grams. The US customary or imperial system, on the other hand, prefers to count in inches, feet, yards, miles, stones or sometimes even tomatoes. To 'simplify' matters, Americans have devised this clever trick: To remember how many feet there are in a mile, think of “five tomatoes” because it sounds like “five two eight oh.” Wait, what?
There's an entire online community dedicated to shining a light on the United States' strange way of measuring things. Anything But Metric is a laugh a minute, or a pint... or a potato. The posts prove that Americans will do anything to avoid using a system that's worked just fine for pretty much everyone else. Here are some perfect examples.

The USA didn't invent the Imperial measurements. We've just kept them while others changed.

The New River Gorge Bridge Is Obviously One Monument And Two Statues Tall
Liberty is 151 feet (46 meters) without the base. Washington Monument is 555 feet (169 meters). New River Gorge bridge is 876 feet (267 meters). So, we'd need to add 30 to 34 bananas for this to be accurate.

While I find US customary units and imperial units very confusing, especially when it comes to baking and cooking (I'm sorry, what the heck do you mean by 4 pints of cherry tomatoes? 2 sticks of butter? 1 cup of onion... ? 8 ounces of feta... ? My tomato paste and cheese don't come in cups either) - it's always easy to just shut up and convert the units either in your head or use the resources available you to do it. I appreciate the authors that take their time and use both measurements for their audience. (But I'll still laugh at bananas, corgis and football fields for scale. In a good way, I promise. )
